I don't want to tempt fate but I too have not experienced any problems. I have a Dell Studio desktop running Windows 7 Home Premium (32 bit) service pack 1 with automatic updates, Family Historian 4.1.3, and an up-to-date copy of McAfee. I do not have the parental controls option of McAfee switched on, nor am I currently using QuickClean, which I understand is supposed to clean up unused system files and registry entries. I wonder if this is cleaning up things that FH uses...? Despite this posting, offered as a potential help in identifying the problem, I respectfully suggest to other list-members that we do not start a "mine's working OK too" chain of postings unless there's something constructive to add - otherwise my In Box will get quickly full! I use Norton as well. Ive done a brief test for about 10 minutes and all was well. I have an acer aspire 7736g with windows 7 Professional. I normally use Roots Magic nowadays, as personally I find it much easier to use without having to use computer skills, and it copes well with masses of extra detail etc. I also use various other popular family progs on and off, but still after all these years use the old Dos version of Pedigree as my original and master copy, and then gedcom down to all the mod progs as needed. Media is dealt with using Picassa etc. My McAfee doesn't include web protection, but does include everything else of theirs. Norton does the web job. -----Original Message----- From: family-historian-users-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:family-historian-users-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Simon Orde Sent: 19 September 2011 13:37 To: FHU Mailing List Subject: [FHU] *** Conflict with McAfee We have received a number of reports recently from users who have found that FH crashes when they try to run it. It appears that this problem (which affects both version 3 and version 4 users of Family Historian) has been caused by some editions of the McAfee antivirus program and has been triggered by a recent McAfee update (antivirus programs automatically update themselves periodically). The problem has been mentioned on this Mailing List in the "Program suddenly crashes" thread of discussion. There is much more about it in forum discussions in the Family Historian User Group (FHUG) website: http://www.fhug.org.uk/cgi-bin/index.cgi?action=forum&board=v4use&op=display &num=5416&start=45#48 If you are affected, I strongly recommend that you click on that link and read the posts. We have already emailed McAfee and asked them to fix the problem - but they are very difficult to get through to. We are asking everyone affected to also email McAfee directly if you haven't already done so. The more people who do this, the sooner they are likely to respond. Getting through to AntiVirus companies is often very difficult because they get such a huge volume of emails. Also, their systems are highly automated and designed to deal with submitted program samples, which the sender believes either (i) may contain a virus, or (ii) is a "false positive". Neither of these apply in this case. McAfee isn't detecting anything wrong with Family Historian. It is simply causing it to crash. Antivirus products should never cause other programs to crash; so this is just a bug. We believe that if you email McAfee's virus labs at Virus_Research@avertlabs.com with the word "noauto" in the subject line, there is a good chance that your email will get through. Without the word "noauto" it will be treated automatically as a virus/"false positive" submission. In your email, please explain clearly what has happened and why they need to respond urgently. If you have a BT product (some BT products come bundled with McAfee), do please complain to BT too. They are likely to be in a good position to put pressure on McAfee to act quickly. And if you have already emailed McAfee or BT - thank you! It's much appreciated. In a day or two, hopefully, McAfee will have fixed the problem. When they do, the fix will be rolled out by automatic update and FH will start working again. If anyone who had the problem notices that FH has suddenly started working again, please post here to say so, so that those people who have uninstalled McAfee or who have disabled updates, can try and work out when it's safe for them to re-enable McAfee again. Many thanks.
