Could I have twopenn'orth of any interested parties time in the midst of all the elation at the imminent appearance of FH Version 5? Methods of updating PC's is one thing but would a seasonable question be _ "what hardware set up would be the ultimate, affordable and unaffordable, to treat [or be treated to] within the FH fraternity? Remember, before you upgrade, to look at the advice on the FHUG website http://www.fhug.org.uk/cgi-bin/index.cgi in the Knowledge Base regarding Family Historian Installation at http://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=how_to:index#installation_guide especially on how to Move Family Historian Settings from PC to PC at http://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=how_to:move_settings. Many users have discovered too late that they had not preserved sufficient data on their old PC before moving to a new PC. Victor: it will be a long wait before the retail version of Windows 8 is released. Perhaps 18 months. There will be releases of Beta code long before that, it will be your decision whether to try Beta code that will be buggy. I'd not suggest anyone did this unless they had a second PC. Meanwhile, Windows 7 in both its 32 & 64 bit versions runs FH magnificently. By comparison, XP is a poor operating system - especially for PC newcomers. Ian

Simon, On 4th November I ordered from TWR Computing a boxed copy of Family Historian V4 as a Christmas present for my daughter, who has been impressed with the program when she has seen me using my copy. If I had been aware of the new version and the offer I would have delayed ordering in order that she could have the free upgrade to version 5. Can you confirm that because of the 10th November dealine she will be unable to get the free upgrade and also tell me how much the version 5 upgrade will cost on CD on it's release. Roll on February :-) Ian -----Original Message----- From: Simon Orde Sent: Thursday, November 10, 2011 6:27 PM To: FHU Mailing List Subject: [FHU] *** News of Version 5 - and a Christmas Offer *** I am very pleased to say that we have today announced some details of version 5 of Family Historian, which is due for release in February 2012. I am very pleased to say that we have today announced some details of version 5 of Family Historian, which is due for release in February 2012. Please see www.family-historian.co.uk/whats-new-in-5. With Christmas coming up, we thought version 5 would make a great Christmas present. But how can you give it to anyone as a Christmas present when it hasn't been released yet? We had a think about that and came up with this offer as a solution: Anyone who buys a boxed copy of version 4 (full version) from one of a list of participating stockists, from today (10 Nov 2011) onwards, will be entitled to a free CD upgrade to version 5 when available. That way, you can give friends or relatives a copy of version 4 to unwrap on Christmas Day, with the upgrade to follow shortly. Or you could keep it yourself of course. Also, from 10 Nov onwards until version 5 comes out, anyone who purchases a licence for the download version of version 4 will be entitled to a free downloadable upgrade to version 5 when it is released. Again, this only applies to purchases of the full version - i.e. it does not apply to purchases of upgrades to version 4. For more details about the Christmas offer, and for the list of stockists participating in the offer, please see www.family-historian.co.uk/v5-xmas-offer. Please remember that the offer only applies if you buy it from a stockist who is participating in the offer. It will not apply if, for example, you buy a copy from Amazon as they are not participating in this offer. Incidentally, when version 5 is released, version 4 users will be able to buy an upgrade to it either on CD, or as a download, just as version 3 users can currently buy a CD upgrade, or a download upgrade, to version 4. Thank you everyone for your valuable advice, particularly Mike Tate, because simply changing the default file-opening-program to FH has miraculously cured the problem (fingers crossed). No, I don't understand it! Double check the drive letter used by both FH and FTW. Try making a change in FH and saving it, then check Date Modified on the FTW GEDCOM.ged file to prove that is the one FH is using. You can open any .ged file using a plain text editor such as Start > Programs > Accessories > Notepad and examine its contents to see what data it contains. Beware not to use Save though! When using Windows Explorer does it display hidden files and file extensions such as .doc or .ged or .txt? It is useful when tracking down files to do so. On Windows 7 open Windows Explorer and use Tools > Folder options > View tab. Then select 'Show hidden files, folders, and drives' and untick 'Hide extensions for known file types'. There are similar options on Windows Vista and XP. When you double-click the FTW GEDCOM.ged it opens in FTW rather than FH because FTW is the default program for .ged extensions. You can change that default by right-click on any .ged file and choose 'Open with' and then 'Choose default program'. If FH is listed then select it or Browse to its Programs Files executable, ensure 'Always use the selected program to open this kind of file' is ticked. As a small contribution to this, I believe FTM saves its files with the extension .ftw. Indeed, they offer a facility to "convert" gedcom files into FTW format, though I suspect that very little is done apart from changing the extension. So, Does Dennis' file show up in FH with a .ged extension or with .ftw? There may be two files with the same name but different extensions that have got out of sync. FH evidently isn’t using it. So where is my FH GEDCOM file? The FH program finds it every time, but where has it gone? Windows Explorer can’t find it. Is there any way I can get FH to tell me where it’s saving it?
