Jon, It should make no difference whether you upgrade to FH V5.0 before or after switching from Vista to Windows 7. The accumulated wisdom is that you do NOT perform an in situ upgrade from Vista to Windows 7. You should first use "Windows Easy Transfer" on Vista to create complete Backup media. Also ensure you have all the necessary CD/DVD/Media and Licence Keys to re-install all Programs you want to keep. Then perform a clean full install of Windows 7 on a reformatted disk so that no remnants of Vista remain. Re-install all the other Program Software such as FH and Microsoft Office, etc. Finally use "Windows Easy Transfer" to restore all Accounts, Document files, settings, etc. P.S. If you buy a new PC then you can use "Windows Easy Transfer" to transfer from old PC to new PC via your Broadband Router instead of using backup media. I have successfully use this last method myself. Julie, You might also like to try the "Map Life Facts" Plugin that is a development of "Map Life Events" but with more features and options. Thank you both for making those clever behaviours clear - I certainly hadn't noticed them before (maybe I sleep through FH sessions). Delighted to withdraw my File menu request, as what FH now gives me is far better! Paul

I have just installed version 5 and was wondering why when it was copying across the multimedia files it has made multiple copies of quite a lot of them - but not all. On my old sub-directory I had 2416 census images and on the new sub-directory it has created 3603 new files. In some cases there are as many as 1 original plus 7 copies of the same file. On probate record copies it has only copied 164 files across from the 166 files on the original sub-directory. Each other sub-directory has similar problems. It is in any case somewhat frustrating that it copies the files across to a new sub-directory rather than just using the original files in the original sub-directory. Now I don't know what it has copied and what it has not without going through files one by one to check. Any ideas ? Regards, Dick Thomas

The statement about the ged opening as such is no longer true, from V4.1.3 if you open a gedcom file which is part of a project it will be opened as such. Thanks, Mike, for the idea. In fact the easiest route in for me would be right-clicking the FH taskbar icon which does show all the recent GEDS. I use this all the time to open a new instance of FH. Actually I'd noticed that route, but of course FH then opens the GED as a GED, so Project-dependent features are then absent (e.g. web publishing). And I'm a bit uncomfortable wondering what else about the project won't be updated. In the end I still feel the recent project facility could usefully be added, in the File menu and (now I think about it) on the FH icon. Paul

Stuart, There is a "Backup and Restore Family Historian Settings" Plugin currently being Beta Tested. This offers the ability to Backup and Restore all FH Program Data Custom Files, Standard Files, and Registry based Preferences. Also it offers an option to Migrate all FH 5.0 Beta settings to the new FH V5.0. It should be available from the FH Plugin Store within the next week. Alternatively, you can try the Beta Test - see the Plugin Discussion thread Backup/Restore FH Customisations at http://www.fhug.org.uk/cgi-bin/index.cgi?action=forum&board=luaplugins&op=display&num=6004 Regards, Mike Tate -----Original Message----- From: family-historian-users-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:family-historian-users-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Stuart Baker Sent: 28 March 2012 09:07 To: family-historian-users@rootsweb.com Subject: [FHU] Family Historian Version 5 Beta Having had Version 4 previously if I upgrade to version 5 what happens to my settings in Beta? Sorry - you are right. We should have mentioned the recent free upgrade offer in the FHU announcement . In fact if you look on the front page of the website at www.family-historian.co.uk, it is mentioned there (added yesterday). We also mentioned it in the email newsletter 'Bulletin' that we sent out about the release. The website says: "If you bought version 4 under an offer which entitled you to a free upgrade to version 5 when released, please don't do anything now. You will be contacted either by email or by your stockist, depending on whether you bought a download or boxed version. Your patience is appreciated." Hopefully not too long now for the download upgrade emails. I can't speak for the resellers sending out free CD upgrades, but hopefully it won't be too long with them too.
