A few extra ideas. If FH says in "File > File Statistics" or as suggested by Alan in "File > Gedcom File Tasks > Save a Gedcom File Copy" it is using drive C then it must be using drive C. Double check the drive letter used by both FH and FTW. Try making a change in FH and saving it, then check Date Modified on the FTW GEDCOM.ged file to prove that is the one FH is using. You can open any .ged file using a plain text editor such as Start > Programs > Accessories > Notepad and examine its contents to see what data it contains. Beware not to use Save though! When using Windows Explorer does it display hidden files and file extensions such as .doc or .ged or .txt? It is useful when tracking down files to do so. On Windows 7 open Windows Explorer and use Tools > Folder options > View tab. Then select 'Show hidden files, folders, and drives' and untick 'Hide extensions for known file types'. There are similar options on Windows Vista and XP. When you double-click the FTW GEDCOM.ged it opens in FTW rather than FH because FTW is the default program for .ged extensions. You can change that default by right-click on any .ged file and choose 'Open with' and then 'Choose default program'. If FH is listed then select it or Browse to its Programs Files executable, ensure 'Always use the selected program to open this kind of file' is ticked. The only thing I can think is that my hard drive is partitioned into C and D. I use C but the size of the mainly zipped data in D leads me to think that FH is hiding its GEDCOM file in D. I still don't understand why File Statistics is wrong, and why or how FH is hiding stuff in D, if that's what is happening. (I can't actually find it in D, anyway)! I want to link two chosen relatives on a diagram with a coloured line, something FH doesn’t do but would be very useful. So I load my FH GEDCOM file (called Hawkins1) into FTM and get my coloured line. I noticed this but didn’t think it mattered. And it didn’t, at first. The point of this rather lengthy description is this: FH works perfectly, but when I uploaded the FTW GEDCOM FILE to ancestry.co.uk I realised it’s out of date, lacking the latest additions (I haven’t used FTM for a while). FH evidently isn’t using it. So where is my FH GEDCOM file? The FH program finds it every time, but where has it gone? Windows Explorer can’t find it. Is there any way I can get FH to tell me where it’s saving it? As a small contribution to this, I believe FTM saves its files with the extension .ftw. Indeed, they offer a facility to "convert" gedcom files into FTW format, though I suspect that very little is done apart from changing the extension. So, Does Dennis' file show up in FH with a .ged extension or with .ftw? There may be two files with the same name but different extensions that have got out of sync. Thank you everyone for your valuable advice, particularly Mike Tate, because simply changing the default file-opening-program to FH has miraculously cured the problem (fingers crossed). No, I don't understand it!
