    3. Makes interesting reading !! I had the same problem as Jayne when I upgraded to Windows 10. Had no problems using google drive for some time using 8.1, I now prevent Drive from syncing until I had exited FH, since then I had had no issues. Might try one drive as Mike suggested. It is these folders which I sync out to DropBox and the like. So the upload to the on-line servers can take as long as they like (and living on this motorhome with a slow internet connection: they certainly do take as long as they like) and there is never anything blocked. Doing this way also means that there is a copy on my hard drive in that second folder which is slightly older than the one I am using live. So when I have that OhNoWhatTheHeckHaveIDone moment I know I have until the next sync cycle to find the previous version of whatever I am doing. And that has saved me a good number of times in the past, particularly in the code that I am writing and I find that I have made a right mess out of the module I am on. 3. Hi Malc, I use SyncBackFree too & I can understand why you do it the way around you do if you have a slow internet connection. However, it's the risk of losing everything in between back-ups to DropBox that would bother me. I had a hard drive failure a couple of years ago & if I hadn't just done a back-up to an external drive when it happened (this was before I started using DropBox) I would have lost all my current files. Now, I keep my 'live' FH files in the appropriate DropBox folder on my laptop, from where they are synced as we go. I have another copy backed up using SynchBackFree, to an external hard drive, just in case. As you are virtually forced to do it 'the other way around', I would suggest you also have a local back-up copy on external media of some kind, just in case your computer fails and you can't get to DropBox for some reason. 1. Re: [FHU] Marking Ancestors
    2. Beryl & Mike Tate via
    3. Robin, if you are using FH V6 then the Focus Window does it automatically. If you set that youngest person as the File Root, then all direct ancestors are marked with a blue-arrow instead of the usual magnifying-glass icon. Change the File Root and the blue-arrows automatically move. In Diagrams it is easy to add a Box Conditional Expression using the IsAncestorOf() function that sets an Icon or Text Colour or other feature of Ancestor boxes. This has recently been discussed (again) in the FHUG Forum, and can similarly automatically adjust according to the File Root, or the Diagram Root, etc. http://www.fhug.org.uk/forum/ Regards, Mike Tate -----Original Message----- Subject: [FHU] Marking Ancestors I would like to be able to select the youngest person in a family group and then ask Family Historian to mark all his or her ancestors. This makes for easy navigation forwards or backwards through the layers of ancestors. My previous program achieved this by marking the ancestor in each generation by changing his or her name from regular to bold text. Regards, Robin

    3. Robin, Not sure what version of FH you are using, but in version 6 the easiest option is to select the person you are interested in and then use the Ancestors Tab which gives 5 generations on screen. 3. Oh and there won't be any more Home Guard records any time soon. The Durham lot were meant to be a pilot but TNA dropped the idea after Durham had been done. (This was actually a couple of years ago). The reasons given were a complete shambles, on a par with Ancestry and FindMyPast's communications fiascoes. First they said that they couldn't go any further because there were people still alive (never heard of Private Pike?), then they clarified that they meant that there were more potentially alive than expected (so? Confidentiality coding for one or many, it's all the same). Finally they clarified that they felt that the confidentiality numbers were such that they didn't think it would be worth a contractor's while to digitise the lot (as was required) while holding back so many. By this time I'd lost the will to ask them if they'd asked any contractors that, or were they just making decisions on their behalf.

    3. Have you tried adding 'Home Guard' as the value of the Military Service Attribute, in the same way you do for the Occupation attribute, above the Date and Age fields? 3. What is it that bugs you about it? If I recollect, the Home Guard was divided into battalions, so I'd probably enter an attribute value of "7th Cheshire Battalion, Home Guard", say. Or whatever the unit was. You may even need to reorder the words - I wouldn't worry too much - the Army was prone to be consistently inconsistent with its titling, e.g. using regimental numbers in some documents long after the numbers had been discarded. I think that the various Home Guard battalions were affiliated to the regiments of the Regular Army but this should not be interpreted as being part of those regiments in any meaningful sense. This also applies to the post war Territorials where my brain gets scrambled if I interpret affiliation as being part of, as they move all over the place. So I'd leave the affiliated regiment out of the attribute value, personally.
