    1. [FHU] UIDs found using UDF plugin
    2. Ed Thomas
    3. I'm a little confused about what UIDs and UDFs are - can someone help me out please? I've run the UDF plugin and all the results show the same type of UDF item. A typical entry in the UDF Item column (of the search results) takes the form "648F771CC6A395439DE827DF0BEBF3B3EE10". This means absolutely nothing to me! Is it safe to delete these entries or are they needed? The plugin found about 450 instances of these entries (out of a database of about 1,350 individuals). Thanks Ed

Sorry forgot to say, in V5 you can also double click on most fields in a query result set to jump directly to the field in the property box. -- Jane. 3. These are UDF fields which were there in V4, they probably came when you imported some other data. If you download and install the UDF plugin it will list them all and you can select the cell and delete the ones you don't need and correct the ones you do. http://www.family-historian.co.uk/pluginstore/plugin-entry?id=55 On 29 March 2012 14:21, Victor Markham <victor@markham.me.uk> wrote: > Looks as if I will have to go over these one by one to put them all back in -- Jane. 3. My DVD came this morning and it was very quick to upgrade from v4 to v5. It did generate a very large exception file listed as 'uncategorised data' as 'non gedcom' under a lot of record types. Like Record Type=Individual. Gedcom Id=I1. Record Number=1 one row states l.145 - INFO ONLY: Loaded uncategorised data (non-GEDCOM): "2 DATE SEP 1946" Looks as if I will have to go over these one by one to put them all back in Victor On 28/03/2012 7:01 PM, Ian Constable wrote: > I have just upgraded 4 to 5 and apart from a few UDFs, no problems. 3. Joan, Save some money and buy the 'FH Upgrade V4 to V5'. New with FH V5 you no longer need to re-install every FH Version from V2 > V3 > V4 > V5 to get up-to-date. The 'FH Upgrade V4 to V5' can be installed with just the 'V3 to V4 Licence Registration Key' and the 'V4 to V5 Licence Registration Key'. See http://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=how_to:reinstall_family_historian for full details. If you simply install any FH Version over any existing installed FH Version it should retain all your custom settings. When you lost your custom settings were you migrating from one PC to another at the same time? In any case, there are ways of preserving Diagram and other Custom settings that are immune to installation upgrades. See http://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=how_to:move_settings for full details. Reply to this if anything is still unclear. 3. If you have been customising the default diagrams and standard schemes it's a good idea to clone the schemes and save the defaults as custom diagrams (it's a good idea to do this anyway, just in case you need to rebuild your machine at any point). 1. [FHU] Upgrading to V5
    2. Thanks to Jane and Simon I have now realised that I shouldn't have tried to be too clever when installing V5. I must have told it to create a new project (although I hadn't realised I had) instead of just installing and directing it to the original GEDCOM. Anyway all appears to be working fine now. 1. Re: [FHU] Family Historian Version 5 Beta
    2. Beryl & Mike Tate
    3. John, The short answer is "Yes" but with some caveats. Firstly, both PC must be running an identical Version of FH, but the 32-bit versus 64-bit difference is not a problem. Transferring all the C: drive Program Data files in the Calico Pie folder will work OK, despite the XP and Win 7 folder paths being different. The one exception is any Diagram Box Icon files not located in the Program Data ~ Calico Pie ... Icons folder due to different path names. Transferring most of the Windows Registry preference settings will also work OK with some gotchas. You will have to reset the Tools > Preferences > "Default Startup File" and "Default Backup Folder" every time, again due to Path names. I suspect there are a few others like this related to file path name differences. Related to these concepts, do you synchronise your two PC using Dropbox (or something similar) to automate the process? For anyone else following this discussion, these caveats don't apply between Win 7 and Vista providing both PC keep all files in the same place in identically named accounts. When the Plugin reaches the Plugin Store there will be Help & Advice pages to explain the above in more detail. If so, would it work transferring between XP (32-bit) and Win 7 (64-bit)? Thanks John

    1. Re: [FHU] Scripting
    2. Beryl & Mike Tate
    3. Paul, Yes, but only if you supply the GEDCOM full path name to the Plugin. The Plugin script would then be able read the GEDCOM, but only as a plain text file. None of the Record structure FH API would work. 3. Just to clarify (and add to what Jane has said): installing version 5 (or upgrading to version 5) doesn't do anything to your project data or multimedia files. If you are upgrading from version 3 or earlier, we recommend that after you upgrade you create a new project and import your existing data file (a Gedcom file) into it. You can choose whether you want FH to copy multimedia files into the new project folder or not. If you need more guidance, click on the link "Tips for new and upgrading users" on the first window you see (the Project Window). If you are upgrading from version 4, there's no need to change your data at all. Just install version 5 and then continue working exactly as you did before. I suspect you will find the additional images are not linked to your gedcom file which is why they were not copied across. If you have more than 1 copy of the same file, this is because you have linked the same file to a media record multiple times. I recommend using the merge compare option on your original file to merge the records prior to creating a project, you can open a gedcom file using the More Task button and gedcom tasks. -- Jane. Record Number=1. l.88052 - INFO ONLY: Loaded uncategorised data (non-GEDCOM): "2 ADDR 13 Lyme Grove" l.88053 - INFO ONLY: Loaded uncategorised data (non-GEDCOM): "3 CONT Marple l.88054 - INFO ONLY: Loaded uncategorised data (non-GEDCOM): "3 CONT Stockport, Cheshire, SK6 7NW" l.88055 - INFO ONLY: Loaded uncategorised data (non-GEDCOM): "2 PHON 0161 427 2216" l.88056 - INFO ONLY: Loaded uncategorised data (non-GEDCOM): "2 NOTE Web:" l.88057 - INFO ONLY: Loaded uncategorised data (non-GEDCOM): "2 NOTE E-mail:bush.lyme@@ntlworld.com" --------------------------------------------------------- The numeric portion of Gedcom Ids have been retained as Record Ids. Use these to match entries to records. This information all relates to me, but I do not recall ever entering it (although the error in the e-mail address suggests otherwise), nor can I find it anywhere, except right at the end of the file in PSPad where, incidentally, line 88051 is my name. When I close the report I get further dialogue boxes about validation that result in a "no errors found" message. So, where is this data? How do I delete it? How do I stop the Report and the Validation dialogue boxes appearing? P.S. The exception lines are easier to read if this posting is viewed in full screen. George
