Hi Brian, this is a recurring question. One option you might like to consider is to forget about Record Id and use Custom Id instead. You have complete editorial control over Custom Id so you can always manually synchronise across Projects. With a little customisation [Custom Id] can replace [Record Id] in virtually every screen display, Diagram, Report, etc. 1) Yes, "Tools > Record Identifiers" offers solutions, and Citations are automatically synchronised. 2) There is no way to define the new Record Id, but again "Tools > Record Identifiers" offers solutions. 3) Use "File > Import/Export > Export > GEDCOM File" and Exclude all except "Source records". The resulting GEDCOM can be used to initialise the New Project, or used with "File > Merge/Compare File" and then "Tools > Record Identifiers" as above. For further details about these options see the FHUG Knowledge Base: http://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=glossary:record_types_and_record_id http://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=glossary:work_with_record_identifiers Beware that in the unlikely event of having Source Record Id in saved FH Charts, then the above Record Id changes will corrupt the Chart. Regards, Mike Tate -----Original Message----- Subject: [FHU] Source Record Numbers Can someone help please. For various historical reasons, I've got 2 major gedcom files which I've worked on at different times and, over the years, I've added different sources to each of the files and now they are out of sync. I would like to tidy up the numbering by re-numbering the sources in one file to be the same as those in the larger one. I appreciate there may be an occasion clash of numbers but I can work through those few instances. I've exported a list of sources in both files so I will have a comparison list of changes I'll want to make. I have some questions I'd like help with:- 1) Is there a simple way to re-number a source ID and any record citations that use that source (other than using find-and-replace in a text editor in the basic GEDCOM file) 2) If I add a new source, is there a way of defining the source number (the default seems to be the next number after the current top source number) 3) If in the future I start a new project, what is the best way to pre-load it with all my "usual" sources Many thanks Brian
Brian, one thing I forgot to mention regarding 3) when exporting Source records. You must NOT Exclude any Repository records nor Multimedia Records that may be linked to the Source records. Also untick Unconnected Records and do NOT select any Individual Records. After creating the New Project, any unlinked Multimedia must be deleted. Mike Thanks for the prompt reply. I used the Tools - Work with Record Identifiers and first copied my old numbers into the custom ID, changed the ones I wanted and then copied them back. However, at first it did not seem to work - I got it working eventually by manually adding a Custom ID field to a couple and then the "Tools" routine created Custom IDs on all the others (which initially did not have them.) I've no immediate need to start a new project but I'll try to remember your advice when I do. Brian, did you follow all the advice in: http://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=glossary:work_with_record_identifiers especially regarding the "Find Duplicate Custom ID's" Plugin to ensure all your new Custom Id are unique. You could also use the Records Window > Sources tab with a Custom Id column and sort on that column to check for missing or duplicate values. If inadvertently any of your edited Custom Id duplicate another Custom Id, or the Custom Id field is blank, then "Work with Record Identifiers" will be unreliable. I suggest you experiment with the "File > Import/Export > Export > GEDCOM File" technique and create a New Project. Did you see my follow up corrections? The process is quite quick and that new Project can be easily deleted via "File > Project Window > More Tasks". Make a note of the procedure for future reference.
