    3. Pedro, Checkout the FH "Help > Family Historian Help > Using Family Historian > Advanced Topics > Understanding Data References". At the bottom under "Advanced Indices" it defines the 'looping index' and links to "Understanding Text Templates" where it describes "5. Using Indices to Create Loops". [1+] means all instances starting at the 1st [2+] means all instances starting at the 2nd [3+] means all instances starting at the 3rd, and so on. 3. Hi Pedro, In Diagrams you can use the special [1+] index to show all instances of Facts. So Birth would use %INDI.BIRT[1+].DATE% for example. In the Diagram Options > Text tab when you Edit Text Scheme if you add from Available Items then there is an option to select All instances which utilises the [1+] index. 1. Re: [FHU] Adding Multimedia files into a Project
    2. Ian Thirlwell
    3. That's normal Windows behaviour. The program for which you are opening/selecting a file will by default choose a filetype it is most likely to want. In the same circumstances Photoshop, for example, will default to an image type (in my case it defaults to 'All formats' which all lists image files plus PDF) since you wouldn't expect it to open a text or Word document. The list you get with FH, including All files, allows you to choose a different filetype that the program is capable of handling. Only when I scroll down the 14 options to 'All files' can I open everything in the folder and choose the media file I'm looking for. 3. I understand exactly that scenario and all the observations are correct in their way. When the Insert From File option is used it opens the Browse File window. Although similar, this window is NOT Windows Explorer, because it has the File name, File type, Open, Close options at the bottom. Family Historian does control the 14 lines of File type options, and could alter the list, and has done over past versions. The reason FH puts Image Files at the top is (as Jane says) because they are preferred and supported in Diagrams & Reports. Strangely, some popular file types such as PDF are not listed at all except under All files (*.*). Unfortunately, that Browse File window cannot currently be customised by FH users. However, after clicking to display the 14 line list there is no scrolling involved, just a click of the preferred set of File types, which in Paddy's case is Document Files (.doc,.docx,...). 3. Hi Yasmin, Yes, 4.1.3 should run in Win 8.1 as mentioned in the FHUG Knowledge Base and Family Historian Product FAQ: http://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=how_to:about http://www.family-historian.co.uk/support/pre-sales-questions However, if splashing out on a new PC it would be worth spending just £23 for a "V4 to V5 Upgrade". V5.0.9 has many new features, in particular Plugins, and a simplified installation process. Do you have many customised Diagrams, Reports, Queries, Property Boxes, Fact Sets, Preferences, etc? If so, there is a Plugin designed to transfer all these from PC to PC, which can be awkward, especially if your old laptop runs Win XP. What was your starting version of FH? Was it V2 or V3 or V4 that need to be re-installed from scratch. With the "V4 to V5 Upgrade" those earlier versions do NOT need to be re-installed. 3. The trick of using FH V5 30-day free trial with your Licence Key only works if you originally bought a "Full V5" Licence. It does NOT work if you bought an "Upgrade V4 to V5" Licence. If you did buy a "Full V5" Licence then there are workarounds for the problem you describe. For full details visit http://www.fhug.org.ok and check the Knowledge Base at: http://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=how_to:reinstall_family_historian If you have lost your "Upgrade V4 to V5" download file then the above link explains what to do. The E-mail address you have used is NOT the best one for licence support problems. Can we deal with the Dropbox setup once you have FH V5 installed on Win 8. In the meantime visit http://www.fhug.org.ok and check the Knowledge Base at: http://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=fhugdownloads:contents:dropbox Regards, Mike Tate -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of James Pam Sent: 13 June 2014 21:42 To: family-historian - Forum Subject: [FHU] Transferring FH to a new Computer I have v5 on my old Win 7 computer backed up to: documents\My Dropbox\Family Historian Projects. 3. Since you have FH V4.1.3 you might like to try the FH V5 free trial to see if that fixes that problem. You need to backup all your current Project data and the customisations C:\ProgramData\Calico Pie\ folder. It would also be advisable to create a System Restore point or backup the Window Registry. Install the FH V5 30-day free trial and experiment with the problem Chart Diagram. If V5 fixes the problem then you may want to invest in its purchase. To return to FH V4.1.3 you need to restore all your backups and roll-back to the System Restore point. You may also need to re-install FH V4 from scratch which requires going back your first fully licensed non-upgrade version (V2.0 or V3.0 or V4.0). 1. Re: [FHU] Media help
    2. Beryl & Mike Tate
    3. Sheena, With FH V5 Projects it should be possible to copy them from PC to PC without breaking the Media links. The Plugin for repairing broken links is mainly for FH data prior to the introduction of V4/5 Projects or for imports from other genealogy software. >From your description, you appear to have an FH V5 Project on your old laptop with all photos in the Project Media folder. So, on your old laptop, your Project should be listed in the File > Project Window list of Family Historian Projects. If so then use Tools > Work with External File Links and check the File Links. They should all be listed within Project Data Folder - Media... known as "Relative File Links" that are portable from PC to PC. But if some or all are listed within say C: - Users - ... Documents - Family Historian Projects - ... they are "Absolute File Links" that are NOT portable. However, if these are all referring to your Project Media folder then they can easily be adjusted by two methods: (1) Manually Just select the files &/or folders immediately below the Media folder and use the Re-Map button to 'Re-map within Project Data Folder' and choose the Media folder. (2) Plugin Use the Check and Repair Media Links Plugin to convert Absolute Links to Relative Links, which requires no user dialogue to choose folders. The objective is to get ALL your media files listed within Project Data Folder - Media... without any X marks. Once this is achieved, your Project and its Media will copy from PC to PC without breaking the file links. You also need to copy all your customised Diagrams, Reports, Queries, Facts Sets, Preferences, etc, etc. There is the Backup and Restore Family Historian Settings Plugin to help with that task.
