Morning All I have a dilemma, when I started researching my family history I was a bit silly and got carried away finding family etc but didn't think about recording sources. On looking at my files I have information in my tree but I haven't recorded the sources for a lot of it. Is there any way of running a query that would show me all the people and information put in without sources or do I have no option but to re-input all my information in a separate file missing out the information without sources until I go back over and recheck it. I obviously want to make sure that if anyone looks at my research they will know where and how I found it, whilst I don't mind inputting it all again I would prefer not to. Thanks Yasmin
Hi Yasmin, Do not start another file - you can work with the data you have. To discover which Facts have no sources, and assuming you have FH V4.1, then start with View > Standard Queries > All Facts. This lists every Fact for every Individual, you will probably have hundreds if not thousands. Use the Query Menu option top right to Save As Custom Query called say All Facts Without Sources. On its Rows tab add the Filter: Condition: Add if... Expression: %FACT.SOUR[1]>% Operator: is null Then the Result Set will only list Facts without Sources. Click on any column heading to group Fact labels or Owner names together. On the Columns tab, you may find the following more useful: Fact Details %FACT% Fact Owner =GetRecord(%FACT%) Regards, Mike Tate -----Original Message----- From: family-historian-users-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:family-historian-users-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Yasmin Sent: 15 January 2012 12:02 To: family-historian-users@rootsweb.com Subject: [FHU] Advice re lack of source material Morning All I have a dilemma, when I started researching my family history I was a bit silly and got carried away finding family etc but didn't think about recording sources. Yasmin, Further to my earlier reply, I wondered if you were aware of the FHUG at http://www.fhug.org.uk/cgi-bin/index.cgi Among other things it offers the free Ancestral Sources add-on for FH. Many users find this offers a more convenient way of capturing Sources for various Facts. Currently it supports Census and Baptism events, but Birth, Marriage, Death and Probate are on the cards. It allows the Sources to either create new Facts or update existing Facts. I would like to reassure you that it is quite usual for Individuals to be added to your data on flimsy evidence. The challenge is then to research the Sources to confirm the Facts. Some users create a To Do List for their research, and the FHUG offers some advice on creating such a list. See the Create Work In Progress or Research To Do Lists at http://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=how_to:create_work_in_progress_or_research_to_do_lists Regards, Mike Tate -----Original Message----- From: family-historian-users-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:family-historian-users-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Yasmin Sent: 15 January 2012 12:02 To: family-historian-users@rootsweb.com Subject: [FHU] Advice re lack of source material Morning All I have a dilemma, when I started researching my family history I was a bit silly and got carried away finding family etc but didn't think about recording sources.
