Peter Folder and Directory are mostly different names for the same thing. The exceptions are the "Folders" which are called "My Documents" and the like. They are virtual folders which provide easy links to files in "real" directories. Windows 7 has "libraries" which are also virtual. The danger they create is that if you delete something from a virtual folder it sometimes does not delete the file from the real folder but knowing when it has deleted the file is not always obvious.
