Margaret, You're fortunate that they were on that side of the bars from a Family History view point as, from my experience, you're far more likely to be able to research their time with the institution compared to that of their Warders. At least three of my paternal family (Great Grandfather, Great Uncle, Grandfather) were Prison Warders, in interesting places like Dartmoor, Portland and The Scrubs. Repeated enquiries, both to the Prison Service and to the individual institutions, have come up against a high brick wall with spikes on the top, due to the service's apparent practice at the time of destroying all old staff records. I actually envy you! <<snipped>> terms of imprisonment. I would welcome suggestions about how it might be best to record this as I can't find anything in the Event/Attribute list to cover this. <<snipped>> If it was me, I'd create a new _event_ for this. Go to Tools/Work with Fact Sets and click New... You may as well call the new fact "Imprisonment", set it as Fact Type "Event", Record Type "Individual" and let "Fact Set" default to "Custom". On the next window, the Fact Definition, you can let everything default except for the sentence, which should read something like {individual} was imprisoned {date}< in {address}>< {place}>. Address will contain the name of the prison, place = the town, city or locality where the prison is. You may also find it useful to have a custom attribute "Court case" - my sentence for that reads: {individual} was charged with {value} {date}< at {address}>< {place}>. Notice the court case is an attribute - the value of this will be what they are charged with. Imprisonment, on the other hand, is an event since I can think of no useful value for it. I'd use the note for each event or attribute to contain useful extra bits. For instance, the note of the court case attribute could finish with the verdict and sentence. The arrangement of < and > is simply to get the best spacing in any sentence that misses one of the items. It is possible that one of the downloadable fact sets contains what you need - I don't know, I always create my own as they're so easy (for me!) Adrian B

Hi Yasmin, I suggest you visit the FH User Group at http://www.fhug.org.uk/cgi-bin/index.cgi which has lots of free information on this subject. See the Knowledge Base entry of Family Historian > Installation Guide at http://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=how_to:index#installation_guide. This gives details of how to install FH V2 with CD-Backed Installer and how to Move Family Historian Settings from your old PC to new PC. Hello Yasmin I have just gone through exactly the same thing, my CD was version 2.8. I emailed Calico Pie Family Historian support, they emailed me detailed instructions which explained how to get round the SETUP error and new registration keys for the upgrades from 2 to 3 and then to 4 which you will need. They were very quick and very helpful and it all went very smoothly. Hi Yasmin, It depends exactly which Version 2 you have, but you probably need to use a CD-backed installer. This can be downloaded from the official FH website. Mike, Many thanks for your response. I'll give your idea a try. Marion Woolgar
Adrian, Many thanks for your advice. At this stage, I'm not interested in documenting campaign medals, simply because they are too numerous and I think that they would clog-up the database. However, I am trying to record specific awards of gallantry medals plus civilian awards. Although the latter seem to be awarded in great numbers every year, there are only a handful awarded within my family interests and that makes them special in the context of my research. I quite take the point about the difference between an 'award' and an 'issue'. Thank you for providing specific examples of 'Facts' and I'll give some of those a try. Marion Woolgar
<<snipped>> I believe that if you experiment with the Military Medal Attribute you will find that it copes with any type of Military Medal. It is meant to cover any form of military medal. Not just the specific "Military Medal" you mention. <<snipped>> It looks like that to me, too. _However_ depending on how pedantic and / or accurate you need to be, there is something to be aware of. Military medals (lower-case "m" for both) fall into 2 broad classes - gallantry awards and campaign medals. The latter you get for being there - and if that sounds slightly dismissive, then I apologise, it's not meant to be. Just "being there" in the trenches would be unimaginable for most of us. The pedantic point is that gallantry medals are _awarded_ and campaign medals are _issued_. I therefore have 2 facts - both attributes - for medals. Attribute 1 is for "awarded" and my template sentence is {individual} was awarded the <{value}>< {date}>< {place}>. Notice this is different from the military1 downloads, which has a sentence of {individual} was awarded the <'{value}'> {label} {date} {place} where the label is set to "Military Medal" (without the quotes). By omitting the {label}, I avoid confusion over whether the label refers to the gallantry award of the Military Medal or just any military medal. The value then contains the full title of the medal. Attribute 2 is for "issued" and I simply copied the stuff for the gallantry-medal "awarded" fact, except for replacing "Awarded" with "Issued with" and having a sentence that reads: {individual} was issued with the <{value}>< {date}>< {place}>. It does occur to me that the first sentence doesn't quite work for a Mention in Dispatches. Maybe that one simply needs to be over-written manually. Adrian B PS - if you do go on to use the Military1 fact set (which I don't) it _appears_ to record peoples' regiments. Well, during the Great War, infantry and cavalry were in regiments, but the important thing for an infantryman is his battalion, because that says where he is 99% of the time. And an artilleryman is in either a battery or a brigade - forget the "Royal Regiment of Artillery" which is meaningless for that period. So in the template sentence for Regiment that reads like this in the downloaded fact set {individual's} {label} was the <'{value}'> {date} {place} then I'd alter it to {individual's} unit was the <'{value}'> {date} {place} so it permanently reads 'unit' and the value can contain things like "7th Battalion, Cheshire Regiment".
Marion, I believe that if you experiment with the Military Medal Attribute you will find that it copes with any type of Military Medal. It is meant to cover any form of military medal. Not just the specific "Military Medal" you mention. Have you thought of using the Standard Title Attribute which should allow you to specify the MBE, OBE and BEM titles. Some McAfee users got round the problem by running their computers in Safe mode, or by uninstalling McAfee. We contacted McAfee about this problem, and urged everyone who experienced the problem to do likewise. I'm very pleased to say that today we have heard back from McAfee to say that they have fixed the problem. They say: "This issue has been corrected. Please instruct your users to update their McAfee protection to the latest DAT version 6475 released today [i.e. yesterday - tuesday]". I suspect that the rollout of this new update (and probably all updates) will be staggered, to avoid everyone trying to download the same files simultaneously. So it may take a while before everyone gets the new update If you try to update manually and are told that you already have the latest version, this may just mean that the new version isn't available for you yet. It looks as though Richard North has already got it, and hopefully everyone else will soon too. There have already been several posts on the FHUG from people who say that they have manually updated McAfee and all is now well again. Incidentally, if you don't know how to manually update, you probably don't need to do it. If you wait for a while, I would expect that your McAfee antivirus product will update itself automatically eventually anyway. I'm sorry so many of you had to go through this, but thank you very much to everyone who helped to track down the source of the problem, and who complained to McAfee and BT (they bundle McAfee in one of their products). I have no doubt that the fast response by McAfee was due in large part to the number of complaints they received. These complaints may not have been limited to Family Historian users either. Nick Walker has pointed out in the FHUG that we are not the only program that has been recently affected by conflict with McAfee. Simon Thanks for that - if you do find out, could you post it on the e-mail forum. Also, and for your information, without me doing a manual McAfee update FH has now been "open" on my PC for about 30 minutes so the fix seems to have solved the problem. Brian - I'm afraid I don't know. McAfee didn't give any more details. McAfee is renowned for causing problems to all sorts of other software packages from time to time. Why people continue to use them I don't know - there are better alternatives available that do not cause such issues and still free. And no, I don't want to start another thread on this !!! Peter, Thank you for this. It has resolved the problem in the first part perfectly. I am still working on the second part.
