    1. Re: [FHU] Poor Law Documents as sources
    2. Anne Cole
    3. Thanks, Adrian You should look at the Cheshire QS records as there is very likely some documentation there. Unfortunately I've only indexed the documents from the Cheshire QS up to 1746. All poor law cases from 1699 up to 1730 have been published on microfiche by the FHS of Cheshire, but from 1731 to 1746 they are available at http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/chs/CheshirePoorLaw.pdf for free. Removal orders are of course usually found in the Quarter Sessions as they have been the subject of appeals. Most are annotated with the result of the appeal. I should add that all the Lincolnshire Poor Law material, including the three sets of QS papers is available in some form or other. Much of the Lincolnshire Workhouse material is also published and work continues. A2A has Lancashire and Cornwall poor law cases from the QS. My main reason for wanting a citation is a certain Joseph Duncalf who was maintained for about 50 years by a parish with which he seems to have no connection whatsoever, apart from having somehow gained a settlement there, and I have 14 typed up pages of entries from an Overseers Account Book just of entries for himself and two more generations of his family, plus several other documents for members of his family. I am assuming this is a "political" choice as FH will always hide families when you hide the spouse, as it's not accurate otherwise. If you need to do this probably the best way is to add a 3rd family to the woman add add the children to that family and you can then hide the other spouses. Alternately just add a second tree to the diagram and overlap it with just the Woman and her children shown. -- Jane. Jane Taubman | www.rjt.org.uk | www.taubman.org.uk |www.fhug.org.uk

    3. <<snipped>> Even with a removal order there can be no assumption that a) the person was actually removed and b) that there wasn't an appeal against the removal cancelling the original order. <<snipped>> Sound advice Anne - my favourite case is a widow Pickstock and children in Lancashire who were removed from Wigan to Middlewich, Cheshire, in May 1764. In this instance the document is annotated to say that the family were "delivered" there. However, in October 1764, the same thing happens again, but with no confirmation of delivery. What happened, I think, is that the father (from Middlewich) had died, Wigan therefore feared the family would become chargeable, so sent them "back". I suspect the family, apart from the father, had never seen Cheshire before, hence their return - apparently after both removals, as the widow married again in Wigan in 1765. I've seen other chains of removal orders and appeals with no clue on one document about what comes next - here you're reliant on looking through or the indexing - excellent in Lancashire's case - to find what happens next. In these cases I ended up with a Removal (custom) event, with the note against the event containing whatever caveats are necessary. But in general, I've had other instances outside the Poor Law, where I've done quite a tight custom event for starters and then, as further variations come in, wished I hadn't been quite so precise, so your recommendations for thinking it through beforehand are very sensible. 3. Pamela, This is where Source Records come into their own. Link the Multimedia file to its own dedicated Source Record, and give the Source Record a meaningful name. The name you use may be similar to the Media filename, or can be more descriptive. The Media filename now becomes less important because the Source Record will hold the details. In the Source Record you can add as much description of the Media file as you like. This may include full details of the Address and Place of a photo, what or who is in the photo, when it was taken, why it was taken, etc, etc. The Source Record can then be linked to every relevant Fact, such as Residence, or Marriage if it is a wedding photo, etc. The same technique applies to all other Multimedia, and there is much advice on this topic in the FHUG http://www.fhug.org.uk/cgi-bin/index.cgi Knowledge Base. Also the free Ancestral Sources supports the above technique for Census and Baptism, and shortly Marriage events (Birth, Death, Burial, Probate coming later). 1. [FHU] Poor Law Documents as sources
    2. Anne Cole
    3. I've been having fun today with my sources list - thanks to the email sent in answer to Andrew by Peter Evans yesterday. Today I have found out several things I didn't know I could do in FH, and in a much quicker way than I have tried to do them before. This has led me to think again about Poor Law records and sources. As there is no absolute certainty about the pauper's residence, except perhaps in settlement examinations and bastardy recognizances, or about his settlement except in settlement certificates (and that assuming that the pauper hasn't gained a new settlement and moved on leaving the original certificate behind), and as bastardy records concern a usually unknown child (although the sex of the child is often named), and places of birth are rarely given in any documents except settlement examinations, I am simply going to create a source citation that "name" appeared in a Poor Law document, with the date. The type of document will go into the "Type" box in sources, and the text in the box provided for that. Even with a removal order there can be no assumption that a) the person was actually removed and b) that there wasn't an appeal against the removal cancelling the original order. Workhouse records are easier, particularly the death and birth registers, and I already have some of these under "death" and "birth". 2. Hi Pamela Instead of simply house I would add place name, county, country after house. I would put House ( or residence) followed by place details etc. Like this assuming it was in Lincoln Residence Lincoln, lincolnshire England Pamela Price 2012. That way anyone else living in the same place will have their residences grouped together. I have done the same for all BMD certificates as well as baptisms Hope this gives some thoughts Victor Sent from my BlackBerry® wireless device -----Original Message----- From: pamela price <pamprice24@btinternet.com> Sender: family-historian-users-bounces@rootsweb.com Date: Tue, 31 Jan 2012 18:41:10 To: FAMILY-HISTORIAN-USERS@rootsweb.com<FAMILY-HISTORIAN-USERS@rootsweb.com> Reply-To: pamela price <pamprice24@btinternet.com>, family-historian-users@rootsweb.com Subject: [FHU] Media Can anyone please share how they save their photos.   If I take a photo of someone house to insert as a place of residence, when I upload this photo onto my computer I save it in the Media file, Dads Folder, Houses 31 Queens Road.. So I want to go through and delete/amend all that the information that they gave me. I have given their information a particular source which I can see in mu list of sources (with 132 citations !!). How can I get a list of those citations connected to that source so i can make the necessary corrections? Thanks Andrew

    3. It sounds as if the children are linked to two Family Records. The desired parent's Family Record, and a residual Family Record from the deleted son. In the Property Box of one of the Children, click on the blue triangular Up to parents button at the top. Does this offer the two Families as I have suggested above? If so then open the Families Record Window and locate and delete the rogue Family, which will probably have no Husband nor Wife, just links to the Children. 3. I discovered this morning that I had for years had the same person shown as a father and son and have corrected this by unlinking the son's two wives with their children and re-linking them to the father, with all relevant facts etc., then deleting the son. I now have an up and down arrow, with either both parents showing, or neither depending upon which arrow I clock on, to the left of the parent's names when I click on the magnifying glass next to the children's names. 3. Many thanks, problem solved. Yes, I did mean icons in Diagram not Flags. Still don't know why they disappeared, but your instructions have enabled me to get them back. Although I have been following these emails for several years, this is the first time that I have asked for help and am most impressed by the fast response. 3. Do you really mean the Flags are missing from Individual Records, or that the Icons are missing from Diagrams? I suspect the latter. Check the Diagram Options and select the Boxes tab. There should be a Condition named Record Flag for each Census with each Edit Condition referring to a Census Flag. Then in Edit Features below, each one should refer to an Icon. If there is not enough detail above then reply. 3. CutePDF Writer is free, it's a small download (0.30MB), and it's simple (otherwise I wouldn't be writing this). It works with Reports in v3 as well, and is the only way I've found of emailing them in their on-screen form (I used to have to print, then scan, in order to retain the screen layout). Martin.
