As you will know if you have been following recent threads, a recent update of some McAfee anti-virus products have apparently caused Family Historian to crash whenever it is run. Some McAfee users got round the problem by running their computers in Safe mode, or by uninstalling McAfee. We contacted McAfee about this problem, and urged everyone who experienced the problem to do likewise. I'm very pleased to say that today we have heard back from McAfee to say that they have fixed the problem. They say: "This issue has been corrected. Please instruct your users to update their McAfee protection to the latest DAT version 6475 released today [i.e. yesterday - tuesday]". I suspect that the rollout of this new update (and probably all updates) will be staggered, to avoid everyone trying to download the same files simultaneously. So it may take a while before everyone gets the new update. If you try to update manually and are told that you already have the latest version, this may just mean that the new version isn't available for you yet. It looks as though Richard North has already got it, and hopefully everyone else will soon too. There have already been several posts on the FHUG from people who say that they have manually updated McAfee and all is now well again. Incidentally, if you don't know how to manually update, you probably don't need to do it. If you wait for a while, I would expect that your McAfee antivirus product will update itself automatically eventually anyway. I'm sorry so many of you had to go through this, but thank you very much to everyone who helped to track down the source of the problem, and who complained to McAfee and BT (they bundle McAfee in one of their products). I have no doubt that the fast response by McAfee was due in large part to the number of complaints they received. These complaints may not have been limited to Family Historian users either. Nick Walker has pointed out in the FHUG that we are not the only program that has been recently affected by conflict with McAfee. The link he gave was to a games forum where they were experiencing the same problem. There may be others.
Simon As a semi-techie, I'd be interested in an explanation as to exactly what the McAfee "bug" actually did to stop FH working. Have McAfee given an explanation to you ?? McAfee is renowned for causing problems to all sorts of other software packages from time to time. Why people continue to use them I don't know - there are better alternatives available that do not cause such issues and still free. And no, I don't want to start another thread on this !!!
