I have v5 on my old Win 7 computer backed up to: documents\My Dropbox\Family Historian Projects. I have purchased a new Win 8 computer. I have downloaded the 30 day free download trial and entered my Licence Name and cut and pasted my Registration Key. It tells me that my name and Reg key are not valid. I have emailed Calico Pie at [email protected] with my name and key and await their response. Hopefully they will sort the problem out. Assuming that Calico Pie resolve the problem and I am able to register FH on my new computer the next challenge will be to connect up to my FH dropbox folder on my new computer. Please could you provide me with a step by step guide on how to do this. Although I am reasonably computer literate I struggled in linking FH up with Dropbox on my old computer and had to use Jane's patient help and support. I assume that this will be the way I transfer my project to my new computer. Multimedia is kept inside my project. James Pam
I have just upgraded to V.5.0.9. and have moved FH from an old laptop to a new one. I installed and tried to use the plug-in for repairing broken links for photos but do not know how to use it. I got so far and found there were 15 problems but when it asks for a destination folder, I don't know which one to use. Family Historian Project Folder? Calico Pie? Media? I have already copied the folder with the missing photos into the Media folder. Eventually I had a list of the photos with various paths but at the end of the line it says "file not found" Where have I gone wrong? I have a few more questions regarding the Project window but will keep them for another time. -- Sheena
Mike I am running FH 4.1.3, have tried a re-install and a rollback to no avail. It looks as if I will have to live with the problem and use the Flag/Colour box option, not as easy as a simple right click, but Hey Ho. Thanks for trying to help. Regards Ray G
If you join the FHUG www.fhug.org.uk then you could post screenshots of the Chart, Diagram Options, etc and someone might spot the problem. But simply a re-install over your existing FH would be worthwhile. BTW: Are you running the latest FH V5.0.9 ? Use Diagram Options > Boxes tab. Then Add Condition > Record Flag and choose Record Flag name. In the Box Features window tick Box Fill and select colour from palette. Click OK. Hi Ray, That would suggest the Chart thinks the new Parent link is unavailable for one of the following reasons: The Child already has both Parents linked, which is of course the case. The Chart is not allowed to expand in that direction, i.e. add ancestors to the root of a Descendant Chart, or add non-direct ancestors to an Ancestor Chart. Have you tried Diagram > Hide/Show Boxes > Show Hidden Boxes. Presumably if you double-click the Child box its Property Box opens and the blue triangular Up button at the top leads to the Parents? Is this to be expected? Regards Ray G

I use a flag "focus" that colours boxes green in diagrams to indicate how far I have got in reviewing the people in large trees. Alternatively I find it useful to order the records window by the column Updated with the most recently updated people at the top of the list so that I can easily refresh my memory as to who I was working on last and continue from where I left off. Trevor Rix > As to the Marked chart , it is a quick and easy way to find where I was in > the chart the last time I used it, at least it was until this problem arose. > Using Named Lists for this would be fairly cumbersome in the context.
Ray, What happens if you try to add the parents using the Chart? If you left-drag upwards from the Child box you should get a dotted box, with options to Add Father/Mother (new record) or Link Existing Record as Parent. I have the Generations set to 'all' so it is not that, in any case there are older generations in the chart. I am not sure why the chart would stop updating Unless it's simply that you have reached the number of generations you originally set for the chart), but I am not clear why anyone would use the temporary Mark feature to track people needing attention. What I would recommend is to use a named list to track the people as this will work in many contexts and you can set a named list from your currently marked boxes. Do Diagram>Marks>Select marked Boxes Then Edit>Save to Named List This will then create a list which you can either 1. Adjust your Box settings to colour boxes based on the named list entry or 2. Use set Marks using Query and use the In List Query to select the list you created above. This has the additional advantage that you can also add notes of what you want to do to the people on the list and print that out if you wish. I usually do all my research using a saved Ancestors chart, however recently whenever I input parents for a child the chart does not update and show boxes for those parents. as far as the chart is concerned the child does not have parents Within FH the child is correctly identified as the child of its new parent/parents and vice versa. The only way round it is to generate a new chart and change its name. It makes no difference whether the data is input via AS or directly in the focus window. This would normally only be a minor irritant were it not for the fact that I have many individuals "marked" on the chart for further research, unfortunately the Mark only seems to identify the box and not the individual in it, consequently I have to laboriously remark everything whenever a new parent is added. Is there a setting that I have unwittingly changed ? , Any assistance appreciated. Regards Ray G
Having set all the Citation Details and clicked Set Automatic, then the Auto-Citation is primed. I assume you ticked both the options to Automatically add citation to new... Now when you create a new Record or new Field, the Citation with its Entry Date and Assessment, will be automatically added to that new Record or Field. I am not sure what you mean by "when I use the source" because you don't use the Source, you add new Records or Fields and the Citation of the Source is automatically added to them. Any existing Citations of that Source are not altered.
