I have taken a look at the Admin list for Rootsweb and the changes to the >From address, appear to be in response to problems with the AOL and Yahoo mail servers, which were blocking Rootsweb as Spam. There is no word on if this is a permanent change or not, but I will keep an eye on the list. In the meantime, when replying to messages on the list, you will need to ensure your replies are directed at [email protected] as you may well find that your email client will reply direct to the person posting and not to the list. -- Jane. Hi Yasmin, When you moved the images into your Project's "Media" sub-folders, did you keep the same filenames? When the Plugin asks to "Browse For Folder", choose your Project's "Media" folder, NOT a sub-folder such as "Birth Certificates". It should then automatically fix all the Multimedia file links that have matching filenames. Hi A little about myself. I live abroad, am not young and not very computer literate. I am however quite experienced at family tree research have been studying my various ancestor families for a number of years. I bought family historian about a year ago having done some research on the available options and because I liked its appearance, apparent flexibility and ability to do all sorts of things I could only dream about. However I have been a little frightened of its complexity given my level of expertise. Before purchasing FH version 5 I had used a different and much simpler software which was about eight years old. The reason I changed was that I did not like several aspects of the recent iterations of my previous software and it was not compatible Windows 7. For a long time I have used Family Fistorian just to enter data and build up my family tree. Over the years I have amassed considerable number of photographs, census returns,BMD certificates and parish records etc. and felt the time had come to put them in the tree. The only thing I had successfully added was some notes and vignettes of my ancestors I had mostly written. I have read quite a lot of the book getting the best out of family historian and also used the other help avenues available on the website. I have to say I find manuals and written explanations about computers difficult to remember and put into practice! I decided to start with photographs. I read the chapter on insertion of multimedia via the property box and went through the process in the chapter on it in the manual. I went through the process with the book open beside me and successfully inserted a picture of the wedding of one set of my grandparents. However I was very surprised to see that the photo had also appeared in the individual people in the focus window which is not what I had wanted. I had wanted to insert the head and shoulders views as described in the manual. When I right clicked on the individual photo attached to the person I I was given I think two options the first to delete and the second to unlink. I deleted the photo in the actual tree and all the images of the picture disappeared tree. I tried again and this time I think I chose the unlink option. Following this the whole of my grandfather's family (nine children) disappeared except my father. Not only that all their antecedents going back until the early 18th century also disappeared. My grandfather and I think others still appear to be present in the list of individuals in my tree, though I'm not absolutely certain that all their data has remained. I cannot find the missing large portion of my tree. I tried various manoeuvres some of which I cannot remember now and also looked at backup I was horrified to find that I had not backed up software for a long time I think this was because I have cloud storage and it gave me a false or otherwise sense of security. Also rightly or wrongly I was not quite clear what was happening with backup in family historian since it seemed to recreate a new version of the software every time I did it but I may have got this wrong. This large loss is of course recoverable by will take quite a lot of work and time to redress. I do hope that I can be helped with this problem I realise this is a basic error and quite unlike the complicated problems which often appear on this email address. I think I may have compounded the problem in my efforts to retrieve the situation Any help would be gratefully received but I am afraid it will need to be couched in very simple terms for one such as myself! I think I have seen that sometimes simpletons get short shrift on these pages. I have therefore been slightly hesitant in coming forward. Regards, Andrew.

Hence the tree is unlinked, but the data will be there you just need to repair the link. If you have not shut down the program, simply select Edit>Undo to undo the unlink. If you have shut down the program, On your Grandfather I presume the parents show as empty, if this is the case select Add Father and then select your Great Grandfather from the links. Have you watched the video on adding media? This will help you understand how to add face links rather than adding the whole image to the individuals. http://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=how_to:v4:adding_multimedia -- Jane. Victor, I doubt if the problem is OneDrive, which is the same as SkyDrive, but Microsoft was forced to change its name due to a conflict with B-Sky-B. You talk about OneDrive removing images, but that is NOT what happened, actually your GEDCOM text file became corrupted in some way. You don't have to sign up for OneDrive if you already used SkyDrive as they are the same service but with a different name. 7GB of storage is free, and it should warn if you get near the limit. If you save photos to OneDrive on your mobile you get another 3GB free. See the FHUG advice page for details: www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=fhugdownloads:contents:microsoft_skydrive Click on the OneDrive link and then Plans at the top for charges. Also doing a Google search for OneDrive offers Plans as a link. Hardly a needle in a haystack! Victor, This may have nothing to do with what happened in your case, but do you use Ancestral Sources, and if so which version? There was a bug in the older versions which was fixed in v3.2.0 (the latest version is 4.0.1). According to Nick Walker's notes on changes in v3.2.0, there used to be " a problem with Ancestral Sources, that has been there since v1.1. If the source entry type is changed while the file is loading it is possible for large numbers of sources to be lost. It shouldn't have been possible to change source type during a file load and this should now not be possible. " This is the only scenario I have heard of where Sources can be lost, but the bug was fixed some time ago. Thanks Mike I knew you would come up with something. I will look into what you have said in your reply and deal with it as best I can. That message I copied and posted was only part of the error message. The rest was a whole list of source numbers. I wonder if this happened because I backed it up on One Drive? I have also backed things up on an external drive and was going to do this a few days ago but got distracted and had to do something else. Wish I had started the back up then and left it while I dealt with the other matter (nothing to do with computer) Looks as if I will have a lot of work to do these coming weeks. Will have to do back ups more frequently than I had in the past. I have now opened a GEDCOM file and am able to back this up in a full project folder. It does show I have 'lost' about 80 names. Not to worry as these are not directly related to me so may not bother to put them back on. At least the Media folder still has all the images etc. Regards Victor On 29/06/2014 9:26 PM, Beryl & Mike Tate wrote: > Victor, I cannot explain why this has happened. > I advise you to take Backups more often to ensure against such data losses, and keep a lengthy history of such Backups. > > However, if you Restore the GEDCOM only Backup into your Project folder you will recover your Sources. > This is only advisable if all the other Record Types (Individual, Family, Notes, etc) are uptodate. > i.e. > 1) First ensure you have created a current GEDCOM only backup of your Project. > 2) Then use File > Backup/Restore > Restore Backup and select the good FH Gedcom Backup. > 3) In the Enter Restore File Name window first navigate to your Documents\Family Historian Projects\{your-project} folder. > 4) Then open the {your-project}.fh_data folder and select the {your-project}.ged Gedcom File therein and click Save. > > Note: {your-project} above represents your Project Name. > > The other option is to use File > Merge/Compare File to incorporate the GEDCOM Only Sources into your Project. > > Regards, Mike Tate > > -----Original Message----- > From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Victor Markham > Sent: 28 June 2014 21:57 > To: FHUG > Subject: [FHU] Project folder > > Hi > > I have just found my project file has had all the sources removed. Victor, I cannot explain why this has happened.
