    3. Stranger and stranger - like Ian, I have also checked my flags.fha files (using Win7), and found 2 copies, one in  C:\Program Files (x86)\Family Historian with 2 flags (this I presume is the base one which comes with the software), and one in  C:\Program Data\Calico Pie\Family Historian, which has 3 - Living, Private & Speculative. But in FH, I have 6 - the others for Twin, Never Married, and Died without issue (d.s.p). So where are those held? Thanks in advance for any light shed on this!   Regards, Andrea ________________________________ From: Ian Thirlwell <fh.thirlwell@ntlworld.com> To: family-historian-users@rootsweb.com Sent: Friday, 25 November 2011, 19:20 Subject: Re: [FHU] Flags This thread has prompted me to check my system since it is a while since I created any new flags. 3. Alan, Are you talking about the Spouse of the Individual who you have chosen as the Root of your All Relatives Diagram? If so, then in the All Relatives Diagram with the Root Individual still selected, hold down the Ctrl key and select the Spouse box. While both Spouse boxes are selected, click the All Relatives Diagram option again. 3. Hi Victor Yes, I had a problem with one census sheet in the 1851, of the 20 lines there are 5 different named families and I am related to everyone on the page and the next 4 lines of the next page. The image(s) is filed under 1851/banks/...., this being the dominant family. But due to the ease of use of FH I only have to go to the Multimedia tab, find the image and there are listed all of the families on that page. If I am in the individual screen, again just hit the multimedia tab and there is the link to the image, again with all the families to view. Or double click on the media filename and I am taken to the multimedia tab on the records window, again all families listed. 2. Lorna Craig
    3. Hi Laraine, Don't panic! There are two approaches to sorting out the muddle, and which is the best to use may depend on how many images you have already linked. In either method, decide in advance exactly how you want to organise your images, and set up sub-folders within the Media folder accordingly. That will make it easy to get future images in the right place. As you say, you could start again from scratch. This might be easiest if nearly all the links seem to be wrong and there is no pattern to the problem. But it might be quicker to use the 'Re-map' facility in the Work with External File Links box. Try this if the number of links showing up with Xs is not too great, or if there are lots wrong but it is just a matter of most of them being in Folder A while FH is looking for them in Folder B. Open up the 'Work with External File Links' box and click on the 'Help' button in the bottom corner. This will guide you through what you need to do. (This is a good tip when you get stuck in FH: look for a 'Help' button!) Good luck, Lorna > Not quite sure what to do next - I do have ideas for the future, but not > sure how to sort out the existing links which are now showing up as Xs. > Thinks........could I unlink them and try again............that might be > next move. > > Laraine >

    3. Hi Just picking up on Victor's comments I have my census images filed in folders under the major names in my database i.e. banks/1841, banks/1851 etc., cottington/1841, cottington/1851 etc. This makes filing and finding them extremely easy. But I also are very careful how I name the image files. I always start with the year, followed by the surname/first name, followed by the birth date (if known) and then by something else which I may find useful i.e. "1841 Banks Albert 1803 in Seaford". This also means that if a file gets misplaced in the wrong year/name folder it sticks out like a sore thumb. In addition, if you have windows, you can ask it to do an 'all folder search' say for "* Banks Albert *" and get a list of all Albert Bank's images for all censuses. 3. I have the same problem with Notes, Victor, where for example in a lease three or four people are mentioned. I did think that perhaps I would use the source citation, but then I need a fact to go with it! Also, one of the removal orders I have mentions 10 people! I have no facts at present for any of the poor law documents, and I have no idea how to make them. I did, some years ago, correspond with Jane about a facts set for poor law but have had no time to think about it. Perhaps now that Lincolnshire Archives is closed and I am awash with spare time I could do that now. Is there someone who could make the facts set if I give the relevant information? I tend, when sending information out to others, to use individual narrative reports, knitting together the PDF files to make one long one. I haven't done it for a while now, so have forgotten where, but there is something that you can tick not to have duplicate notes for the children in an individual narrative. 3. Ann We are basically doing both the same things but I don't have the separate files in the media folder. I have these listed as sub folders under the main folder of Family Information. Whatever way you do wouldn't make much difference. Or does it? One problem I am having at the moment is that when I use the same picture (a church for example) for two or more people instead of this appearing in the narrative report once it appears, if I used it for 3 people, it appears 3 times. That is one thing I am trying to resolve and ma looking at the hand book. I bought a printed version of this. 2. Anne Cole
    3. Laraine, I am absolutely hopeless with files and things and my pictures were in a mess, so my good friend Anne Algar sorted me out. I now go through the following : Family Historian Projects (accessed from "Documents" - Windows 7) Duncalf FH Duncalf FH.fh_data Media In the "Media" folder I have sub folders for BTs CMB, PRs CMB, Poor Law, Courts, Census etc. and just add new sub folders as I need them. Under each sub folder I have separate folders for individual sources i.e. Baps, Mars, Burials or Removal Orders, Bastardy Examinations etc. I simply save images into the appropriate folder and link them to the person or family from there. It also makes it easy for me to find an individual picture if I want to do something else with it. I am getting on for 7000 images now that the Cheshire PRs have come online :-) I still have a few images with the X through them, linked before I was sorted out, but now that I understand how the thing works I can easily remedy this. Also, I have discovered that if you make any change to the name of the image that you are linking to, it will become unlinked, so it is a good idea to work out what you want to call the images before you start. I use "Bur Prestbury 1794 PR" for both the image name and the source citation, and if I have events for different people in the image I use (1) and (2) in the source citation, using the same image for both. I don't care if this is the wrong way to do it - it works for me. Hope this helps. 3. Laraine Jane suggests creating a folder in Windows (assuming you have Windows) This is what I have done. One thing you must bear in mind that you need to locate the media. It is fine if you only have a few but as things develop with many more items added to the media you will find it hard to locate them. For this reason I have created a large number of files. These files are headed by surname (for family names), Certificates (with sub files for birth, marriage and deaths, church photos, cemetery headstones the list goes on. When you are adding a media to FH just copy from the appropriate folder. Having the folders set up like I have done makes it easier to locate what you are looking for. If the folder is in the media folder eg it shows as /media/foldername Then probably the simplest way is to use Windows to create the folder inside the media folder and copy the missing pictures into the folder, alternately make a better named folder in the media folder and copy the missing pictures in and then use the remap tool to select the new folder to replace the deleted one. -- Jane.
