Yasmin, Further to my earlier reply, I wondered if you were aware of the FHUG at http://www.fhug.org.uk/cgi-bin/index.cgi Among other things it offers the free Ancestral Sources add-on for FH. Many users find this offers a more convenient way of capturing Sources for various Facts. Currently it supports Census and Baptism events, but Birth, Marriage, Death and Probate are on the cards. It allows the Sources to either create new Facts or update existing Facts. I would like to reassure you that it is quite usual for Individuals to be added to your data on flimsy evidence. The challenge is then to research the Sources to confirm the Facts. Some users create a To Do List for their research, and the FHUG offers some advice on creating such a list. See the Create Work In Progress or Research To Do Lists at http://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=how_to:create_work_in_progress_or_research_to_do_lists Regards, Mike Tate -----Original Message----- From: family-historian-users-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:family-historian-users-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Yasmin Sent: 15 January 2012 12:02 To: family-historian-users@rootsweb.com Subject: [FHU] Advice re lack of source material Morning All I have a dilemma, when I started researching my family history I was a bit silly and got carried away finding family etc but didn't think about recording sources. Hi Mike, Yes thank you, I had only just noticed that some of my photos have [""] after the record name and some didn't and wondered why, even though they were all linked. Julie
Julie, The Link/Note entries with Record names identify the Records that link to the Multimedia Record. You should get the same list by selecting the Multimedia Record and using View > Record Links. These Link/Note entries store the Link to Face frame coordinates, and the radio button settings I mentioned before. If the Use Note as Caption is chosen it does NOT refer to the Picture Note in the Edit Media Item popup window. Instead it refers to the quoted string after the Link/Note field's linked Record name. Hope that helps. I can’t remember deleting that many records to be left with these empty link notes though! In the past, I’ve performed a re-organisation of my media folders, but have used the ‘Work with external file links’ to correct these. There are no X boxes in there now. I’ve just tried your Query and entered 10 lines for now to try it out and deleted the “” links, but I also have links which show as e.g. John Smith (“”) or as in 1891 Census Leicester (“”) What do these signify please? Yes - after a little experimentation the following scenario applies. Link any Multimedia to another Record and open the Edit Media Item window. Use the Link to Face option, or tick any radio button Exclude from Diagrams, Exclude from Reports, or Use Note as caption. Sometime later, Delete this other Record without unlinking the Multimedia. This leaves behind Link/Note entries not linked to anything. To delete these en masse requires a Query so that you can select multiple Link/Note fields and delete them. You need to create a Query Type of Multimedia and add Columns for each Link/Note %OBJE.NOTE2[1]% %OBJE.NOTE2[2]% %OBJE.NOTE2[3]% etc up to say %OBJE.NOTE2[20]% The Rows Filters need to be Add if =FieldText(%OBJE%,'OBJE.NOTE2[1]') matches '""' Add if =FieldText(%OBJE%,'OBJE.NOTE2[2]') matches '""' Add if =FieldText(%OBJE%,'OBJE.NOTE2[3]') matches '""' etc up to say Add if =FieldText(%OBJE%,'OBJE.NOTE2[20]') matches '""' [The value field is entered as two double quotes to represent the empty string and becomes enclosed in a pair of single quotes in the Rows Filter] In the Result Set click on a Link/Note column header to bring all empty "" fields to the top so they can be selected and deleted. Repeat this for each Result Set column. Julie - Was this addressed to me? I'm RoD (yes, D). My rule reads "Apply this rule after the message arrives through the XXX (insert name of account) account and with [FHU] in the subject and on this machine only move it to the FHUG folder". I would advise NOT to delete these Link/Notes. On closer inspection you should find they relate to each Source (or other Record) that links to the Multimedia Record. Try holding Alt key and double-click on the Multimedia Record to fully expand it, and you should see each Link/Note is different. While it is selected use View > Record Links and all the Records that link to this Multimedia should be listed. The Link/Notes list should be the same or a subset of this Record Links list.
