    1. [FHU] Import from Family Tree Maker 2012
    2. Tony Timmins
    3. I would like to import a FTM2012 file into FH. However I don't want another copy of all the media in the Project file. Can anyone advise how how to import and leave all the media tags in place? Thanks, Tony (New User!)

    1. [FHU] Multimedia - How to avoid medias to be presented as portraits
    2. Pedro
    3. I have started including all my media pictures to Family historian. Some pictures show people and are nice to have them being presented as portraits in the software as well as in the family trees. However, other medias I add are just pictures of places, maps, etc. and I do want them to be shown as people portraits. If I got it right, it seems like FH automatically uses any added media as portraits. My doubt. How to avoid this? Is there any practical way? Pedro

    3. Trevor, FH never deletes such empty Facts because that was requested by a number of users. In the case of a Death Event, the implication is that it is known that an Individual died but not where or when, etc. Eventually you will find that the GEDCOM becomes "1 DEAT Y" which means Death confirmed Yes, but with no other details, so do not purge this tag. Yes, if you really need to remove the Fact it must be deleted via the All tab or the Records Window. How to prevent/remove? This may have nothing to do with the original question, but if I give a person a date of death, then delete the date of death, the All tab in the Property Box still has a blank field "Died" which in turn is displayed in diagrams. Looking at the GEDCOM there is a "1 DEAT" for that person. I can delete the "Died" field in the All tab which in turn deletes the "1 DEAT" from the GEDCOM. I am therefore wondering if Family Historian should automatically remove the blank "Died" field when the death date is deleted? Trevor Rix

    3. Lorna, Sorry, that is typo on my part, an underscore is missing, so it should be: =IsTrue(%FACT._SENT% = "") I've even confused myself about items subordinate to a Fact. =IsTrue(%FACT.SOUR2% = "") is a special Citation structure called a Source Note that is allowed independently of Source Record links. =IsTrue(%FACT.OBJE% = "") is a link to a Multimedia Record directly from the Fact (not the Citation). =IsTrue(%FACT.OBJE2% = "") is a Local Multimedia item attached directly to the Fact. 3. Hi Lorna, I know it is a bit convoluted, but you have the logic back to front. The last filter is saying Exclude unless =IsTrue(%FACT.SENT% = "") is true i.e. Keep the Fact in the Result Set if it has NO custom Sentence, which is the normal case. But if it has a non-standard customised Sentence (not a blank one) then we must not delete the Fact, so exclude it from Result Set. The second and third lines are needed because it possible to add Notes and Multimedia to Citations even when there is no linked Source Record. Such are the mysterious ways of GEDCOM structures. How to prevent/remove? Thanks Mike. The last filter in your list doesn't seem to work, but I don't think it is needed. I don't think it is possible to create a blank custom sentence (if you try, it reverts to the default sentence). I am also a bit confused about the second and third lines in the list below. How would it be possible to have a Note or Multimedia attached to a Source citation when you have already excluded all facts with Source citations? However, these refinements go well beyond what is needed to find most instances of 'empty' facts, so I am hapy with the query as it stands. How to prevent/remove? Mike, Your query is very useful, thanks. However I think there is one scenario it doesn't cover: In a very small number of cases I have an event with no data in subsidiary fields but there is a Source citation. Admittedly it was an oversight that no note or 'before...' date had been entered. It might be safest if the query could check for the existence of any Source citation. If someone is using the query to do a global delete of a large number of 'empty' deaths, for example, they would not want to delete a death event for which they did have a Source. 3. <<snipped>> That problem should be reported to Ancestry because they are misinterpreting the GEDCOM according to its specification. The 'Y' after the DEAT tag is nothing to do with the PLAC or ADDR subordinate tags. <<snipped>> As I recollect, it was reported to Ancestry - though I am a lot rusty on where and when it popped up. As I don't have any such records - well, I don't *think* I have any! - I can't check its current state or provide a specific instance for programmers to work with. However, since Ancestry's adherence to the GEDCOM spec'n is a case of "It fits where it touches", I suspect any fix would simply go into a large pending tray. Nor are they any different from the majority of software suppliers... Adrian

    3. Much as I hate to disagree with Jane, but FH does create that 1 DEAT Y format. It is part of the GEDCOM specification Pages 31 & 32 that requires the 'Y', if there is no DATE or PLAC field, to prevent the DEAT fact from being pruned. It simply needs a Death Event to be added without any details, or the details to be later deleted leaving just a blank Death Event. However, I know of no way of detecting the 'Y' using a Query, other than by testing that all subsidiary fields are empty. This is what the Query does referred to by Andrew Braid. 3. Dave I also use FH/TNG and have seen this in the past. My conclusion was that it had been created on export from Legacy software. For a while I was using Legacy import/export as the easiest route to creating a GEDCOM with only "basic" BMD data*, but perhaps could also be added via an imported twig from someone else? That wasn't the case with mine, as I do not add other people's GEDCOMs as such. *still do when required, but the data don't go to TNG. Sorry, can't help with removal.
