    1. [FHU] Place names in columns
    2. Paddy Buckley
    3. I am trying to get some consistency in the Place names that I have recorded at intervals over several years. In Tools>Work with Data> Places, I have sorted them into 3 columns, corresponding to Township, County, State (in USA). When there are 3 elements in each place name, I can sort into columns by the use of commas. But if the place name has only 2 elements, the first being the County, the only way I know of locating the County in the middle column is to put a comma before the place name. This leaves "blank" in the first column. But then the comma is retained in the Focus window and in the Records Window. Does anyone know of a better way of sorting into columns? In addition is there an easy way of converting abbreviations for State (USA) or County (UK) or Chapman Codes into full names? Paddy Buckley

    3. Bob, I am running FH V5 on Windows 7 (64-bit) and Vista (32-bit) but cannot reproduce your symptoms. If you use the Family Historian Sample Project does it make any difference? BTW, have you considered using Ancestral Sources V3 to enter Census data (and Baptisms and Marriages) into FH? It makes the task so much easier. See FHUG at http://www.fhug.org.uk/cgi-bin/index.cgi for details. Everything I've tried to do so far has worked fine except that if I try to copy a fact from one person to another (something I usually do when entering census entries), then although I appear to be able to use the "copy fact" button (the one next to the "add fact" button), I cannot paste the fact to another person as the "paste fact" button (next one along) remains greyed out. 3. Sorry Graham, I misunderstood. I don't believe there is any way to preset these settings to your preferences. I am also certain that it cannot be done with a Plugin. Notepad++ or a Batch script of some form could do it. If you are planning to do a lot of this kind of automated FH operations then I suggest you look at AutoHotkey. At first sight it appears to be just a way of setting up shortcut keys to perform simple keyboard sequences, but it is MUCH, MUCH more. I have used it to do exactly what you are wanting to do, and program a sequence of window button and list selection options in FH. I have also used it to build a complete application with user interface windows. Namely my "Property Box Tabs Organiser" free download from the FHUG site. 3. Graham, I forgot to mention you could also do the translation using the free text editor Notepad++ (just Google to find a download). Simply open your GEDCOM in Notepad++ and use the options to save as UTF8 without BOM with a different filename. Google for details if necessary. A couple of lines near the HEAD of the GEDCOM file will also need editing. Strictly speaking the 1 FILE line should specify the new file path and name. The line 1 CHAR ASCII Should become two lines: 2 _VAR DSR 1 CHAR UTF-8 ANSI and UTF8 share the same characters for the range 0-127 - effectively all the latin letters and numerals, plus the common punctuation. If your GEDCOM doesn't have anything outside of this, then ANSI and UTF8 without BOM will be identical. 1. Re: [FHU] Record Id
    2. Beryl & Mike Tate
    3. Paddy, FH support a variety of Record Types - Individual, Family, Note, Source, Repository, Submitter, Submission, Multimedia, and Header. Each type has its own separate series of Record Id that start at 1 and increases as each Record is added. To see all the Record Window tabs use Tools > Record Window Options in V3/V4, or Tools > Preferences > Records Window in V5, and set them all to Always Show. For any linked Record, select it and use View > Record Links to see the linked Records. It is also possible to write Queries to produce a set of results listing such Record links and associated data. Any Record can be deleted by selecting the Record and clicking the Delete key - there is warning message to give you an opportunity to Cancel. All the above applies equally to V5 and V4 and V3. 3. Paddy, Just expand slightly on Derek's reply, these Notes are records in their own right, as opposed to the 'Local Notes' which are stored against fields within an Individual/Family/whatever record. As such, they can be linked to multiple records, storing common information only once. So, for example, I use them to store detailed information about less common or archaic names for diseases/causes of death (e.g. symptoms of 'Acromegaly' or 'Phthisis'), or details of events that affected more than one individual (e.g. the Forest Lane School Fire). In the Records Window Notes tab, under Links, you'll see how many records the Note is linked to. If it's zero, it's not linked to any other record in your database. HTH John

    1. Re: [FHU] Version 5 Key;
    2. Beryl & Mike Tate
    3. Laraine, I thought we had resolved this issue for you. You do NOT need the V4 key to install the V5 Upgrade over an existing V4 installation. You only need the V5 key supplied in an E-mail with the download link. If your V4 key does not turn up after your search, and you cannot retrieve it from the original supplier, and you need to re-install V5, then you will have to buy the Full V5. Whether you buy a download, or a CD, the following advice is relevant to everyone following this thread. 1) Keep a separate electronic copy of the "Installation File" and the "Licence Name" and the "Registration Key". If necessary copy all the installation files on the CD to hard disk (especially the Setup.exe file). Copy type the "Licence Name" and the "Registration Key" into a text file and save that along with the installation files. If the details are in an E-Mail then save/export the E-mail as a Text file along with the installation files. 2) Make sure these electronic copies are included in your regular file backup regime. 3) When entering the "Licence Name" and the "Registration Key" use Copy (Ctrl-C) and Paste (Ctrl-V) from the details saved above into the FH License window. You have paid good money for the FH product, so don't be careless with it. 1. Re: [FHU] Entering Marriage Details
    2. Beryl & Mike Tate
    3. Marion, When entering most Facts to the Individual Property Box, they are "Individual Facts", that are indicated by a BLUE bullet on their left, and stored in an "Individual Record". By the way, Facts with a GREY bullet are derived from the Birth Facts of Children of the Individual. Engagement, Marriage, and Divorce related Facts are "Family Facts" and indicated by a RED bullet. Although entered on the Individual Property Box they are actually stored once in a "Family Record" for the couple. This explains why changing the details via the Groom also affects the Bride - there is only one Fact, but it does allow TWO Ages to be saved. The Marriage Event Address should be that of the Marriage e.g. Church or Registry Office. The Date should be the Date of the Marriage To save the pre-Marriage Residence Address use a Residence Attribute for each Individual. Here the Date should perhaps be "Before <date of marriage>". To add a Multimedia image to a Fact, select the Fact and click the Camera Icon below the list of Facts and Add the media there. For a Marriage Event this will add the image to the one "Family Record Event" and thus be associated with both Bride & Groom. To see these "Family Records" and their "Family Facts" use View > Record Lists >Families. A "Families" tab can be added to the Records Window by using Tools > Record Window Options > Families > Always Show. At the risk of confusing you further, there is another way of recording Marriage (and other Source) details in support of Facts. It involves creating a "Source Record" to hold the Marriage details, perhaps a transcript of the Certificate or Parish Registry, and images of the Certificate or wedding photos. This "Source Record" is then attached to each Fact by using the "Add Citation" button on the yellow Sources Pane below/beside the Property Box. Thus considering the Facts above, this Marriage "Source Record" would be cited by the Marriage Event, and both Residence Attributes. Also if you enter an estimated Birth Event based on the Bride & Groom ages then these Birth Events would also cite the same Marriage "Source Record". This is where Ancestral Source comes into its own, because by simply entering the details from the Marriage Certificate once and perhaps attaching an image of the Certificate, then all of the above and more is created for you automatically. For example it also can create Individual Records for the Father's of the Bride & Groom and create an Occupation Attribute for each Individual. Regards, Mike Tate -----Original Message----- From: family-historian-users-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:family-historian-users-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Marion Woolgar Sent: 31 March 2012 07:40 To: family-historian-users@rootsweb.com Subject: [FHU] Entering Marriage Details I have a problem entering marriage details into FH v 4.1.2 - my copy of FH v5 upgrade is on order and is hopefully on its way. With the Property Box open and the Groom's record at the top, I enter the marriage date and place and also a Source Citation. I then click on the Facts Tab and enter the age and address of the Groom plus any notes. I then click on the Multimedia Tab and add any images relating to that marriage e.g. certificate, wedding photos etc. I then switch to the Bride and enter her age and address plus any notes. So far, so good. I thought that was job done and I have entered literally thousands of marriages from my One-Name Study that way over the past two years as I transfer my data from a manual system to FH. However, I now discover that I have three problems: 1 When I enter the address information for the Bride, it also changes the address information for the Groom to show her address as his. Now I'll grant you that, for early marriages, both Groom and Bride do very often come from the same parish; but there are instances nevertheless where their 'addresses' are different. However, the problem becomes much more difficult with the post-1837 marriages where more take place in towns and the street addresses of the Groom and Bride are almost always different. 2 The same thing happens in the Notes field. The notes that I enter for the Groom also appear on the Bride's record. When I change the Bride's record to show her correct notes (and they are sometimes different), they overwrite the text that I have previously entered on the Groom's record. The really odd thing is that when I enter different ages for the Groom and Bride, they ARE accurately held by the program, it is only the Address and Notes fields that are affected. I simply cannot see where I have gone wrong, or how to correct the problem. 3 When entering the media image(s), I thought that I was attaching them to the event (as that was where my cursor was immediately before clicking on the multimedia tab), it now seems that I was attaching them to the person i.e. only to the Groom, because the image hasn't also been attached to the Bride's records. Can anyone enlighten me as to what has gone wrong with entering the marriage data; and how to correct the problems, please? 2. Hello Mike, Thank you for your response and all your help with this - its much appreciated. I've decided to go with Christenings for the time being. Changing all Baptisms into Christenings would certainly appear to be best course in your case, since it will allow the FAMC Parent Family links on any Christening Event. If you change all Christenings into Baptisms, then the following effects will apply. 1) Each Christening without a FAMC link will convert to a Baptism without any side effects. 2a) Each Christening with a FAMC link will convert to a Baptism with no FAMC link. 2b) The "Warning %INDI.BAPM.FAMC% ~ Invalid Tag" is raised for each such Event. 2c) A Source Note saying "%INDI.BAPM.FAMC% ~ Invalid Tag" is added to each such Baptism Event (at present the Family is not identified, but I could change that). 2d) On the assumption that this Event FAMC link probably identifies the same Family as the Individual Record FAMC link, then no significant information is lost. I am close to 100% certain that there would be no other side effects. But you should of course review your data carefully and keep appropriate backups in case something comes to light later. Incidentally, I tried the "Christening-Baptism Conversion" Plugin and it performed the action 2a) above, but WITHOUT any of the 2b) or 2c) warnings. Thank you for your patience - I hope this and other Plugins will enhance your Family Historian experience. But if I go ahead with changing christenings into baptisms, what are the implications of losing the FAMC Parent Family links? Will this cause any other problems? regards Julie Julie, I have found the cause of the "Warning %INDI.BAPM.FAMC% ~ Invalid Tag" messages. It is an anomaly with the GEDCOM 5.5 specification. Whereas BIRTh, and CHRistening, and ADOPted Events are allowed FAMC Parent Family links, NO OTHER Events or Attributes are allowed such family links. Therefore, when a CHRistening with a FAMC link is changed to a BAPtisM the FAMC Tag is Invalid. Nothing I can do about that. So if you want these Events all to be the same you will have to change all BAPtisM Events into CHRistening Events, or lose the FAMC Parent Family links. I cannot explain why your "file goes down from 20,910 individuals to just 483". 3. During my working life I used major commercial database programmes that used a numerical '0' with a dot in the centre. This was an excellent solution and prevented any chance of misreading. -----Original Message----- From: family-historian-users-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:family-historian-users-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Mike Longbottom Sent: 30 March 2012 22:34 To: FAMILY-HISTORIAN-USERS@rootsweb.com Subject: [FHU] Version 5 Key; As an aide; The Key entry box is configured to accept all key entries and inserts them as Upper case. The letter "O" is a nice fat figure whilst the "0" is slimmer; (almost oval) although I appreciate that's not easily distinguished on a PC or Laptop screen. It may be helpful at a later date to use the numerical "0" as a strike through zero for the members who find differentiation difficult. Love the new version.
