McAfee and Norton are well known for using huge amounts of resource on a computer, I stopped using either years ago and noticed an immediate improvement in speed. These days, unless you have specialist requirements there are plenty of good and free anti-virus programs that will do the job. Both Avira and AVG offer free versions which are perfectly adequate for most people. Neither will hog your resources.
