Hello Mike, Firstly, you are absolutely not butting in. I really appreciate the help you have given in the past, here and on the forum. I have downloaded many of the help files and have to tell you that at first they were not the easiest instructions to follow. I have followed the instructions from Brian (who you have conversed with on another thread), which contained screen shots, on how to create a custom attribute and it is only now, after using these instructions, that I understand the help files. They are now perfectly clear. I wonder if it's possible for future help files to include screen shots? Please tell me I'm not the only one having problems following help files! Excuse me butting in, but I suggest you wait until more familiar with FH before using some of the more advanced features. One snag with linked Word or PDF documents is that they do not get included in Reports. May I suggest you join the FHUG for free at http://www.fhug.org.uk/ where there are Q& A Forums, Knowledge Base, free Downloads, all with screenshots, video tutorials, and much more. There is a special section for newcomers to get you up the learning curve more quickly: http://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=how_to:key_features_for_newcomers Also a tutorial on creating To Do Lists plus free downloads to set them up: http://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=how_to:create_work_in_progress_or_research_to_do_lists Regards, Mike Tate -----Original Message----- Subject: Re: [FHU] To Do List & Wordprocessor Guy, That would be useful but can you give instructions on how to do it? Cheers Guy
The FHUG Forum postings should support most screenshot image formats (JPEG, JPG, PNG, GIF, TGA, TIF, TIFF). There is a file size limit of 256 Kbytes, but that is enough for most screenshots, and any larger will be too big to view easily. Remember to not only 'Browse' to select the file, but also click the 'Add the file' button. Very long postings are difficult to follow, so describe the process in steps with up to 3 attachments per step. Just keep adding steps by Replying to your own posting. The snag with postings is that after a while they may become difficult to find. SO ALTERNATIVELY, add an article to the FHUG Knowledge Base linked to the existing article. Perhaps a reference to a Worked Example from the Custom Attributes Approach section. The Knowledge Base has less restrictions on images, and is easier to structure a tutorial. I am happy to guide you and edit your entry if you get stuck. Brian, I do something very similar with a "Work Outstanding" custom attribute: * The attribute summarises what needs to be done * The Note carries any amplification * Place carries the detail of where I need to do the work o PRONI, Belfast, Northern Ireland, o TNA, London, England o FindMyPast.com o etc * Address might be (misused) to indicate the type of records o Parish Records o Marriage Certificate o etc. * If I know the specific records set (e.g.. WO/95) that I want to look at I attach it as a Source (Method 2!) * I am in two minds as to whether to use the date field as a sort of priority indicator - putting future dates in does ensure all the Work Outstanding Facts are gathered at the end of the individual's property window and hence easily reviewed at an individual level. Then a query on that attribute like you, sorted by Place, gives me a list prior to each visit. Hi Diane I seem to have achieved some success using a combination of a custom attribute which I've called "To Do" that allows me to populate an individual's fact tab with as many To Do's as I wish. I can do this all across my project and using the attribute's note field can enter my prompt - it can be anything. Then by creating a custom query that accepts only "To Do" facts/attributes and displaying the individual and the relevant note I end up with a whole list of jobs TO DO that I can print out and take along with me. As soon as I've satisfied my quest, simply delete the appropriate TO DO. It works for me - so far and indeed once I'd battled the mysteries of setting up a query seems to be just what I need and what's more it's not tied to any established "Facts". It's not the finished article by any means and others may wish to suggest alternatives but it achieves what I want. I'd be happy to send some screen shots but don't know if there is a "To Do List" topic on FHUG to add it to. Hi Sheila, I'm afraid I can't remember exactly what options were available in version 2.3 but more recent versions have an option to backup the Gedcom from within FH and the result is always a zipped file. However if you simply SAVE the Gedcom it will not be zipped. To restore from a backup in recent versions you use the FH commands File > Backup/Restore > Restore Backup. If this is not available in version 2.3 can you explain exactly what commands you used to create the zipped file? Did you do it from within the FH program? Lorna > I get the impression that the file HAS to open within Family Historian not > a just an ordinary file. > > Just to repeat, I work using Family Historian version 2 3 and windows 10 >
Sheila, A long shot but worth excluding given the possible confusion as to how this situation arose and the invalidity of the zip file: 1. Copy the file 2. Rename the copied file from FamilyTree.zip to FamilyTree.ged (or whatever you file is called) 3. See if the renamed file will open in Family Historian. I'm not on Windows 10, so am not sure how you get to see the file extension; I suspect that there is an option setting in File Explorer (or whatever Win10 calls it) to show extensions. Thanks to those that replied to my original post I think, maybe, the problem is that I worked on a file previously saved as a GEDCOM file then saved the updated version as a zipped file and I don;t think the windows 10 unzipper can work it out. When I try as explained on http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows-10/zip-and-unzip-files#v1h=tab02 a message appears that says Windows cannot complete the extraction .zip is invalid. When I ask it to open, by right click, it says file is empty, yet when I look at the properties it tells me there is 3.12MB I get the impression that the file HAS to open within Family Historian not a just an ordinary file. Just to repeat, I work using Family Historian version 2 3 and windows 10
