I use the "Count of Children" to reflect how many children a mother had in the 1911 census. So, for example my great-grandmother had 7 children (Count of Children = 7) but I only have information about 5 as 2 of them were dead in 1911 and seem to have died between censuses. Likewise, I set Count of Children= 0 only when I know for certain there were no children. -----Original Message----- From: family-historian-users-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:family-historian-users-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Brian Horridge Sent: 01 August 2011 18:38 To: family-historian-users@rootsweb.com Subject: [FHU] No Offspring Marker In the latest Family Historian Bulletin e-mail, there is a Version 4 Tip about the "No Offspring" marker on diagrams. Not knowing of this before, I tried it but, even though I followed the instructions, I could not get it to work. It was only when I specifically set the "Count of Children" to a zero value (instead of an empty field) that it worked. However, if you run the Standard Query "Count of Children (per Individual)", it (correctly) gives a zero value against individuals with none. Therefore, why does the "No Offspring" marker only work if you have specifically entered a zero value. Whilst on this subject, surely the "Count of Children" field (and "Count of Marriages") should be calculated automatically by Family Historian based on the details entered for an Individual rather than being able to be entered by the user. I was given a list of the children of my great, great grandfather, it included the names of each wife and how many children of each sex each one had, lovely, I thought. In the 1911 census I found two 'strange' children living with my great, great grandmother from the other side of the family who lived several hundred miles away. I just had to send for the birth certificates, the boy was yet another of my great, great grandmothers children (no father!), the girl belonged to my great aunt who according to my list never married and didn't have any children. She never did marry, so that was correct, the census for both households was also correct as they weren't married and could honestly say that they didn't have any children from that marriage! So I would say treat the phrase 'no children' with care! Apart from the birth certificates and entry on the census I haven't been able to find out any more about either of these children, they seem to have just disappeared.
