    1. [FHU] Problems with page 1 of Book
    2. Robin via
    3. I am trying to create a Book of my ancestors for my grandchildren. When I create the book and view it in FH it looks ok. When I save it as a pdf file page 1 has changed. In the book the bottom of page 1 is 2nd generation, in the pdf file it is a list of sources and the 2nd generation is missing. Pages 2 onwards are the ok. The missing 2nd generation is nowhere to be found. Anyone else found this or similar issue with creating a book? I am using the latest version of FH on a Windows 8.1 desktop. Robin Dew

    3. Mike Thanks for the various bits of information. Some of them I may use in the future (if I can remember them all!!). Regarding some of your other points I think we'll have to agree to disagree. To answer your question about my non-use of AS - I personally wanted to specifically identify my 1939 Register entries as such. In order to use AS I would have had to have accepted the use of the Census tag which I did not want to do. Also, AS does not allow bulk input from a spreadsheet so early on I'd accepted that I'd have to write my own bit of code so therefore I could do whatever I wanted for my own use. I've written a lot of software myself and fully appreciate that for a wide used base compromises have to be accepted otherwise it can get very complicated - however when it's just for yourself you can do what you like. Again, thanks for all your help on this forum. 3. I'd just like to clarify a few points, partly for the benefit of others, and then I'll call it a day. Although the use of Flags stems from pre-Ver4 they still have to be managed today as each Individual condition changes. Substitute a handful of Expressions, and that management is no longer needed, and the Flags can be deleted. Expressions can be much more complex than my simple example, and could easily test the Place fields of many Facts and return true if "USA" was found in any of them, so only one Column is needed, not multiple Columns. As a matter of interest what was it about AS 1939 events you did not like? I presume you know there is a custom AS Template for the 1939 Register. Designers of software tools such as AS and Plugins have to make a decision about how to handle the 1939 Register. >From a purely software perspective it is a no-brainer to use the standard Census Event because no extra programming is required. If that is not used what would takes its place? Yes a custom fact, but which one? Unless everyone agrees to use the same one, those software tools cannot easily support them without a special dialogue to choose the custom fact. When using genealogy software (or anything else for that matter) it is quite common to have make some compromises when it does not work exactly how we want it to, but that is the price we pay for having an off-the-shelf product. As long as the associated Sources and Notes make it clear the fact is about the 1939 Register, does it matter it uses the Gedcom CENSus tag? That of course is a personal decision. Regards, Mike Tate -----Original Message----- Subject: Re: [FHU] Showing specific Occupation on diagram Mike A lot of my Flags were added long before FH Ver 4 when "Conditions" became available so I've carried on using them. A specific case is my own ONS USA Flag - I have a single flag which I set if the individual had any one of several records that put them in the USA (ie birth, death, marriage, census, passenger list etc.) Therefore I have one single column instead of having to have multiple columns each with their own conditions. Personally, I'm not bothered about not having use of the other things you mention that I will lose - if they are important to me I've found other ways of getting the information. I've already said that I did not like the way Ancestral Sources handled 1939 events so I've done my own version. Re the 1939 Register - I fully understand that it is being regarded as a Census but strictly speaking it was not a census - it was a survey that gives a list of people alive at that moment in time and their address, DoB and occupation. Treating it as a census because it fits in better with the way a family history program works is not, in my mind, a proper research methodology. Brian

    1. Re: [FHU] Showing specific Occupation on diagram
    2. Beryl & Mike Tate via
    3. Brian, the snag with Flags is you have to remember to set and clear them when the condition they flag changes. Whereas Expressions are totally automatic. Just create them once and forget them forever. So instead of a Diagram Box Flag Condition you have a Diagram Box Expression Condition. For a 1901 Census the Expression would be =Exists(%INDI.CENS[year=1901]%) instead of the Census 1901 Flag. That pattern repeats for each Census year (or any other facts). Then whenever you add (or remove) a Census Event its Diagram Icon follows suit automatically. No messing about adding or removing Individual Flags is needed. The same Expression can be used in Queries, Record Window Columns, Property Box tabs, etc. See http://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=how_to:using_flags_and_icons_and_expressions Regarding the 1939 Register all the indications are that it used the planned 1941 Census rules and is a Census in all but name. By NOT using a standard Census Event are you aware that: Those custom Register Facts may not migrate well to any other genealogy product. The FH "Publish > Miscellaneous Reports > Individual Census Report" will not work. The "Lookup Missing Census Facts" Plugin will not work. The "Occupations Per Census Year and Gender" Plugin will not work. The "Show Project Statistics" Plugin will not report Census details. The "Standard Diagram Text Schemes" for Census will need adapting. "Ancestral Sources" only supports the standard Census Event. Probably others... If you are concerned about the Narrative Sentence wording then there is a workaround for that. See http://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=fhugdownloads:contents:ancestral_sources_template_census_uk_1939_register Regards, Mike Tate -----Original Message----- Subject: Re: [FHU] Showing specific Occupation on diagram Thanks for that - I'd forgotten about using the year as a condition (I have done that quite a while ago for my normal census entries). I am using a specific 1939 flag for 2 reasons - firstly so I can show an icon on diagrams that immediately highlights those I've "got" and secondly I use it in queries and the main record window to again quickly show those I have details for. By having a separate flag column it's very easy to re-sort using that flag. The way I use Flags / Icons may not be particularly sophisticated but I find it works for me (which is why I like the superb flexibility of Family Historian) By the way, for various reasons I have decided not to treat my 1939 entries as a census and have created a 1939 Register custom event (I was not completely happy with the way Ancestral Sources added the data). I have written my own bit of PC code to copy details from my 1939 Register Excel transcription spreadsheet into the relevant fields needed in my FH GEDCOMs and this allows me to easily add multiple entries without having to re-type all the details. 3. Yes, use the special year index OCCU[year=1939] as explained in FHUG KB and FH Help pages. http://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=how_to:understanding_data_references Why have a 1939 Flag? Just use the Expression %INDI.CENS[year=1939]% Regards, Mike Tate -----Original Message----- Subject: [FHU] Showing specific Occupation on diagram I've created a specific diagram text scheme that I'm using to cross-check any "finds" I get from the 1939 register. In the diagram I would like to include the 1939 Occupation I have recorded for the individual using the "Occupation" attribute but I only want to include the one Occupation that is dated 29 Sep 1939 and not show any others. I know I can partially solve this by selecting to show the latest and this will generally work but will also show a previous occupation if I've not yet entered their 1939 one. I've also tried using the Flag Condition (I have a specific 1939 Flag) but it still is not exactly what I want. Is there a way of only showing an occupation with a specific date ??

In the diagram I would like to include the 1939 Occupation I have recorded for the individual using the "Occupation" attribute but I only want to include the one Occupation that is dated 29 Sep 1939 and not show any others. I know I can partially solve this by selecting to show the latest and this will generally work but will also show a previous occupation if I've not yet entered their 1939 one. I've also tried using the Flag Condition (I have a specific 1939 Flag) but it still is not exactly what I want. Is there a way of only showing an occupation with a specific date ?? Many thanks Brian

    3. Welcome to the FH world. Like most PC programs, FH does not synch its database with online web based resources. FH does gather 'hints' from MyHeritage online, but to open most record details needs a MyHeritage subscription. Otherwise, you buy FH, and subscribe to Ancestry or FindMyPast or MyHeritage completely separately. You must add to the FH database yourself, but there are several tools to simplify that task. For much more information please join the Family Historian User Group (FHUG) membership is free: http://www.fhug.org.uk/ There are many discussions between existing and future FTM migrants. There are tools designed to help migrate your FTM data and media to FH. There is a Genealogy.com review of migrating FTM to FH V6.0. FH is undergoing development to make it more FTM friendly in V6.1. There is no great rush, as you have at least a year to decide what to do. Regards, Mike Tate -----Original Message----- Subject: [FHU] Switching from FTM to FH Hi I am new to the mail list.
