Paul I dispensed with Vista long ago for Windows 7. I have read that Windows 8 will be available soon so best wait for that. Look forward to FH 5 Victor Sent from my BlackBerry® wireless device -----Original Message----- From: "Paul Mutum" <paulmutum@btinternet.com> Sender: family-historian-users-bounces@rootsweb.com Date: Fri, 11 Nov 2011 17:47:41 To: <family-historian-users@rootsweb.com> Reply-To: family-historian-users@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [FHU] Long-time user query Bob, I think I would buy the latest version if you can - save yourself a day! Presumably this new version will work on Windows & - having seen the problems my wife had with Vista - or rather I had as I sort her computer out for her usually I have stayed with XP but I think I may upgrade soon. I started with FH 2.1 and since then have upgraded each time a new version is released. Over the same time period I've also upgraded my PC several times (and also had to perform the occasional rebuild). If I remember rightly, each time I've had to start by installing FH 2.1 and then perform the various upgrades to each major version from saved downloads. Can anyone tell me if there's an easier way that I'm missing? This is no urgent query as I'm not intending to get a new PC for at least another 12 months, but I can see a position in a few years time when we're up to FH 7.0 or so when it's going to take a day and a half to reinstall the software! Victor: it will be a long wait before the retail version of Windows 8 is released. Perhaps 18 months. There will be releases of Beta code long before that, it will be your decision whether to try Beta code that will be buggy. I'd not suggest anyone did this unless they had a second PC. Meanwhile, Windows 7 in both its 32 & 64 bit versions runs FH magnificently. By comparison, XP is a poor operating system - especially for PC newcomers. Ian
