Mike and John We will be releasing a free minor upgrade soon (hopefully this side of Christmas) that will include, amongst many other things, an option in Preferences to always save your data in a form of Unicode (called UTF-8) that most programs support - including Gensmarts. That should solve a number of problems with companion products that don't support UTF-16. You can already export your data in UTF-8 using the Export command on the File menu (click File, Import/Export , Export, GEDCOM File) but obviously it's easier if you don't have to do that.
