    3. Stewart I am afraid I have no suggestions for cures, but for the record and for comparison, when I run FH (v.4) on this laptop, moving around an all-relatives diagram with some hundred boxes visible at any point, I see two images in the resource monitor marked Fh.exe. One shows a Commit figure of 4,020 KB (4MB), which hardly changes whatever happens in FH, and the other 216,508KB (i.e. 0.2GB compared to your 1.9GB). The latter drops to 60MB if I close the chart, and rises to 361MB if I open an Everyone diagram (3629 people). This is in Win7 Pro 64bit on an i7 quad-processor with 8GB of memory. The 9 processes for my AVG firewall/virus checker etc use about 150 MB between them. 3. Thanks Ian It seems that my processor is pretty well as powerful as yours but I have only 6 GB of memory. I generally work using the diagrams window and its really disappointing to get this malfunction- whatever's causing it. I have so many more images that I wanted to add to the media file but it's clear that I'm simply going to make the situation worse. I had simply assumed that F.H. could take an endless number of images- - I had thought that the program automatically reduced the saved image to a size that the program could not be overloaded. I've now scaled down the diagram display to 75% and my images are now visible as a result. Unfortunately I don't seem able to maintain this reduction and have to reset it each time that I open the program! I can't believe that I've reached a point when all I can do is cross my fingers and hope that all will be well when I use version 5! Oh well ...what's on tv ?! 3. Stewart I would hope that version 5 should solve your problem. It uses a much more memory efficient way of displaying pictures in diagrams and reports (and the new books), and with faster diagram loading speed, than previously. Even in V4, you should be able to add as many pictures as you like to a *project* pretty well indefinitely, without adding any measurable burden on FH per se. Of course if you then display a diagram which uses more pictures than previously, the overheads of this will of course have increased - but as I say, this situation is much improved in V5. The only other consideration is that when you start a project, both in V4 and V5, FH will by default load thumbnails in the background, to make the display of pictures in the Focus Window and the Multimedia Window faster. This should not cause problems, but the memory used by FH will temporarily increase while this is happening. You can tell FH to not do it if you want to, for whatever reason. To do that, open Preferences on the Tools menu, and click the Advanced button on the General tab, and untick "Auto-load Thumbnail Images when opening Project". However, I recommend that you only untick this option if you have some good reason to do so because if you do untick it, you will have to wait longer for pictures to appear when you first view them in the Focus Window and the Multimedia Window. 3. <<snippet>> I've now scaled down the diagram display to 75% and my images are now visible as a result. Unfortunately I don't seem able to maintain this reduction and have to reset it each time that I open the program! <<snippet>> To preserve the scale and any other settings, use Diagram > Save Diagram As > Custom Diagram Type and give it a name of your choice. Then subsequently use View > Custom Diagrams and choose the named Diagram Type. The five Standard Diagrams (at the top of the View > Standard Diagrams list) do not preserve the scale setting. It is advised that you do not change the settings of these five Standard Diagrams without taking precautions. 3. Many thanks to Simon and Mike, Simon - I unticked the "Auto-load Thumbnail Images when opening Project"- I agree, the images were much slower as you said they would be! Mike- thanks for the tip on how to maintain the scale reduction- it worked! However, I found that the best method of working around my problem was to simply reduce the number of ancestors and descendants in the diagram. This setting is remembered by the program and my images are visible without having to rescale the whole diagram. Thanks again to anyone who's tried to help, Stewart -----Original Message----- From: Beryl & Mike Tate Sent: Thursday, March 01, 2012 11:29 AM To: family-historian-users@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [FHU] Memory troubles <<snippet>> I've now scaled down the diagram display to 75% and my images are now visible as a result.
