FH V6 does not (yet) have the Getting the Most From book nor tutorials. Should be published shortly. The V5 book and Tutorials can be downloaded from the Calico Pie download archive or the FHUG Knowledge Base. The Split Tree Helper should NEVER be used on your master Project, but on a copy, because it permanently deletes records. However, the File > Import/Export > Export > GEDCOM File is a much better option, as it uses the same method for selecting records, and does not jeopardise your master Project. But bear in mind that the GEDCOM File will still be the FH dialect with all its custom extensions that the Borders FHS may not recognise. So it may be necessary to use the Export Gedcom File Plugin on the resulting GEDCOM to convert to standard Gedcom 5.5. Also do you wish to include Media files or is it just the Gedcom File? Can I ask for some thoughts on the best way to record details of someone who was in the Home Guard as I've just found 2 people of interest listed in the newly-released County Durham Home Guard Records (part of The National Archives data). Provisionally I've used the Military Service Attribute (from the Military Fact Set) and used a "between" date range for his 5 years of service but it does not look quite right. I suppose "Home Guard" is the equivalent of a normal army unit / Regiment but I can only add that as a Note. I presume that other Home Guard records will be released before too long so I'll probably have others to add. How would others record such information?? Many thanks Brian
I want to send a GEDCOM file of all the descendants of my wife’s 8xg grandmother to the Borders FHS. To do this I need to extract that part of the tree from my FH file. In my Family Historian5 manual, Chapter 15 explains how this can be done. But it seems rather complicated and a warning in red states that data can be lost. The chapter uses the Tutorial files to demonstrate the correct procedure. This is my problem. I cannot find the tutorial files. I go through – File; Project Window; More Tasks; Samples; “Reset Sample Project” and am then asked if I wish to reset the files. Even after resetting, there are no signs of tutorial chapters. This is the path I am asked to follow in Chapter 15 of the FH5 manual. Yesterday I updated to 6.1.4 and had exactly the same problem as I had previously with my 6.0 version. Have I somehow deleted the tutorial files in the past, have they been removed in the various updates or am I looking in the wrong place? Please help! Regards Michael
Thank you, Mike. It appears to have been a cache thing, following the merging of a small old gedcom file (76 people, 4 sources, 34 places), a process I have done many times previously. The system seems to have almost righted itself during several re-starts. I say "almost" because I can still see a few strange inconsistencies in the record lists produced by different routes. However, I will not try to explain until I am sure these symptoms are reproducible. I have a suspicion Windows 10's huge cache "facility" might also have something to do with it, but I am no guru. When FH Saves the Gedcom it actually creates the tmp file you mentioned, and then deletes the original Gedcom file, and renames the tmp file. So something is preventing that renaming by 'using' the file. Did this start when you upgraded to Windows 10? What is the folder location for your Projects? Is it in the OneDrive folder? The 'changes made by another program' message also suggest that some other application is changing the Gedcom file in some way. So all the symptoms point to some other application 'using' the Gedcom file at the same time as FH. Do you have any automatic backup application running? When I click on "save" (just to save GEDcom file) I get the following error message: "Final step of process (file rename) failed - please click re-try. . . . . . you need to consider if any software is running in background." I am not trying to rename the file, just save it. I do have automatic save turned on, but it is a habit I have of saving after I enter a source with media. I have stopped my virus software from running in the background and many other processes, including dropbox, google drive etc, but my problems persist. I also sometimes get an error message saying something similar to "changes have been made in another program do you wish to reload?" but I do not have ancestral sources running at the time. Fortunately a backup tmp file is created when the program fails (which is often) so I haven't lost any information yet, but it is very annoying and pretty scary waiting for the crash to come and having to close down all my processes while using Family Historian. Jayne Have you tried changing to a different folder for the backups? As I rule I never use any of Microsoft's library folders for anything. So, for example my documents go to C:\_Documents on my hard drive and FH backs up to a folder within there. So, the first thing I would do is to create a new folder away from the Library Folders and then see what happens. It could be a rights issue if this works. Oh, first post here/ Hello all. That is unusual. How did you upgrade to FH V6.1.4? Has it just started since upgrading to FH V6.1.4? Does the problem affect all Projects including the "Family Historian Sample Project"? Close FH and try restarting PC to see if that fixes problem. Try running the "Where Used Record Links" Plugin. Thank you Mike - I knew there was an answer in there somewhere - had forgotten the CD/DVD facility.... doh! Am trying to do too much too quickly at the moment; I need to stop, slow down and engage brain. It's not actually for me but for somebody thinking of purchasing Family Historian & I have been singing it's praises but had a mental block with this! Thanks again, problem solved. Yes, they could, but the FH free trial only lasts 30-days, so after that they would be snookered, unless you bought them a gift token. They would also have to learn how to use FH. How long did that take you? They would not have any of your customisations of Diagrams, Reports, Queries, etc, and are not allowed to run Plugins in the trial. If you only send a Gedcom file, then of course there would be no Media images. So you would need to send the whole Project on a USB memory stick or via cloud storage (DropBox, OneDrive, etc). What are the other options? You could use "Publish > Make a Family Tree CD/DVD" and send the output on a USB memory stick or via cloud storage (DropBox, OneDrive, etc). Then your family have all the details and images, and it opens in their web browser (IE, Firefox, Chrome). You could use the "Export Gedcom File" Plugin and publish it in a variety of ways. You could create free online family trees in Ancestry, FindMyPast, or ZoomPast and restrict account access by password. No subscription is required, but in some cases not all the details are faithfully transferred and there are no images (yet). There are some free family history programs similar to FH that will accept both Gedcom and images. Some run on PC and others run on iPads or Android tablets. Further details are in the FHUG Knowledge Base: http://www.fhug.org.uk/ Regards, Mike Tate -----Original Message----- Subject: [FHU] Family reading a gedcom Hi, Wonder if anyone could help me please. Hi, Is it possible to write out my gedcom to represent the De Villiers Numbering system where the first child of the Progenitor is b1, his children is c1-? and so on. An example is shown below: Christiaan Pieterse * 02.01.1700 x Cape Town 12.09.1727 Maria LE ROUX b1 Christiaan * Cape Town 01.08.1728 ≈ Stellenbosch 20.9.1728 † 30.09.1830 x Bethlehem 10.10.1751 Anna Maria OPPERMAN c1 Catharina Maria ≈ Stellenbosch 29.10.1752 c2 Christiaan Rudolph ≈ Stellenbosch 29.3.1755 x Tulbagh 11.5.1788 Maria Magdalena BURGER d1 Christiaan Rudolph ≈ Tulbagh 5.7.1789 I would appreciate any help to lead me on the right track. Do I do it with a query? Regards Herman du Plooy
Hi Herman, I have a Plugin that will produce a variety of numbering systems including De Villiers/Pama, but I need a few more details. Where do you want the numbers written? Do you just want an on screen display such as a Query Result Set, that could be printed? Do you want the numbers saved in say the Custom Id field of each descendant? Will the root person always be the same or could it be anyone in your database? As I understand it the numbers b1 or c2 or d3 on their own are insufficient because they don't define the ancestor. e.g. In your example is d1 the child of c1 or c2? So the full number should be each number in descendant order, e.g. a.b1.c2.d1 It would be easier to continue this dialogue in the FHUG Forums where I can attach the Plugin for you to try. http://www.fhug.org.uk/forum/ Regards, Mike Tate -----Original Message----- Subject: [FHU] De Villiers Numbering System Is it possible to write out my gedcom to represent the De Villiers Numbering system where the first child of the Progenitor is b1, his children is c1-? and so on. A good starting point is to use View > Standard Queries > All Events and click on the Events column heading to sort all the Birth Events together. That gives you an idea of what is possible, and by customising that into Custom Query will give exactly what you requested. The FHUG http://www.fhug.org.uk gives advice on how to achieve that customisation. My first serious program was Generations too, and since then I've been through Legacy and RootsMagic before planning to switch to FH. I can't decide yet about Ancestral Sources. Although I do have quite a backlog of data to enter (and more keeps appearing online, though I shouldn't really be complaining about that), I don't think there's going to be anywhere near as much new stuff as I already have in the .ged file from RM, so it may be of limited use to me. Even without Ancestral Sources, I was expecting FH's inbuilt ability to copy and paste facts to significantly improve my data entry rate over what it was in RM. (This is a feature that I used quite a lot in Legacy, but RM doesn't have it - one of my annoyances.) Automatic Source Citation should help too. So on the whole, I think I'd rather get properly used to FH first, and maybe try AS at a later stage if I find I then have a lot of new data to enter. But thanks for the suggestion - I'm certainly not ruling it out. Arthur

To echo what Fiona has said: Mike's "need to be consistent" is for /your/ benefit, not for FH, which will happily accomodate almost anything you care to do. THe basic point is: the more you can record a particular 'style' of event (births, witnesses, census appearances, etc) in a consistent manner, the more FH will be able to help you. You can certainly mix Method 1 and 2 sourcing, but for maximum benefit you should probably use the same method for the same event type. But FH is very flexible: in the end, it's all up to you. -- Cheers, Roger
