My first reaction is that you are not using the FH Project structure, which means that many FH features are disabled. See http://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=how_to:v4:understanding_projects A major benefit of using the Project structure and Media sub-folder is that Media links don't get broken when migrating from computer to computer! See http://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=how_to:family_historian_migration_guide So I would suggest the following folder structure: Genealogy\FH ... set this as the FH File > Project Window > Location: instead of My Documents\Family Historian Projects Genealogy\FH\Morris ... holds the Morris.fh_proj file (renamed from Family Historian Sample Project) Genealogy\FH\Morris\Morris.fh_data ... holds the Morris.ged file Genealogy\FH\Morris\Morris.fh_data\Media ... holds your Media files That path is shorter than yours so no filename truncation should be involved. Genealogy\Family Trees\Morris Family Media If you stick with your current folder structure: To correct the External File Links path, simply select the deepest 'Morris Family Media' folder, then use 'Re-Map > Re-map to Other Location' and browse to the 'Family Trees' folder, then click OK. In other scenarios you may need to select all the folders beneath the 'Morris Family Media' folder, then use 'Re-Map'. If you switch to my proposed folder structure, select all the folders beneath the 'Morris Family Media' folder, then use 'Re-Map > Re-map within Project Data Folder' and select the Media folder. There are videos of the above techniques in the FHUG Knowledge Base. http://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=how_to:changing_external_file_links Regards, Mike Tate -----Original Message----- Subject: [FHU] Media Linking On New Computer I have the old problem of linking my media on a new computer. Old computer is a PC, new computer is a Mac running ‘Parallels’. All is running fine and using the latest version of FH 6. I cannot manage to link the media using the External File Links dialog box. I do not wish to have the media in the FH Projects - Media folder as the file path is too long for some of my media and will require truncating the file names. I have the Gedcom file under a folder on the Mac’s hard drive, a folder called Genealogy > Family Trees > Morris Family Gedcom. The media folder is under the same location - Genealogy > Family Trees > Morris Family Media. When I remap with External File Links the path has double headings in the path name, E.g. - Genealogy > Family Trees > Morris Family Media > Morris family Media. If I try to highlight and select all the media in the folder a dialog box says, “Multiple selection is valid, but all the selected items must belong to the same folder! , what does this mean? Any assistance is most welcome, could the links issue be because the FH program is running under Parallels (Windows) and the Media is stored on the hard drive of the Mac?
