Alan, OK, after installation just ask them to check it is the latest V4.1.3 Run FH and use Help > About Family Historian. You might find it more convenient to use the FHUG website at http://www.fhug.org.uk/cgi-bin/index.cgi Just register for free under the Login section. There are a lot of free on line Articles, Knowledge Base, Downloads, and Forums, and if necessary you can attach screenshots of problems that you cannot with this E-mail route. Alan, when you say you have sent "copies of FH", I presume that you mean separately purchased licensed copies of Version 4.1.3. Otherwise you are breaking the copyright & licence terms of FH. I also assume you are using the V4 Project structure. Use the File > Project Window > More Tasks > Copy Project option to create a duplicate of your data including all Multimedia picture and document images. The use File > Split Tee Helper or File > Import/Export > Export > GEDCOM File on this duplicate to eliminate unwanted Individuals. Read through the associated advice on their respective Help buttons and use a Query to select the required Individuals to keep/remove. If using Export GEDCOM option do NOT tick "Exclude all records which are not linked to the selected Individual records" as it will exclude more than you want I think you will have to delete any Multimedia images that are not needed by hand (if you really need to). Finally copy the entire Project folder to USB and send. Alternatively, you could compress the entire Project folder into a Compressed ZIP file and send that as an E-mail attachment if it is not too big. Hope that helps. If any of my assumptions are not correct then please reply. A couple of months ago I had problems with my pc which started when BT asked me to upgrade my McAfee software. I went on to a Tech Guys web site and they advised me to disable McAfee which I did. For a couple of weeks I had no AV software whilst I tried to sort this out. In the end I contacted BT about this (which I should have done at the beginning) they said McAfee had become corrupt and advised me to uninstall and re install the updated versions. This I did and have had no problems since. My McAfee comes free with my BT Broadband package. Those who encountered problems when upgrading this could try removing it and reinstalling it in the upgraded version. I have Wind 7 (32) and the latest version of FH Victor On 18/09/2011 2:53 PM, Colin Stevens wrote: > You all appear to have answered your own question, McAfee is the problem, as > it can be with many programs. > > Hope this helps > > Colin > > On 17 September 2011 19:15, ANDREA KENT<andrea.kent@btopenworld.com> wrote: > >> Just for info - I am running FH 4.1.3 on my laptop under Windows 7 64-bit >> (with >> SP1), and McAfee Security Centre - so far (and my fingers are crossed!) >> without >> problems. >> >> Regards, >> Andrea >> >> ________________________________ >> From: Beryl& Mike Tate<post@tatewise.co.uk> >> To: family-historian-users@rootsweb.com >> Sent: Saturday, 17 September, 2011 18:51:39 >> Subject: Re: [FHU] Program suddenly crashes >> >> Could Tony and Brian please report this problem via the FHUG website forums >> where similar problems are being reported. >> >> Visit http://www.fhug.org.uk/cgi-bin/index.cgi and register free under the >> Login >> section. >> Then post your problem to "Forums> V4 Usage> FH stopped working" and >> click >> Post Reply on the right. >> >> You could also try sending a message to support@family-historian.co.uk >> >> -----Original Message----- >> From: family-historian-users-bounces@rootsweb.com >> [mailto:family-historian-users-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Brian >> Horridge >> Sent: 17 September 2011 17:35 >> To: family-historian-users@rootsweb.com >> Subject: Re: [FHU] Program suddenly crashes >> >> Tony >> >> I'm not sure what's happening but FH on my desktop PC is behaving exactly >> the same - it runs for a short time then just disappears. Apologies for teaching people to suck eggs, but... For those replacing McAfee (e.g. by AVG Free edition), please do things in a safe order: 1. Download the new anti virus software. 2. Disconnect your PC from the internet. (Pull out cable to router; turn off wireless; whatever is necessary.) 3. Uninstall McAfee. 4. Install new AV software. 5. reconnect to outside world. >From personal experience, FH4 works fine under Vista and Windows 7 with AVG Free installed. In order to answer your question it is necessary to know what data you want to send and how your recipients will examine the data. For example, you could export a subset of your data as a GEDCOM file, but this would not include photos nor other Multimedia images. Your recipients abroad would need to know how to use some Genealogy software to view the GEDCOM data. Alternatively, you could create Reports &/or Diagrams in Adobe Reader PDF which needs no special software to view them. Let us know what you have in mind. Tricia, loads of people have been reporting this on the FH User Group on its V4 Usage forum. The solution appears to be to disable or remove McAfee anti-virus software. It worked for me. Just for info - I am running FH 4.1.3 on my laptop under Windows 7 64-bit (with SP1), and McAfee Security Centre - so far (and my fingers are crossed!) without problems. There is no error message (I've just timed it and it was there for 1 minute). It happens whether I'm actively doing something or if the programme is just sitting there. It also happens when I've clicked on an old (non-project) .ged file or starting the programme which loads the default .ged file (project). I'm running FH 4.1.3 and XP. Interestingly, it seems OK on my laptop which is also FH 4.1.3 and XP. Could it be an anti-virus problem ?? - I've got McAfee on my (problematic) desktop but AVG on my (OK) laptop. Can you open it on another smaller project such as the Family Historian Sample Project by double clicking the GEDCOM .ged file. -----Original Message----- From: family-historian-users-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:family-historian-users-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Tony Bennett Sent: 17 September 2011 15:35 To: family-historian-users@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [FHU] Program suddenly crashes It's FH 4.1.3 on Windows Vista.
