Earl: I've encountered a similar error message this week. I have posted about it on the FHUG forum see http://www.fhug.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=40&t=11798 In my case I was sending small (about 25 individuals) gedcoms by way of email attachments, which has worked just fine before. We eventually realised that this was the source of the problem since sending the gedcoms over dropbox or OneDrive worked ok. You don't say whether email was involve in your file so this may be of no help to you but I thought I would mention it just in case. Hi Jack, I guess you are looking in the Records Window on the Individuals tab. I bet the first column header says "Individual..." which indicates it is too narrow. Hover your mouse on the vertical bar between "Individual..." and "Record Id" and the cursor will change to two vertical bars with left and right arrows. Now left-click and drag to the right to widen the column and hey presto all is revealed. Thank you Mike. I did have some blank lines after the square brackets and now that I have removed them everything works fine. Hello listers I use notes for many things and some individual records have 4 or 5 notes attached. I wish to generate an individual summary report that shows only my biographical notes and have enclosed all other notes in square brackets. This has had the desired effect except that the report still shows headings for the hidden notes. Is there some way to fix this without copying the report into a word processor and manually removing the extra headings? I am using Family Historian version 5.0.11 Gillian
Unfortunately, it is the way Rootsweb is currently distributing mailings. They include both your personal E-mail address and the FHU Rootsweb address. So when users "Reply" a message gets sent to both addresses and you get them both. The only advice is to suggest that when users Reply they delete the personal E-mail address from the To... line. Hi Richard, What matters is which type of Report Item you have chosen for your Book. It might be possible to adjust its Options to improve the wording. However, FH does tend to use the word Spouse in a generic sense to mean even unmarried partners. If all else fails, you can use Save Book As > Word-Processor Document (RTF) and then use a word-processor such as MS Word to edit the wording. If you are running Windows 7 then it may have a relatively recent backup copy. Make sure you have taken a COPY of faulty GEDCOM file using Windows Explorer. The right-click on the ORIGINAL faulty GEDCOM file and select "Restore previous versions". It may take a while to list any backup/restore point versions with dates, but you can then select and restore the latest before the problem arose. FYI: PC/Disk Drive/Software can misbehave or fail at any time, so it is important to keep regular backups of anything of value. See http://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=glossary:backup_and_recovery for detailed advice. Do you not make the backups on exit? If you do you should be able to restore the gedcom from that one. It might also be worth looking in the Project Data folder are there any additional files in there? Family Historian saves and then renames files so it's just possible there is another copy of your data in the folder with a different name. Hi Mike. Thanks for giving me a little bit of hope and for taking the time to help. I am on Vista Service pack 2. Is it possible to do anything similar with that? I had already renamed the folder from Family Historian projects to error familyhistorian projects but the Gedcom file within has not been renamed. I don't know if that would effect the system being able to restore an older version or not? Earl. Earl, the first thing to do is to make multiple copies of your GEDCOM file using Windows. Don't experiment with your original, play with a copy. Do you use Ancestral Sources? If yes, you may be in luck because Ancestral Sources by default creates backups of your GEDCOM. The Ancestral Sources help says... "Backup Folder: When changes are saved to the family history GEDCOM file a backup copy is saved to the folder specified here. By default only the most recent 10 backups are retained. This number can be changed. If set to 0 then all backups are retained." For me the location of that backup folder is C:/Users/xxxxx/My Documents/Ancestral Sources/Backups. Be careful not to overwrite a good backup GEDCOM with a corrupted one because only the last ten are saved by default. If you have such a folder, make copies of the entire folder to different locations, then experiment with one of the copies. Going forwards after you have hopefully resolved this problem, I recommend that you create a free Dropbox account, store your Family Historian data within the Dropbox folder, and set Family Historian to automatically save every minute. That way every minute as you work a copy of your GEDCOM file etc. is saved on the Dropbox servers. Historical copies are by default kept for 30 days so you can revert to an older version if you encounter a problem. Trevor Rix

Hi Earl Have you tried opening the file in something like Notepad++ and reviewing it? If it looks OK, select all, copy and paste into a new file and then try and open that. Thanks Mike for your advice. I tried it and it worked perfectly - just what I wanted.
