    1. [FHU] Moving FH6 to a new PC
    2. John Bradburn via
    3. Mike, I am very happy to say that I now have a fully functioning FH6 on my new PC after reading and understanding your latest advice. In fact I put the "Family Historian" file from the plugin into the "FH Backups" file on the old PC and transferred it to and restored it from the same file on the new PC. I am now going to move the "Family Historian Projects" and "FH Backups" files from the C drive to the I drive on the new PC in order to take advantage of the Raid 1 which the I drive has. Thanks again for all your help and I can now get on with genealogy. Regards, John. ------------------------------ Message: 2 Date: Sun, 13 Dec 2015 15:38:46 -0000 From: "Beryl & Mike Tate" <post@tatewise.co.uk> Subject: [FHU] Moving FH6 to a new PC To: <family-historian-users@rootsweb.com> Message-ID: <001201d135bc$5af73810$10e5a830$@co.uk> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" No John, you are still choosing the wrong folder for the Plugin backups. Let me try and clarify. Let us say the folder you choose to use for backups (both FH and Backup & Restore Plugin) is "C:\Users\John\Documents\FH Backups" on both PC. Then FH will store its ZIP files there, and the Plugin will create its "Family Historian" folder there to hold its FH Settings Backups. Within that "C:\Users\John\Documents\FH Backups\Family Historian" folder will be for the currently installed FH: "Plugin Data", "Program Data", and " Tutorial Files" folders, and "ImageList.txt", "Registry.keys", "Version.data", and possibly some image files. So when you use the Plugin its Backup/Restore folder is "C:\Users\John\Documents\FH Backups" on both PC and that is what should be chosen on its tabs. The explanation for why there is an extra layer of folders for the Plugin is that more than one version of FH can be installed. e.g. The free FH Demo V3.0 could also be installed and the Plugin would backup to "C:\Users\John\Documents\FH Backups\Family Historian Demo 3.0". During Beta testing a new FH could also be installed and Plugin would backup to "C:\Users\John\Documents\FH Backups\Family Historian 6.0 Beta". Each of those folders hold the same subfolder and file names as listed above. BUT the Plugin root backup folder is "C:\Users\John\ Documents\FH Backups" and that is what should chosen on its Options tab. However, to simplify migration and synchronisation between PC it is better to put the backup folder within the "C:\Users\John\Documents\Family Historian Projects" folder so there is only one folder to migrate/synch both backups and projects. I hope that makes sense, Mike Tate -----Original Message----- Subject: Re: [FHU] FAMILY-HISTORIAN-USERS Digest, Vol 10, Issue 275 Mike, I did set the Default Backup Folder on the new PC, but I set it to the ongoing location of C:\Users\John\ Documents\FH Backups! (As it was on the old PC) I think you are telling me that I should first, for the purpose of this data transfer, have set the default backup folder as the folder where the Plugin had stored the data I am trying to restore - ie C:\Users\John\Documents\Family Historian Projects\Family Historian. Once I have got everything going in this configuration. I am going to move the Family Historian Projects file and the FH Backups file from the C drive to the I drive, as the I drive has Raid 1 on it and is much bigger. >From your comments on Using Non-default Locations, I think that this >should work OK. Unless I hear from you to the contrary, I will try again with the different backup setting and report back. Thanks for the usual speedy help. So now on new PC the RESTORE needs the equivalent "C:\Users\John\Documents\Family Historian Projects" folder. This can be selected on the Options tab with the Choose Backup Folder button as explained in the Help & Advice. Usually by default this Plugin uses the Family Historian Backup folder set in Tools > Preferences > Backup. The FH Migration Guide advises that you set that Preference on the new PC before using this Plugin. For my understanding, did you do that? Regards, Mike Tate -----Original Message----- Subject: [FHU] Moving FH6 to a new PC I have followed the advice in using the plugin: Backup and Restore Family Historian Settings in order to make sure that everything in my FH6 is moved from my old to my new PC. In particular I have carefully followed the steps in the Family Historian V5 & V6 Migration Guide but when I attempt the final step of restoring the settings to my new PC I get the error message, "Backup Data Missing Error: Backup Data folder has no Family Historian backup data saved" On my new PC the data from the plugin is in "C:>Users>John>Documents>Family Historian Projects>Family Historian" which is the path I put into the Restore tab. Inside this folder are: folders "Plugin Data", "Program Data", " Tutorial Files", "Image List" and files "Registry Keys", "Version.data" All of these Folders and files appear to be populated except the first one, "Plugin Data" which is empty. There appears to be no way of modifying the Backup Data path under the Restore tab once I have filled it in by browsing for the file although this may not be a solution to the problem. I do not have any linked data or any media in my project at this time, but what I am particularly keen to migrate are a) a Custom Query which I use all the time and b) the Record Flags against those people associated with this query. Could someone please suggest what the problem may be and how to overcome it.
