In the latest Family Historian Bulletin e-mail, there is a Version 4 Tip about the "No Offspring" marker on diagrams. Not knowing of this before, I tried it but, even though I followed the instructions, I could not get it to work. It was only when I specifically set the "Count of Children" to a zero value (instead of an empty field) that it worked. However, if you run the Standard Query "Count of Children (per Individual)", it (correctly) gives a zero value against individuals with none. Therefore, why does the "No Offspring" marker only work if you have specifically entered a zero value. Whilst on this subject, surely the "Count of Children" field (and "Count of Marriages") should be calculated automatically by Family Historian based on the details entered for an Individual rather than being able to be entered by the user. Many thanks Brian
Brian - Thanks for raising this. I've wondered about it for years. It doesn't work correctly in V.3 either, speaking as an unreconstructed user. Brian, The "No Offspring" marker is intended to indicated that a woman definitely has no descendants. The "No Offspring" marker needs the "Count of Children" set to zero, because otherwise it may simply be that your research has not yet uncovered any children/offspring for the woman in question. The Standard Query "Count of Children (per Individual)" does as it says on the tin, which is not the same as the purpose of the "No Offspring" marker. I imagine the "Count of Children" and "Count of Marriages" attributes allow you to record that you have discovered how many children or marriages an individual has had, but your research has not yet uncovered any details or you don't wish to record the details. -----Original Message----- From: family-historian-users-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:family-historian-users-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Brian Horridge Sent: 01 August 2011 18:38 To: family-historian-users@rootsweb.com Subject: [FHU] No Offspring Marker In the latest Family Historian Bulletin e-mail, there is a Version 4 Tip about the "No Offspring" marker on diagrams. Also, thanks to all the others who gave their views. Brian
