I am wondering why you are scrolling down the list. Remember you can position to any person at the top of the list just enter "surname, forename" , also if you use a name search query to can easily cut the list down to a manageable amount. You can find the name search query here: http://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=fhugdownloads:contents:name_search Once installed you can customise it to show what ever columns you want. -- Jane. 1. [FHU] Very large gedcoms
    2. marianne leonardt
    3. Hello, I would like some advice from anyone who has compiled a HUGE gedcom on FH - in excess, say, of 35 000 names. I've been collecting data for a one-name study - and the name is not a very rare one. I compiled the data in Microsoft Word files, several for each UK county, and I have been transferring them to FH. I really want them all in one gedcom in order to have a single name index. So far, I have transferred just the Devon lines, and I have just over 5000 names. It all works fine, but I'm already aware that the name index is very long and takes a while to scroll down. I'm just wondering whether, when I get to an expected 40 000 names, it will be too unwieldy to be usable. The alternative would be to create a separate gedcom for each county, but the lack of an overall index would be a big drawback. Not only that, but if I then changed my mind and decided to combine them all in a single gedcom, I would then have the problem of multiple entries in the source file for the same titles (and I've discovered that you can't merge duplicate sources without losing most of the citations). My ultimate aim is to create a website, probably using TNG. I haven't fully explored this yet, but I would hope that this would get over the problem of a massively long name index by dividing it into groups (e.g. by first letter of forename). I just wondered whether any other FH user has experience of dealing with this "problem" (of course, hopefully it is not a problem at all and I don't have to worry!). BTW, I'm still using FH3. Would there be any advantage in this case of changing to FH4/5? Marianne

    3. I'd like to second (or third) that. Many thanks to Mike and to everyone who has provided advice on this list during the year. But most of all, of course, I'd especially like to thank Jane who does so much to help FH users here and on the FHUG website. 3. I'm not much of a contributor to this list (mostly because I'm not clever enough!) but I read and absorb the content with huge interest. I feel at this time of the year, that it is time to show appreciation for all contributors to the list but particularly to Jane, Mike and a few others who always offer friendly help and advice to the rest of us. I do hope that you will have time to fit Christmas into your busy schedules, but at any rate, let me say a big "thanks" for all the help you have provided me - and everyone else, over the past year. Have a great Christmas and a successful New Year! Best regards Roger Mitchell rdm@mfo.me.uk<mailto:rdm@mfo.me.uk> http://mfo.me.uk<http://mfo.me.uk/>

    2. Jayne thank you, your suggestion worked for me. I shall look at using descendant another day. I wanted to show a fairly complete report with birth, marriage, deaths and census. Having now added the marriage date, this is what I needed Thanks again Lyn

    3. With the report displayed, go to report options, on the left click add below the Family Members items and add the marriage date from the Family As Spouse. The reason this is not shown, is Family Group sheets are normally printed one for each Family. If you want all the information you might be better using a descendants report for the Father, with one or two generations selected. 2. I have been using Family Group Sheet today and notice that although Marriage date is shown for the head of the family, dates for when there children have married are not shown only the name of the spouse which seems a little odd. Is this correct or is there some where that I have not ticked? Lyn

    3. McAfee and Norton are well known for using huge amounts of resource on a computer, I stopped using either years ago and noticed an immediate improvement in speed. These days, unless you have specialist requirements there are plenty of good and free anti-virus programs that will do the job. Both Avira and AVG offer free versions which are perfectly adequate for most people. Neither will hog your resources. 3. Steve - to easily find the last individual worked on in the last session - if you have a column in the Records window set to show you 'Updated' you can click on the column heading and it will bring the most recent record to the top of the list. Or - another way is to add that person to a named list before you exit, ready for your next session - I have one called 'Work in Progress' and then you can go straight to that person next time. Regards Julie

    3. You can always set the file root to the person you are working on, just right click on the focus window a use set as file root, which I do sometimes, or keep your current people in a list so they are always just a click or two away. 3. Am I missing something, or is it not possible to get FH v4 to remember the last record viewed on re-opening the program? - I can't see a setting / switch for this - but neither can I find a request for this on the wish list (so maybe you can do it?) - surely I can't be the only person for whom this might be useful? - If I recall corectly, it does work like this in Family Tree Maker.  It would be nice to go straight back to what one was last working on without having to remember!   Regards Steve

    3. As the project window is a standard operating system window it is easy to resize and force it to retain that size. Hold down the left shift key and at the same time use the mouse to drag the window to the size you want. At this point release the shift key and the mouse button. Now if you close the window and reopen it, it should be at the size you previously set it.
