    1. [FHU] Implementing FH v6 in a VM environment
    2. Gayle Bosworth via
    3. I am making the move to a MacAir computer and I've running my PC solely to use Family Historian for about 2 years. I want to load FH in a VM environment on my Mac. I have my original CD for Version 4 and I'm sure I have the license key for v5 and v6. How dot he experts recommend I create my new environment. Start from the ground up or copy my exisiting system across to the VM? PS I'm not a technical person but my hubby is. Thanks for your help Sent from my iPad

    3. Gayle, Please register for free on the FHUG website: http://www.fhug.org.uk/ There is a wealth of information about how to install FH on a Mac using a VM. http://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=how_to:family_historian_on_imac_ipad_android_etc Oracle VirtualBox is free, but you must purchase a retail Windows 10 licence. (The OEM Windows licence on your PC won't work.) Crossover is also free, and needs NO Windows licence, but is more challenging to use. There is a Family Historian Migration Guide to move everything from PC to PC (Mac VM): http://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=how_to:family_historian_migration_guide You only need the FH V6 installation media (CD or download) and licence details for V5 and V6. You do NOT need the FH V4 nor FH V5 installation media. It is all explained in the FHUG Knowledge Base and if anything is not clear just ask in the Forums. Did you know the FHUG offers lots of free downloads? e.g. Do you use Ancestral Sources for data capture? 3. Gayle, As Mike Tate has already advised, the FHUG may be the best way for you to gather information on running Family Historian on a Mac. Several Mac Users are on the Forum, including myself, and can offer opinions and help with the various options. Basically there are two approaches if you want to use both Mac and Windows software in tandem: a) a full Windows environment using one of the virtualisation software products, Parallels, VMWare or VirtualBox (all require a Windows licence, as Mike mentioned): VirtualBox is free to use; Parallels and VMWare are commercial products; or b) using a Windows replication environment called 'WINE' (stands for Wine Is Not an Emulator) to enable you to install 'some' Windows software on Macs and Linux computers without a Windows licence. This option has worked reasonably well for running Family Historian in the past; and recent updates to WINE seem to have delivered further improvements. This option is normally easier when using one of the available 'front-ends' to the WINE program, i.e. Crossover (the Commercial option), or Wineskin, Winebottler, or Play on Mac (3 Free to Use Options).
