    3. Thank you Jane and Adrian for your replies. I have decided that for now I will use a simple 'Military Service' fact and add additional single line Notes as required to cover additional information such as Regiment, Rank, Service Number, theatre of war and medals awarded. Clive Spratt

    3. Thank you for the link, from which is it obvious that the news of the delay is from a reliable source as they virtually paraphrase Simon. Unfortunately your message read as more of anger than disappointment. A simple 'Now it is February, I had been eagerly anticipating the imminent release of v.5 so I was very disappointed to read in this morning's My History newsletter of a delay' would have been sufficient. Whilst giving the link at the time would have put everyone fully in the picture. 3. I rarely comment on the list, but feel that as an IT professional I think that I should on this occasion as Pam is absolutely correct in what she says. Any delay in a software release is unwelcome to users and developers alike. However, it is absolutely the correct thing if testing is incomplete or has revealed a serious bug. Whatever the pressure, it is bad practice to issue a product that still contains known bugs. In addition, whilst a delay is unfortunate, it is preferable to possibly compromising the integrity of data. Previous releases have also been delayed by a few months and when they have been released have proved to be stable and reliable. 3. Kath, the FH website says V5 includes: [...] - support for plug-ins ... - Integrated access to a new plug-ins store [including] a new mapping tool ..." [...] So my interpretation is yes, albeit via a plug-in rather than natively. But welcome nonetheless. Presumably there could eventually be a range of different mapping/geocoding plug-ins to choose from, if folks decide to write them. See <http://www.family-historian.co.uk/features/whats-new/whats-new-in-5> http://www.family-historian.co.uk/features/whats-new/whats-new-in-5 for more. 3. <<snipped>> I have added an attribute/fact called Military Service and would like to have a sub-set for information such as; Service (RAF, Navy, Royal Marines or Army) Unit (Regiment, etc.) Awards (Medals, etc.) Where served, etc And so on, rather than a long list of Military facts as per <<snipped>> I ignored the initial download as it seemed to encode every attribute off an attestation form - like you, I felt that, for _me_, this was overkill. For what it's worth, I seem to use the following 5 custom events / attributes: Awarded (attribute) - value is list of gallantry medals awarded; Court Martial (event) Issued with (attribute) - value is list of campaign medals issued; Military Service (attribute) - value is name of unit down to as close a detail as I have, e.g. "10th Battalion, Cheshire Regiment"; Wounded (event) These attributes and events appear in multiple versions - e.g. if someone serves in 3 different battalions, I have 3 Military Service attributes. The Note attached to the Military Service attribute is then used to provide a narrative for that time interval. I discarded the idea of a separate attribute for rank as the narrative report would then describe all someone's service in a battalion, possibly up to demob, before - eventually - coming to the rank attribute and mentioning that during his service in the battalion, he was promoted. Instead, for me, it's just part of the narrative at the appropriate time (but therefore more difficult to find in a query). This seemed a reasonably small set of data. You could omit the "wounded" event and just record it in the narrative note but it is then more difficult to find using a query. I confess I don't use =getlabelledtext() - if I did, I might adjust these ideas. In any case, you need to think through carefully how you would handle multiple units, medals, etc. Adrian B

    3. Custom Facts like this are imported by FH OK, but it does not automatically create a Custom Fact definition. In order to create a Fact with a value you must create a Custom Attribute in the Work with Fact Sets tool. There you will also be able to define the Sentence Template. Meaning if I hide partner number two first his descendants disappear, and when hiding partner one his descendants remain, and vice versa. I would suggest that if you are only hiding some spouse information anyway, that you keep both of them in this particular instance. If you are hiding spouses to keep the chart tidy why not go for one box per marriage / partnership?
