Anne, On the spouse tab you can set the 'Status' of the couple to 'unmarried couple' or 'never married'. This will produce a sentence in the narrative: 'at some point he and xxx were an unmarried couple' or 'at some point he had a relationship with...' (choose whichever you feel seems more appropriate).
