    3. Hi Karen and Stuart, Thank you very much for your responses. Karen, I had already tried to unlink us all from the second marriage as you suggest but all it does is to completely disassociate the three of us from our step mother. Stuart, I tried your suggestion Try this... Go to your own record and in the properties box and select the 'All' tab. Look for the two Parents family rows and swap them by using the Up/Down arrows in the top right of the properties tab. It has done the job perfectly. Many Thanks. This will produce a sentence in the narrative: 'at some point he and xxx were an unmarried couple' or 'at some point he had a relationship with...' (choose whichever you feel seems more appropriate). However, where you have a couple but no 'Fact' linking them (e.g. no marriage), FH will automatically generate an extra sentence to indicate the nature of the couple's relationship, based on the value of the 'Status' field, for their relationship. The reason we do this is that otherwise you could get a report for a person, which mentions their spouse or partner without giving any indication as to why the spouse or partner is being mentioned - and that could be confusing. However, you can switch these extra 'auto-generated' sentences off if you don't want them. To do that, untick "Auto-Generate Sentences if Missing Facts" in the Main tab of Options for the narrative report in question. To learn more about these 'extra sentences', click on the Help button within the Options dialog. It looks as though it is going to be a very useful tool in my family research. Despite not being the most computer literate of people it seems quite straightforward and I have found the guide very helpful. However I have come across a problem which I cant seem to resolve and I hope someone here can help. The problem lies with the 'ancestors' tab of my own focus page. When I go to view this screen my parents are shown as my father and my step mother. I would prefer it to show my natural mother. My father married twice and my brothers and I are from his first marriage. On the first section of my fathers focus page I have showed us as the birth children of his first marriage. I have also linked us all to his second marriage showing us as birth children to father and step children to his wife. So we are all linked to both family groups. Is the only way to rectify this to unlink all 3 of us from his second wife? Or is there another way around it? I now have those people who have neither birth nor death dates (eg a distant spouse) having a hyphen showing up and nothing more perfectly logical from what the text scheme is now specifying. ... one way to try to tackle the problem would be to see the detailed structure of LifeDates but I dont know where this is easily available. <<snippet>> Firstly, you cannot inspect LifeDates() because it is a predefined function. Secondly, there is a LifeDates2() function that behaves like your current text scheme, in that the hyphen is shown even when no birth or death dates. Thirdly, the required correction is to replace =ForceText("-") with =TextIf(Exists(%INDI.BIRT.DATE%) or Exists(%INDI.DEAT.DATE%),"-","") The TextIf() function takes a Boolean expression as its first parameter Exists(%INDI.BIRT.DATE%) or Exists(%INDI.DEAT.DATE%) This is 'true' if either a Birth Date or a Death Date exists, but is 'false' if neither exist. When 'true' the second parameter "-" is displayed, which shows the hyphen as required. When 'false' the third parameter "" is displayed, which shows nothing when neither date exists. For more details on functions see Help > Family Historian Help + Using Family Historian + Advanced Topics + Understanding Functions + Functions (by category/all) Regards, Mike Tate ------------------------------ Message: 8 Date: Tue, 16 Aug 2011 19:17:46 +0100 From: "Anne Cole" <duncalf@one-name.org> Subject: Re: [FHU] Another query re partners rather than married To: <family-historian-users@rootsweb.com> Message-ID: <D98C3EAEE5C944F4B88680017887A086@AnnePC> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Thank you Jane, Lorna and Simon.
