Mike Many thanks for the additional help and the reference to the Help section the birth dates are now fine. However the more I tinker the more complexities appear! I now have those people who have neither birth nor death dates (eg a distant spouse) having a hyphen showing up and nothing more perfectly logical from what the text scheme is now specifying. I have tried amending the text scheme (eg by ticking the box marked No Data and then leaving the adjacent box blank or by putting in =IfText at the start of the text) but have not been successful. I am just beginning to come to grips with the language used in these text schemes but suspect I need something more sophisticated along the lines of If X then Y If Not X then Z. I have seen the references to Bool(ean) but cant see how I should proceed. Rather than having to bother you again one way to try to tackle the problem would be to see the detailed structure of LifeDates but I dont know where this is easily available. Joan
Joan Replace the elusive hyphen '-' with =ForceText("-") which will force the hyphen '-' to appear unconditionally. The reason the '-' sometimes does not appear is the same reason that ' in ' does not appear in front of say %INDI.DEAT.PLAC% if there is no Place. See FH Help > Search tab > enter Understanding Text Templates > click List Topics button > click on Understanding Text Templates in Title list > click Display button. I can't find anywhere to set no. of children to 0. Where is Miscellaneous? As Jane says, it sounds lik you want the No-Offspring Marker. If you click the Help button in the Diagram Options dialog when viewing the General tab, it tells you exactly what the No-offspring Marker does and how to use it. Morning all, I know there was a thread recently about marking someone as not having any children (I apologise, I cant seem to find it now). I was wondering if anyone knew of a way of marking a marriage with a flag rather than a person. I am sure that I had something before, but when my PC crashed some time ago, I lost all my custom settings and had to re-create everything. I am convinced I had something that underpinned the boxes of both spouses to effectively draw a line under them. Any help gratefully received. Thanks Karen

Hello all, Has anyone found a suitable icon to mark a box for someone who never married and never had children? I'm using the 'No-Entry' sign for a flag called 'never married' at the moment :) This is when I am certain of these facts, and need it to be clear on a diagram. What I would like is a separate flag for each as obviously some people married but didn't have children - this helps me when I'm eliminating people from research. I'm not sure what I'm expecting - a gold ring with a cross through it or similar, and a baby with a line or cross through it too? I've downloaded loads of icons from the FHUG page, but haven't found anything yet. If anyone is interested I've also created other box conditions - I've set up a flag called 'Died Young' i.e. under 16, and I use a shadow around the boxes to signify this. Also I've created a flag called 'Contacts' and have set up the box condition to have a yellow line around it - that way I can easily see where my contacts are in a tree. Many thanks Julie
Jane and Mike Many thanks for the individualised text scheme and for the extra tip about the calculated/estimated bug. I have successfully inserted it. Joan
<<snippet>> I have been asked to handwrite (!) my ancestors into a ready-prepared book by my husband and so, in order to do this easily, I want to take myself as Root on my FH database and print out in one Report each of my family lines as far back as I have entered, which is in several cases is more than the 5 generations back on offer. I don't seem able to change this number of generations, whereas if I am doing a Descendant Report I can print out any number of generations and change the number easily before I do so. <<snippet>> "Reports > Narrative Reports > Ancestors/Descendants by Generation" do not seem to have any limit on generations. "Reports > Outline Reports > Ancestor/Descendant Outline" need the "Options" Main tab Generations value increased as necessary. Regards, Mike Tate
I am not sure what the problem is the method is the same, select Ancestors by Generation, and select as many generations as you want on the Report options. Alternately, select Individual summary and then use the Ancestors Query to select all your ancestors. <<snippet>> I am preparing a large family tree diagram and using the census have a number of birth dates which I have categorised as estimated (I think it better to use estimated rather than calculated as although a particular year is the more likely year it could be the following year). When I use the Birth, Marriage, Death group of Text Schemes these dates show up as, say, 1853 (est) but when I use the Names, Dates group it shows up as 1853?. I have put together my own custom scheme based on the Names, Dates group as I am trying to reduce the space the boxes require. But I cannot see how to get rid of the question mark and put in the (est) instead <<snippet>> Assuming you want the Life Dates format of DoB-DoD you could use: %INDI.BIRT.DATE:COMPACT%-%INDI.DEAT.DATE:COMPACT% But this would include the full date of birth/death and not just the year. You could use Jane's suggestion: %INDI.BIRT.DATE:YEAR% =TextIf(%INDI.BIRT.DATE:XDATETYPE%="calculated","(est)","")-%INDI.DEAT.DATE:YEAR% =TextIf(%INDI.DEAT.DATE:XDATETYPE%="calculated","(est)","") Note the change from 'Estimated' to 'calculated' to cater for a bug in FH that swaps XDATETYPE calculated & estimated around. The relationships are: Date Type :XDATETYPE (estimated) calculated (approx.) approx (calculated) estimated Regards, Mike Tate

I suspect it cannot be done having looked at the Date Format section in the Help section but if it can I would be grateful for a simple explanation as to how to do it as I am not a programmer! Joan
