Forgot to add. With the census ref in One Note I highlight that and Copy it. Using this to save the census image into the folder and also to call it up in Ancestry Sources. The answer is a simple commercial one. Why would anyone pay the price of a full V4 installation disk, if they can pay the lower upgrade price and still get the full V4 disk? Keeping track of Licence Registration Keys and installation disks/software downloads for all your bought and paid for products (not just Family Historian) does need a little effort. It should be part of your normal backup regime for all your other important data. The task of installing FH V2 then V3 then V4 is not that tricky (you do not have to install the intermediate free upgrades). The task of transferring all the necessary FH data and settings from PC to PC can be far more difficult. However, the FHUG is on hand to help. The most common reason for this is you have tried to upgrade using the V4 Trial and not the special upgrade download which was listed in your License upgrade email. If this is the case you need to reinstall V3 and then use the download from the link on your license email (or your backup of the file you used the first time) to install V4. If you purchased V3 as a download, email support@family-historian.co.uk and ask them to resend your license, including your email address at the time of purchase if it's changed. If you bought a CD your license will be printed on a slip of paper which came with it. I find the standard query "contains text" very effective for locating addresses. -----Original Message----- From: ThomasFlawn <ThomasFlawn@aol.com> To: FAMILY-HISTORIAN-USERS <FAMILY-HISTORIAN-USERS@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sun, 2 Oct 2011 6:42 Subject: [FHU] Searching for an address I have just found an individual living at an address that I am sure I have encountered before but I cannot remember where. The short answer is NO User-Defined Functions are not supported by FH. It also unlikely they would ever be supported, because it would involved publishing an interface to the internal workings of FH that only computer experts would understand. In the context of the example given though, what would be feasible would be User-Defined Macros. These look like Functions, but actually involve quite straight-forward text string substitution logic. So for instance a Macro such as 'SpouseName( )' would be defined as '%INDI.~SPOU[$1]>NAME[1]%' where $1 represents the 1st parameter. Thus: SpouseName( 1 ) would become %INDI.~SPOU[1]>NAME[1]% SpouseName( 2 ) would become %INDI.~SPOU[2]>NAME[1]% SpouseName( 3 ) would become %INDI.~SPOU[3]>NAME[1]% Taking this a step further, the space separators could be incorporated, by using '%INDI.~SPOU[$1]>NAME[1]% . " " ' And with a bit more sophistication and allowing custom separators 'CombineText( $2, %INDI.~SPOU[$1]>NAME[1]%, "")' Thus: SpouseName( 2, " & " ) would become CombineText( " & ", %INDI.~SPOU[2]>NAME[1]%, "") and the final Expression would be =Text( SpouseName(1,) . SpouseName(2," & ") . SpouseName(3," & ") . SpouseName(4," & ") ) Alternatively, going the whole hog, a Macro called AllSpouseNames(" & ") could be defined as =Text(CombineText("",%INDI.~SPOU[1]>NAME[1]%,"").CombineText($1,%INDI.~SPOU[2]>NAME[1]%,"").CombineText($1,%INDI.~SPOU[3]>NAME[1]%," ").CombineText($1,%INDI.~SPOU[4]>NAME[1]%,"")) I feel a FHUG Wish List entry blossoming! Suppose you or I could write a SpouseName() function, when that fairly scary expressions might become something like: =Text(SpouseName(%INDI%) . " " . SpouseName(%INDI%,2) . " " . It would enable complex expressions to be put together from simpler building blocks, which would be sharable between queries. If you are using FH V4 and have recorded the Address in either the Place field or the Address field then open the Standard Query > All Facts. Use the Query Menu (menu with red tick in toolbar top right) and choose Save As Custom Query with a name of your choosing. On the Columns tab add Address from the Fields pane to the Columns pane as Expression: %FACT.ADDR%. Run the Query (red triangle in toolbar top right) and on the Result Set tab you can sort by Place or by Address. Click on the Place or Address column heading for ascending sort, or hold the Alt key while clicking for descending sort. If you have too many Facts to look through easily, then add a Rows tab filter. Use Condition: Add if Use Expression: selected from drop down list at right-hand end of box and choose %FACT.ADDR% Use Operator: contains Use Value: type in a unique part of the address to search for Click the Add button and then run the Query again. To do the same for Place then use %FACT.PLAC% instead of %FACT.ADDR% above. Visit the FHUG at http://www.fhug.org.uk/cgi-bin/index.cgi where there is wealth of free info, including how to create Queries like the one above. Open the file in Notepad and do a search there, when the text is found, the nearest name should be the one that is connected to it. Hi Sue Have you tried edit/find record/, enter your search address, set record type to 'All Record Types' and check 'All text fields'? Always check the All Record Types and All Text Fields, if your like me I sometimes refer to addresses in Notes and other text fields although I will always put an address in the appropriate Address field first. Otherwise you could do a search with Notepad or Word or any other one of the other text editors (some more have been mentioned here before) directly on a COPY of your GEDCOM file - note that 'COPY' is written in capitals, do not do this on your 'live' GEDCOM file. Are you distinguishing between 'Place' and 'Address'. I use Place for a City, Town, Area, Village, Hamlet etc. and Address is the full address with Post Code etc. This way I can do a quick search for a Place using standard FH reports and Queries, particularly if I am off to a record office and need to collate all my queries together before I go. I add all my 'Record Office' queries to a named list and add columns for Baptism Place, Marriage Place, Burial Place etc. This way I can take the list with me to do my searches.
