Re: [FHU] Advice re lack of source materialThanks, John. I am indeed still on V3. As far as my own personal needs are concerned, I have always been a bit conservative - "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" to coin a phrase. I liked the look of V4 until I heard all the wails about "can't find data" due to this new "project" approach. I had set up my own highly ordered data structure and didn't want to change it. Having said that, I will eventually have to bite the bullet. I have a birthday coming up, so maybe I should have a new, up to date installation disc instead of an old one and a string of updates! Thanks also to Beryl & Mike for confirming the answer. Possibly you are on V3 (I'm guessing wildly)? Perhaps Mike T, Jane or Simon can enlighten? John
<<snipped>> I liked the look of V4 until I heard all the wails about "can't find data" due to this new "project" approach. I had set up my own highly ordered data structure and didn't want to change it. <<snipped>> At risk of reopening long running debates, I also had my own highly ordered data structure and found it easy to move it into the structure of projects. I even managed to get all the media moved into the same structure, although in that case it was more difficult simply because my media was (were?) all over the place. The key is to read the advice on the FHUG site (I think it's there!) about what projects do where and think beforehand. Even create a mini-project experiment just to make sure you understand things. And then think about it again! Adrian B
John and Adrian, Thank you both for the advice - it's good news that I won't be in for a major upheaval. Hi John, I agree with Adrian - I would recommend you do move to V4 and Projects. I, too, had my own well ordered data structure, but I found these moved across to a Project intact and without a hitch. Just take it carefully; read all the instructions and help. Take a copy of your existing data structure and do a trial conversion on that first. Strongly recommend purchasing a full installation version for V4, rather than yet another upgrade. I bought an upgrade, but the had to go back to buying a full version when I wanted to install V4 on a second machine (as the licence allows) only to find I'd lost my installation key for V3!! Calico did allow me do do so by paying the difference, rather than full price again. If you're not already using it, I also thoroughly recommend Ancestral Sources, the replacement for Gedcom Census. And a pre-emptive Happy Birthday!
