    3. Dear Family Historian, Is it possible to enter some information in other than the basic black colour? For instance, where I have identified possible ancestors who are most likely definite relatives but have not found any corroborative evidence other than they are 'in the right place at the right time' , I would like to add their entries in say, red, as a warning that they might not be correct but most likely are. Different colours for different degrees of certainty!! My only efforts ended in changing the colour of all the entered information! Many thanks for any help which will be much appreciated. Stella Herbert.

    3. I recently had to change computers and reload FH4. The effect has been that while custom events that I had recorded for travel have been retained with the individual, they are no longer worded properly because the custom event no longer exists. Is there any way of recreating the event and linking the references to them as before or do I have to enter each one again? Martin

    3. This is probably one for the Wish List to show Citations for attached note records which are included in reports. One problem with this is Media records can have sources and notes and notes can have notes and they can all have citations, but my feeling is one level down on Note Records would be sufficient for reporting purposes. 3. Thanks Mike That's about the only way I could see of getting the citations there - I was just hoping I was missing something, as it's not a method I'm wild about - every time I link someone to that shared note, I'd have to copy the citations in the manner you suggest. Cheers Adrian <<snipped>> you link the Source Citation(s) to the Note Record in the Individual Record rather than directly to the Note Record. However, this Citation only applies to the linked Note Record and no other data in the Individual record. <<snipped>>

    3. <<snippet>> I have created a lot of custom fact sets AND I have amended the wording on nearly all the standard facts sets so that they read in sensible English when creating narrative reports. I am going to upgrade to v4, and cannot work out how to create a fact set so that I can export the whole lot and import into the new V4. <<snippet>> If you are simply upgrading from V3 to V4 on the same PC, then I believe you do not have to do anything. FH V4 will install over FH V3 and automatically inherit all standard and custom definitions. However, just to be on the safe side you should use Windows Explorer to make a copy of the following folder and all its sub-folders: On Windows 2000 & Windows XP = C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Calico Pie\... On Windows Vista & Windows 7 = C:\ProgramData\Calico Pie\... In your particular example the Fact Sets are stored in: ...\Calico Pie\Family Historian\Fact Types\Custom\***.fhf (One file per custom Fact Set) ...\Calico Pie\Family Historian\Fact Types\Standard\Standard.fhf & GroupIndex.fhdata Then after upgrading to FH V4, if any Fact Sets or other definitions are missing you can copy them back. If you need even more detailed instructions then please just ask. Are there any other settings or preferences that you may want preserved?? If you are installing FH V4 on a different PC from where FH V3 is currently installed then there are extra steps needed - just ask. Regards, Mike Tate

    1. Re: [FHU] Citations for Shared Notes
    2. Beryl & Mike Tate
    3. Adrian, You are correct about Linked/Shared Note record Citations not appearing in Reports. However you can get both Note and Citation in Reports as follows. Open the Property Box and select the Notes tab, which is where I guess you are adding the shared Note. Use the Add Note button and use Add link to Note Record... to link to your shared Note record. Select the linked Note in the Note pane above the button and use Add Citation to link to your Source record(s). In other words you link the Source Citation(s) to the Note Record in the Individual Record rather than directly to the Note Record. However, this Citation only applies to the linked Note Record and no other data in the Individual record. Thus only the Citation link(s) to the Source(s) are repeated in each Individual Record but each Note Record and each Source only exist in one place. This shared Note with a superscript reference to the Citation appears in the report after the usual life events narrative. Provided that is that the Report Options for Record Notes and Inc Shared Notes are enabled. Regards, Mike Tate

    3. <<snipped>> thought I'd throw in what I do for citations: I construct the long (full) title of the source as a bibliography-type citation using Elizabeth Shown Mills' standards -- that then shows up as the title of the source wherever I use it. (I also use a short title for ease of reference!) <<snipped>> Yes, that's one way of handling citations - forget the individual fields (possibly), concoct the citation, slap it in one field (probably mis-using it, but what the heck!) and just ensure that one field gets printed in the reports. That's something of a last resort for me, since I've got several hundred sources that would have to be recoded. And, of course(?) that doesn't actually get us to full ESM standards since those require a bibliography entry, a first reference note and a subsequent reference note - though losing the last of those would only be an inconvenience in my view. Not sure the Americans would agree! Though I think that, as you say, this doesn't help with the citation for a shared note. Adrian

    3. I have just started trying to be a bit more rigorous with showing citations in my reports. It's not exactly easy since FH's "citation" data seems to be GEDCOM and no more, and GEDCOM is very much "published book or archival manuscript" and no more. Which makes citing an online set of images of a transcript of an original (to take a theoretical instance), a bit dodgy. That aside, I've been trying to squeeze in as much citation data as I can into various places in the FH data items, then checking FH's reports to see if I can achieve a sensible output. Which leads me to this: I'm creating a shared note - actually for some 1921 coal miners' strikes - that I want accessed from one or more people. I've created the shared note, with citations to various things like encyclopaedia entries, etc. Then I link the shared note to a person and run off a narrative report for said person - and the citations for the shared note don't appear. So far as I can see. Am I missing something that will make them appear? I'm sure that if I copy the citations from the shared note to the person and apply them to the link from the person to the shared note, then they will appear. But that's (a) a pointless duplication of citations and (b) arguably wrong since the cited sources don't mention the individual at all. Can anyone tell me if I'm missing something? Thanks for any thoughts Adrian

    3. <<snipped>> I seem to have lost my "Details" tab i.e.: Main/Details/Facts/Notes etc. Could someone tell e how to find? <<snipped>> Alan - which view are you in when you say that you've lost it? In other words, what does it say in [] at the top? Does it say "[Records]" at the top? - in which case, just double clicking an individual will bring up the Individual Window (the property Box) with the tabs on it for Main / Facts / Notes / Multimedia / All (it's possible I've altered mine and it may not quite match yours). If I double click mine it floats in front of the records window - if it does on yours, and you don't like that, then you need to "dock" the floating window - there's a series of buttons on the floating window just above the labels for the tabs. There's one at the r/h end which looks like a rectangle split in 2 vertically - click the FH window somewhere then float your cursor over it and it should give you a hint reading "Dock Property Box". Click that icon and it will dock the Property Box at the right. Or... Does it say "[Focus Window]" at the top? And no Individual's box? If so, you probably clicked the close button (X) at the top right of that Individual's box when it was open. I can close it but it seems to come back quickly if I swap to the "Records" view and then return to the Focus Window. To get to the "Records" view, click the icon at the top of the left-hand bar that looks like 3 sheets of paper or click menu item View / Records Window. Then go back to where you were by clicking the magnifying glass icon (for Focus Window) or menu item View / Display in Focus Window Does this help? Adrian
