Dave, yes CENS is better supported than a custom EVENt TYPE although they are quite well supported. Use the "Change Any Fact Tag" Plugin to quickly perform the conversion. The major plus that I can see is that when exporting to another system, CENS is a standard GEDCOM tag and would provide less problems that using a custom tag.
