    3. Windows 10 has its own file unzipper: Just: Open File Explorer and find the zipped folder. To unzip the entire folder, right-click (or press and hold) it, select Extract All, then follow the instructions. To unzip a single file or folder, double-click the zipped folder to open it. Then, drag or copy the item from the zipped folder to a new location. (words taken directly from http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows-10/zip-and-unzip-files#v1h=tab02 ) Hope this helps, Graham On 18-Jan-16 5:58 PM, Sheila Beer via wrote: > I've foolishly saved my work as a zipped file instead of a GEDCOM file. > > Now I can't open it and work on it in Family Historian (version 2 3) - > anyone know how to do this, in words of one syllable please (bit of a dimbo > as far a computers are concerned). > > I work in Windows 10 > > Thanks > > Sheila > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to FAMILY-HISTORIAN-USERS-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message > >

    3. Yes, WinZip and Gedcom are different file formats. To look in compressed archive files, I think 7Zip (http://www.7-zip.org/) is an excellent alternative to Winzip, and there is no cost to use it. So long as the file isn't damaged, it can probably inflate it for you. -- Ed On 1/18/2016 10:30 AM, Victor via wrote: > I have not been able to open a WinZip file for a long time and am trying to resolve this by downloading WinZip but I find it is not the same as it used to be and there is an annual fee. I had thought that if I created a separate tab that functioned the same way as the Notes tab but called it To Do then that would work but I couldn't fathom out how to do it or how to print out all the To Do's for the tree. 3. If all you want is to create some Notes, then use the FH Notes. In the Records Window, click the Notes tab, and create as many Notes as you like. Or add So and So, and Fred Blogs, and J. Smith to a Named List and add those Notes to each one at the bottom. It would be easier to show you in the FHUG Forums that can attach screen-shots. FH offers more general purpose tools that can be used for many things. e.g. Instead of giving a set of times tables (To Do Lists) it gives you a calculator (Named Lists) that offer not only times tables (To Do Lists) but other things too. You just have to be a bit more imaginative to use them. So just give one Named List the name To Do List and you are done. 3. Hi Diane I use the Named List facility for my 'to do'. I have a number of 'To Do' lists; 'General Queries', 'Census Lookups' (a separate one for each year), 'Work in Progress' etc. I populate the Census List with all my missing entries for a particular year with a Query and I have a Flag which is set when I have downloaded the image so I don't look for it twice. Also, I populate a list for all the BMDs missing for a given surname. Many of my Sources state the record office/parish where I think the records are kept, I can then run my 'Missing BMD' report by office/parish and take it with me on my travels. You will note that you get a number of preset Lists, you can rename them or create your own. Go to the Help facility and choose 'Named Lists'. It would seem I have to learn Lua programming but really don't have the time at the moment and may not have the inclination for some time. Does anyone have a solution as to how I can incorporate this facility into FH (if it isn't already available and I've just not seen it) and if so is it possible to have the instructions in idiot format? I have only been using the program for a few days (after transferring my data) so am a real "Newbie". ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to FAMILY-HISTORIAN-USERS-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    3. Examples of yet another way to publish digitally can be seen at my site http://www.rudkindata.co.uk/publications.html The examples shown have been produced at virtually no cost by using a combination of Family Historian, The Complete Genealogy Reporter (TCGR) program (www.tcgr.bufton.org) and Open Office (https://www.openoffice.org/) all running very comfortably on a Mac using a Parallels Virtual Machine. Download the GEDCOM you wish to draw from from Family Historian to TCGR, compose it to the content you require - including hyperlinks if required - transfer it quickly and simply to the free Open Office or the free Libre Office (https://www.libreoffice.org/) - or to Word if you must ! - then begin to write your story around it. Transfer it (copy and paste) in sections or chapters to the Pages program on the Mac which (after a bit of a learning curve) gives enourmous facility to add or manipulate further text, to design and refine the appearance of the book and include photographs, diagrams etc and then, when satisfied with it, export it to your Documents folder as a PDF file retaining hyp! erlinks and security features (if using). From there there are several options including, for example, upload to Dropbox so that links to it can be provided to users, or upload to Kindle (through ‘Manage your Kindle’ - within certain size limits), or - if you have very large file size - send full copies to users via HighTail Express (www.hightail.com/) Also on the Mac, using the Preview thumbnail facility you can then, within limits, mix and match PDFs if you need to. The FlipBook examples shown on the rudkindata link were produced quite simply, for free, on FlipHTML5 (http://fliphtml5.com/) from the uploaded PDF. These could either be embedded or linked (as the examples are) in your website or you could give links for easy access to individual readers or - if you use the pro version of the fliphtml5 program - copies can be sold through it as well. The downside of the flip book idea is that it can sometimes be a little slow in downloading and is best seen on larger screens. Be assured that I have no links to any of the service sites mentioned other than as a satisfied user of them. Contact thro rudkindata if you would like more info. 3. Karen, that is the same conclusion I came to. I would like to get my desk cleared - that sounded like the beginning of a joke, didin't it? Then devote my time to getting started. I thought I would try the PDF route first as that seems like less formatting to meet their criteria. Truth to tell, when I was working we had genuine publishing software and Word is not. Unlearn theirs and learn Word 2003 since that is what is on my computer. Or Open Office. It's discouraging to sit down to do something and then have to find a tutorial for it. I will take a look at the other programs suggested. I like to hold the paper in my hands. Often times I will print something from the web so that I can sit with my highlighter and mark the pedigree lines in colors to keep track of who I'm looking at. Maybe an ebook would be the best way to go for price. I want my book to be cheap enough that people searching would buy it on the off chance this is the line they are looking for. I want it to be cousin bait. I have at least 2 brick walls. I would be in heaven if those 3 Bailey brothers hadn't had a fight and moved to 3 different parts of the country! Or equally irksome, if there wouldn't have been space ships to deliver and unicorn nursemaids to raise my Ward ancestor. There is an old published Bailey history but it has lots of errors, especially marrying my great great grandparents to the wrong siblings! I need to get the correct information "out there". I think I will also do a price comparison for splitting the book.
