Hello victor thanks for your reply. I am reasonably conversant with how databases work but this one has got me beat. My sister and I each have a copy of FH Version 4 running on two computers in her case and a laptop in my case. we each have separate gedcom files for our family histories on separate memory sticks. my sister who is less experienced wanted me to show her how to use Ancestral Sources. I created all the census flags in FH and AS and prepared a census entry in AS. I saved the file and at the same time ran census flag check in AS. so I cannot be sure exactly when the error occurred either on the census update or the flag check When I returned to FH there was a strange error message which I did not unfortunately record however it said something like a file had stopped working but the family history data did show up. A mysterious thing is that all the image files were lost in FH not just showing the images with a cross but no images at all. I restored the gedcom file from a backup and fortunately the image files were there but crossed out so it was relatively easy to restore the external file links. I then tried to investigate where the problem lay and discovered that when I tried to add a flag manually i.e by right clicking the record and then set flag I found that only the 1851, 1871 and 1911 census fags were available. I then checked the diagram tools options boxes and found that all the flags were still there. AS had however updated the data from the census as a census source into the property box but without the flag I deleted these flags and recreated them, but still trying to add them manually resulted in the same thing ie only the 51, 71, and 1911 flags were available to be set manually. this lead me to rule out AS as the cause of the problem. I then loaded my gedcom file on to my sisters laptop and found that everything was working fine with all my flags showing and, replacing my sister's gedcom file showed the same error with the flags. the gedcom file itself cannot be corrupted as it doesnt contain any flag data so it seems and FH is not able to read the flags properly or to make any changes to them, Robacis -----Original Message----- From: Victor Markham Sent: Wednesday, November 23, 2011 4:07 PM To: family-historian-users@rootsweb.com Cc: robacis@btinternet.com Subject: Re: [FHU] Flags Crashes this way do tend to happen when you are saving Ancestral Sources and try to open FH at the same time. Have you inspected the \Calico Pie\Family Historian\Flags\Flags.fha file? Its location depends on Windows operating system. XP is at C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\ Vista & 7 at C:\ProgramData\ (BTW this is an important folder to backup regularly.) The Flags.fha file is plain text and should look like: [.index] Count=4 [Flag1] Name=Living Tag=__LIVING [Flag2] Name=Private Tag=__PRIVATE [Flag3] Name=Marriage 1 Tag=__MARRIAGE_1 [Flag4] Name=Marriage 2 Tag=__MARRIAGE_2 -----Original Message----- From: family-historian-users-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:family-historian-users-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of robacis@btinternet.com Sent: 25 November 2011 18:00 To: family-historian-users@rootsweb.com Cc: info@calico-pie.com Subject: Re: [FHU] Flags Hello victor thanks for your reply. This thread has prompted me to check my system since it is a while since I created any new flags. The question is where are they all, as I have now forgotten? The Flags.fha file in the folder under ProgramData (Win7) only has three defined: Living, Private and Not Married. Where are all the others, census, BMD etc that show in the list when I want to add one to an individual?
