    3. Thank you Mike and EJP, I now have a clearer understanding about transferring the media when merging. Unfortunately I have now encountered difficulties when trying to make a copy of one of the projects and so I have taken your advice Mike and posted all on the FHUG forum. Thanks again to both of you Stewart -----Original Message----- From: EJ Pratt Sent: Thursday, March 08, 2012 12:16 AM To: family-historian-users@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [FHU] Merging Two Projects I recently merged 7 projects (mostly small). Four of them had media files. >From memory(?) I completed the merge process for individuals, families, sources etc & then copied the four folders containing the media into this final merged project media folder. Then use 'Tools - work with external file links' to ensure all media links are restored. -----Original Message----- From: family-historian-users-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:family-historian-users-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Beryl & Mike Tate Sent: Thursday, 8 March 2012 7:07 AM To: family-historian-users@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [FHU] Merging Two Projects I don't believe there is 'an option to transfer the media'. If you are merging the entire Project, then simply copy the entire Media folder to the merged Project's Media folder using Windows Explorer. Are you a member of the Family Historian User Group (FHUG) at http://www.fhug.org.uk/cgi-bin/index.cgi ? It is free to join and full of free advice, tutorials, knowledge base, and software, etc. There was a recent posting at http://www.fhug.org.uk/cgi-bin/index.cgi?action=forum&board=Usage&op=display&num=5980 On merging two large trees with a successful outcome. You could ask about Media on that forum thread. There are also several others on a similar topic. Is it simply a case of an option to transfer the media or does it have to be done as a separate process in another way afterwards? Thanks Stewart -----Original Message----- From: Beryl & Mike Tate Sent: Tuesday, March 06, 2012 10:44 PM To: family-historian-users@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [FHU] Merging Two Projects Stewart, Your understanding is reasonably correct. Strictly speaking you don't have to create a copy of both Projects, just the one you are merging into (referred to as the Current file in FH). The Project you are merging from (referred to as the New file in FH) should only ever be read from and not changed. I think the Merge only affects the GEDCOM file, so I suspect the media images will need a separate process. (Others will correct me if I am wrong). Using Tools Work with External File Links will identify those media that need to be copied. Ive read what I can of the process but I have a fear that it could go wrong! I have back ups of both projects but still feel that I want a belt and braces method in case things dont merge smoothly! Am I able to do the following? Can I use the More Tasks in the Project Window to create a copy of both of the projects and then use these 2 new copies to merge together? If thing go wrong then I presume that my original 2 projects will still be unscathed. I hope that my understanding is accurate! Another thing I need to clarify is whether or not all the saved images in the respective media folders will be automatically included in the merge or is this a separate process? If you have the lateset version (4.1) Family Historian will give you the option to copy any linked multimedia into the current project folder - if you're merging into a project. For something as significant as merging one project into another, I would recommend having a practice run to give yourself a chance to familiarise yourself with the process. For example, you could just create a small test project with two or three people in it, and merge the GEDCOM file from the sample project into it.
