Try 'Publish > Record Detail Reports > Record Detail - Individuals'. In its 'Report Options' on 'Main' tab tick its 'Inc. [[Private]] Notes' option. To compact the report, on 'Page Layout' tab you may want to untick 'Start records on new page' bottom right. I have had to re-install FH5 and now when I make a chart there are numbers appearing in it. I assume they are page/sheet No.s. I can’t find a way of stopping this. Could anyone help please as I don’t want them. Alan
Hi Kath, 1) If you want more control over what you export to TNG (and elsewhere) there are Plugins that can help: Convert File Links Export Gedcom to TNG Export Gedcom File 2) They might also help after using Split Tree Helper. Regards, Mike Tate -----Original Message----- Subject: [FHU] Reducing Place names For web viewing I use two versions of Export from FH5 ... 1) Normal unadulterated Gedcom for TNG (The Next Generation of Genealogy Sitebuilding) - works fine, no problems - requires login. 2) Basic BMDs only to TribalPages for easy relationship navigation - open access. For (2) the Split Tree Helper restricts BMDs okay, but I would also like to reduce the Place name to (say) the largest three categories. For close family I have included street info in Place instead of Address, in order to locate the precise address on a TNG event map. I don't want to show so much detail in TribalPages so would therefore like to change Place from (eg) "25 Somewhere Street, Rothbury, Northumberland, England" to "Rothbury, Northumberland, England". For this purpose I usually edit the Place names manually, but it can be quite time-consuming. Is there any way to simplify this exercise? Thanks for help. Kath
Done ... Tools > Work with data > Places > sort the place name table on (say) Part 3. I hadn't realised that multiple detailed places can be replaced at the same time to the required simpified place. Bingo. Kath <snip> ... so would therefore like to change Place from (eg) "25 Somewhere Street, Rothbury, Northumberland, England" to "Rothbury, Northumberland, England". For this purpose I usually edit the Place names manually, but it can be quite time-consuming. Is there any way to simplify this exercise?

I notice that my tree does not appear in the project. Neither does the latest version of my wife's tree. How do I get these? Stuart Baker
Hi Val (and Larch) Could you please follow my advice and post these problems on the FHUG at http://www.fhug.org.uk You still have not revealed your FH Version nor your PC Windows version. Without these it is often very difficult to give you precise advice. Did you follow my advice in (2) and put your Projects in the default Family Historian Projects folder in My Documents on your C drive? Do all your Projects get listed in File > Projects Window? Also at the very top of the main FH window it should say "- Family Historian Project -" and NOT "- Family Historian Gedcom -". If not, then that needs to be corrected first. I suspect this is the root cause of many of your problems. The FH internal File > Backup/Restore > Backup options can only work while FH has the Project open. For us to be able to help you it would help us if you could post the EXACT commands you use and EXACT messages produced. Regards, Mike Tate -----Original Message----- From: Val Wylie [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: 25 October 2014 23:13 To: Beryl & Mike Tate Subject: RE: [FHU] 4 Irritating problems! Hi Mike Thank you for your reply, we are still having a few issues: (3) My tech savvy elder daughter followed your instructions and changed to backing up onto the hard drive, but the program seems to keeping a temporary file whenever the program is open and this is the file that it is trying to save, but of course as the file is in use, it is coming up with the read-only message. By changing the file name, it also alters the main file name. She has tried many different ways to fix this but is unable to get rid of this. Any suggestions? (by the way, she wrote this lol!) Best wishes Val (and Larch) -----Original Message----- From: Beryl & Mike Tate [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: 04 October 2014 18:40 To: Val Wylie; [email protected] Subject: RE: [FHU] 4 Irritating problems! Hi Val, sorry you are having those problems. It would really help us if you said which version of FH and which version of Windows you are using. Also it might be better if your posted your questions on the free FHUG Forums because you can add screenshots of the problem. See http://www.fhug.org.uk Despite all that I might be able to help with some of them. (1) I suspect you are talking about the Property Box and the yellow Sources Pane. I also guess the yellow Sources Pane is shown at the bottom rather than the right. You simply have not moved the draggable dotted lines that you already have used far enough up. It might help if the yellow Sources pane was on the right. Use Tools > Preferences > Property Box tab and towards bottom set Position of Source Pan: Right. (2) If I understand you correctly, you are keeping your precious Family History Projects on a memory stick. I would strongly advise against that, and keep them in the default Family Historian Projects folder in My Documents on your C drive. That will certainly get rid of the pop-ups, and avoids the problem of what happens when (not if) the memory stick breaks down You can still keep backup copies of your Projects on a memory stick by using File > Project Window > More Tasks> Copy Project. (3) I suspect you are talking about the automatic Backup request when you close FH. It sounds as if the Backup folder setting has got upset. Use Tools > Preferences > Backup and set Default Backup Folder to somewhere in your Family Historian Projects folder in My Documents. (4) That message arises if some other program your are using has changed the GEDCOM file while you are also running FH itself. Can you identify what program that might be? Or perhaps it is something performing auto-backups of your memory stick. Again if you move to using the default Family Historian Projects folder in My Documents on your C drive I suspect the problem will go away. It is always wise to use programs in their default configuration to see if that fixes problems. Regards, Mike Tate -----Original Message----- Subject: [FHU] 4 Irritating problems! Could brighter Users than me please help an illiterate Oldie sort out 4 irritating problems (which no doubt she should be able to sort out for herself, but which have defeated her)? 1. In the Source Citation Boxes of my earliest entries - including those of my own entry - there is a kind of 'shutter' across the individual Citations which I can move, but not so as to view the Source Citation itself. Can anyone tell me how to remove this 'shutter' and how I acquired it in the first place? 2. A pop-up keeps appearing when I am using FH which says, "please insert the last disk of the Multi-Volume set and click OK to continue." I don't have a multi-volume set of disks, or even any disks at all, as I use a Memory Stick. Eventually I get rid of the pop-up, but sometimes it takes many clicks on the cross at the top right corner before it disappears. How can I get rid of it for good? 3. For several months now I have been getting this message as soon as I add or alter information to my FH database: 'Cannot save. The file "C\Users/\Val\App Data\Local\Temp\Temp2_FH Gedcom Backup....Current " is Read-only. Do you wish to save the file under another name? I duly click 'OK' and alter the Backup number shown to the next number up and then click 'OK'. I am presently at 'Current 63' (having temporarily thought I'd found a solution with the aid of a younger family member, but I soon found that I was starting the number sequence all over again). How do I get my Gedcom Backups to save normally as they used to do and what error have I made? 4. I sometimes get a message which says, "this file has been modified by another application. Do you want to reload it and lose changes made in this application?" I never know whether to reply, 'yes' or 'no' to this question! What have I done incorrectly to provoke this message? Regards, Val

It's difficult to be accurate from your explanation, but I would guess you have moved or renamed the gedcom files independently of the Project folder. You should never move work with the gedcom files directly which belong to Projects, but always copy the whole Project folder. I am not clear exactly what you now have in your Dropbox folder, but you need to review the Folder structures to work out exactly what you have move where. Take a look at: http://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=how_to:v4:understanding_projects Which shows what structure you are looking for. -- Jane. Resending from my address registered with FHUG D.J. Some help please - I went to add some data to my FH File and noticed that it said 'Gedcom ….. Records' at the top instead of the usual 'Project…..Records’ so I clicked on File/Projects window and got a an empty folder! > > I have a complete Project folder back up from a couple of weeks ago so I guess I could restore that (but don’t know how) and then substitute my current Gedcom data file for the one that is in the back up - thus - I assume - only losing and multi-media items that I have added since the backup date. Again not sure how to swop a data file within a Project. > > I have put the gedcom data file I was working on, and have saved, into the Project Folder and tried to restore the multi media links (all multimedia items showed as crossed boxes of course in the current data file). > > A list of multimedia items that I have had linked to people in the data list appears when I click on restore but they don’t link with the data file now showing in the project window. This may be because when I tried to put the data file I have “live” that I was working on into the project folder it would not accept it as my ‘Gynes Masterfile 1’ on the grounds that there was a file of that name already there - well if there is I can’t see it! Therefore the “new” data file saved as a Project has been called ‘Gynes Masterfile 14” and I’m wondering whether the media will not restore to that file because it is new and different and not what it was linked to initially. > > I have been using FH since version 2 (the launch version) but freely admit I know very little about the ways of computers and despite reading the book and attending courses I am only scratching the surface of the great wealth of facilities bells and whistles that thus super programme offers. > > Can anyone tell me where the Projects are likely to have gone? > > One final potential factor. I have not use FH since I emptied my Drop Box onto a memory stick because it was full and I’m too mean to pay for more space! I keep my FH in my drop box and left it there when I emptied everything else out. The the programme has opened and the data file opened when I clicked on my usual shortcut link in Dropbox, but obviously not the Projects. Are the two issues likely to be linked? The Drop box syncs my activities on the desktop and the netbook that travels with me - both have empty Project folders. > > Any offered solutions in simple language please! > > Many thanks in advance, > > David > > David Gynes > [email protected] > GOON No: 63 >
Hi Jack, Depends on what you mean by mobile. FH has always been available on Laptops & Netbooks & Tablets that are all portable, as long as they run full Windows. -----Original Message----- Subject: [FHU] (no subject) Is there a mobil version yet ?
