    3. Val, To check your FH version use Help > About Family Historian. The following explains how to use the Windows 8.1 Snipping Tool to capture a screenshot: http://www.7tutorials.com/how-use-snipping-tool Signing up for FHUG and attaching screenshots is really quite straightforward. Regards, Mike Tate -----Original Message----- From: Val Wylie [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: 04 October 2014 20:33 To: Beryl & Mike Tate Subject: RE: [FHU] 4 Irritating problems! Thanks Mike for such a speedy reply; I'll work through your suggestions and I also take note of your suggestion that I post the questions on FHUG and add screenshots. That would take the help of a younger family member but I've got Team Viewer and my daughter is a website designer so we should manage to work it out. I have Windows 8.1 and FH 5.1 (I think!). Regards, Val -----Original Message----- From: Beryl & Mike Tate [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: 04 October 2014 18:40 To: Val Wylie; [email protected] Subject: RE: [FHU] 4 Irritating problems! Hi Val, sorry you are having those problems. It would really help us if you said which version of FH and which version of Windows you are using. Also it might be better if your posted your questions on the free FHUG Forums because you can add screenshots of the problem. See http://www.fhug.org.uk Despite all that I might be able to help with some of them. (1) I suspect you are talking about the Property Box and the yellow Sources Pane. I also guess the yellow Sources Pane is shown at the bottom rather than the right. You simply have not moved the draggable dotted lines that you already have used far enough up. It might help if the yellow Sources pane was on the right. Use Tools > Preferences > Property Box tab and towards bottom set Position of Source Pan: Right. (2) If I understand you correctly, you are keeping your precious Family History Projects on a memory stick. I would strongly advise against that, and keep them in the default Family Historian Projects folder in My Documents on your C drive. That will certainly get rid of the pop-ups, and avoids the problem of what happens when (not if) the memory stick breaks down You can still keep backup copies of your Projects on a memory stick by using File > Project Window > More Tasks> Copy Project. (3) I suspect you are talking about the automatic Backup request when you close FH. It sounds as if the Backup folder setting has got upset. Use Tools > Preferences > Backup and set Default Backup Folder to somewhere in your Family Historian Projects folder in My Documents. (4) That message arises if some other program your are using has changed the GEDCOM file while you are also running FH itself. Can you identify what program that might be? Or perhaps it is something performing auto-backups of your memory stick. Again if you move to using the default Family Historian Projects folder in My Documents on your C drive I suspect the problem will go away. It is always wise to use programs in their default configuration to see if that fixes problems. Regards, Mike Tate -----Original Message----- Subject: [FHU] 4 Irritating problems! Alternatively, in the Records window, right click and select columns somewhere in the list to the left is 'Relationship to Root', click on this then use the little arrow to move to the right hand column. 3. And you can sort on two columns. For example click the Dates column title, then click the Individual Records column title. If you have several people with the same name they will be sorted in date order. The same goes for any two columns which is extremely useful. I would like to see that facility to be extended to sorting on more than two columns. As an aside, I have customised my columns to ... Individual Records Dates Spouse forename Spouse surname Relationship to Root Father Mother ID Updated Birth Date Birth Place Baptism Date Baptism Place Marriage Date Marriage Place Death Date Death Place Burial Date Burial Place First name Email Trevor Rix

    3. Hi James, The following rules apply to any columnar FH Window such as the Records Window or a Query Result Set Window. The order of the Records can be sorted according to any Column. Click on the Column Title at the head of the Column and it will sort on that Column. Hold down the 'Alt' key while clicking and the reverse sort will be applied. e.g. Click on the "Record Id" column Title to sort into Record Id order. Click on the "Individual Records" column Title to sort into Name order. Click on the "Update" columnTitle while holding the 'Alt' key to sort with most recent updates first. 1. Re: [FHU] Mapping of media - files appearing in a new folder structure.
    2. Beryl & Mike Tate via
    3. David, That is all perfectly normal. What you are seeing are "Relative" links, that are one of the great advantages of Projects. The "Project Data Folder" as you say represents the root path "C:\Users\{username}\My Documents/Family Historian Projects/Banks/Banks.fh_data". This allows a Project to be moved within your PC or onto another PC without breaking the Media file links. e.g. If you move onto another PC, any part of that root path, such as the drive letter or username, might change (especially when moving from XP to a later Windows version). The "Relative" links cope with that because the "Project Data Folder" always refers to the "Banks.fh_data" project folder. If some of your other media external links start with "C:\Users\{username}\My Documents/Family Historian Projects/Banks/Banks.fh_data" then these are "Absolute" links. These will NOT migrate from PC to PC and will become broken links. I strongly advise you use "Tools > Work with External File Links" and convert them to "Relative" links. Select the "Media" folder, then click "Re-Map" and choose "Re-map within Project Data Folder", and select "Media" as the Target Folder. Regards, Mike Tate -----Original Message----- I have a folder C:/My Documents/Family Historian Projects/Banks/Banks.fh_data/Media/Census/Banks/1841/Entered/ which contains a copy of all the 1841 census sheets that I have entered on FH.
