The FH Sample Project has exactly the same result - it opens, works for about half a minute then abruptly closes. I tried unticking the auto-load of thumbnails but it has made no difference! Brian Sounds exactly the same. I've not changed my anti-virus software - I'm using McAfee, like you on your pc, and it always worked fine with FH until today. There is no error message (I've just timed it and it was there for 1 minute). It happens whether I'm actively doing something or if the programme is just sitting there. It also happens when I've clicked on an old (non-project) .ged file or starting the programme which loads the default .ged file (project). I'm running FH 4.1.3 and XP. Interestingly, it seems OK on my laptop which is also FH 4.1.3 and XP. Could it be an anti-virus problem ?? - I've got McAfee on my (problematic) desktop but AVG on my (OK) laptop. It does happen to a few times over the years. I just re open it and everything is fine. I don't think you need to worry about it just make sure you have set the programme up for auto save. I have set mine to save every 5 mins If yours crash when you open it try again. If it still happens try re boot if that does not sort the problem out I best leave things to the computer experts to comment Victor Sent from my BlackBerry® wireless device -----Original Message----- From: Tony Bennett <tbennett54@aol.com> Sender: family-historian-users-bounces@rootsweb.com Date: Sat, 17 Sep 2011 08:09:42 To: <FAMILY-HISTORIAN-USERS@rootsweb.com> Reply-To: family-historian-users@rootsweb.com Subject: [FHU] Program suddenly crashes For the first time today, my FH program has started crashing suddenly. Is this the first time you have tried customising any Text Schemes, Diagrams, Reports, or Queries? Or have you customised many items before and this problem has just started? The C:\ProgramData\CalicoPie\FamilyHistorian\ folder is where most Standard and Custom settings are stored. It is possible that the access rights to these folders and files may be set incorrectly of have become corrupted. >From the account in which you run FH V3 can you use Windows Explorer to Rename any file in these folders. But please take a note of any filename before you change it, so you can rename it back. In particular does C:\ProgramData\CalicoPie\FamilyHistorian\Text Schemes\Standard\~fhAF14.tmp exist and can you rename it? If you cannot rename these files then check the Properties of the files and folders. Right-click on say the Text Schemes or the Standard folder and choose Properties. Is the read-only property set? If so then clear it, and check all the other files and folders in the same way. -----Original Message----- From: family-historian-users-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:family-historian-users-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Peter Brockman Sent: 15 September 2011 09:45 To: FAMILY-HISTORIAN-USERS@rootsweb.com Subject: [FHU] Edit Text Scheme Error I have a problem with what appears to be a program error. > I had got bugged by my inability to fit a FH diagram onto the minimum > number of pages Did you mean minimum or maximum? Anyway, it sounds like you're wanting to scale diagrams. There are various ways of scaling diagrams in FH. Here are 3 alternatives: (1) Adjust the Scaling setting in the 'General' tab of Diagram Options. or (2) click on "Scale Diagrams to Fit Exact Number of Rows Per Page" (to find this click on the Diagram menu, and then "Pages Row/Columns & Boxes"). This option (unlike the other two) requires that boxes are resized so that all rows end up the same height. or (3) click on "Show Page Boundaries" (same location as in (2), and then using the RIGHT mouse button, click-and-drag on any grid intersection. This appears to rescale the grid of page boundaries, but in fact is rescaling the diagram to fit). Having changed the scale of the diagram (and don't confuse 'scale' with 'zoom' - the latter is just how big the diagram looks on-screen), you are likely to want to reposition it on the printed page. Again there are various ways you can do this. Here are two alternatives: (A) Same as (3) above but use the LEFT mouse button to click-and-drag on a grid intersection. This appears to move the grid of page boundaries, but in fact is moving the diagram relative to page boundaries. or (B) Click on "Movement Control Box" on the Diagram menu, and then click on "Tree" in the dialog appears. After doing this, click-and-drag on any box to move the entire tree relative to page boundaries. It is a good idea to enable the display of page boundaries before you do this, so you can see what you're doing. There is a toolbar button as a quick way of enabling/hiding page boundaries. To learn more, I recommend having a quick look at "Chapter 11 - Scaling & Printing Diagrams" in "Getting the Most From Family Historian 4" (accessible from the Help menu). It's very short but you don't even have to read it all. You can see from the headings on the left side (or the Contents page) exactly what it's about. You can also move parts of trees around (or have multiple trees in one diagram). See "Chapter 10 - Smart Trees and Wall Charts" for everything you need to know about that (and much more as well). A per recent previous mails I saved my diagram as a "one page" PDF. I then transferred this to my friend who says it is too small to read and print. I have some 1300 persons on this chart and he did not want to have thousands of pages. How does he enlarge it on his screen so that he can view it as I do a page at a time in a reasonable size. And does that also apply to printing ?? Thanks John

Gedview is even better on an iPad because of its larger screen size size. I have not tried to reverse an edited iPad GED file back into FH on my desktop so don't know if will be truly compatible. But then I don't view either the iPhone or the iPad as really suitable for editing files, anyway. Those of you who are Members of the Society of Genealogists may know that they are trying to organise an 'event' in London on genealogy programmes for the Mac because of the increasing popularity of the Mac. However, none of those available seem to be anywhere near the sophistication of FH, so the pressure is on for a Mac version of FH. Especially as I would have thought that being a Member of SoG would, by definition, require the depth and breadth of FH . On the other hand I run FH effortlessly on a Mac using a Windows simulation application ( Virtual Box).
