Thanks Mike for your guidance, I now need someone who has merged two products to help me understand how you deal with media in the process. Is it simply a case of an option to transfer the media or does it have to be done as a separate process in another way afterwards? Thanks Stewart -----Original Message----- From: Beryl & Mike Tate Sent: Tuesday, March 06, 2012 10:44 PM To: family-historian-users@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [FHU] Merging Two Projects Stewart, Your understanding is reasonably correct. Strictly speaking you don't have to create a copy of both Projects, just the one you are merging into (referred to as the Current file in FH). The Project you are merging from (referred to as the New file in FH) should only ever be read from and not changed. I think the Merge only affects the GEDCOM file, so I suspect the media images will need a separate process. (Others will correct me if I am wrong). Using Tools Work with External File Links will identify those media that need to be copied. Paddy You have to select the project to be copied before you click 'more tasks'- that way the 'copy project' will work. Gary Have a look on FHUG website as I think you may need to use a download and then enter your registration key. Are you having to upgrade from an earlier version? I am sure I had to download when I upgraded to Windows 7. Hilary
Is this the "Error While Unpacking" problem, if so make sure you have SP2 installed for Vista. You can download SP2 from http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/dd262148 Another possible problem is your AntiVirus, occasionally various antivirus programs seem to take objection to FH, so if you try excluding the Family Historian exe (fh.exe) from the run time antivirus checking this sometimes fixes the problem. Mike, I am producing a Narrative report, descendants by generation. I had changed the options, but went back to installation settings to see if that would cure the problem: it hasn't. I have only added the custom ID, record notes and marriage notes. The report begins with the great grandfather of the 4 children I mentioned. I have it set to 10 generations at the moment. Version 4.1.3 I have added the will, and am now using the facts to add the beneficiaries, linking them all to said will. I have just added someone as a beneficiary to a different will and exactly the same thing has happened. The name in bold now comes after the "Beneficiary of...." statement. The ones I did earlier tonight are correct, with the name in bold coming first. I have definitely changed something without knowing it, but I don't know what. Neither can I work out whether I have changed something in the property box or the report window. Add if you look on the property box, when you have new fact selected, what shows in the Fact Sentence field? It's possible the sentence template for the custom fact is incorrect so the sentence is going in the wrong order. That's what I would check first. it might help us to spot the problem if you post the Sentence template you have and the paragraph of text which is showing incorrectly. -- Jane. I am not quite sure which particular FH features you are referring to. By 'Narrative Record/Report' do you mean 'Individual Narrative Report' (or 'Ancestors/Descendants by Generation')? Does your Report have Installation Settings, or have you changed any Options? Are you producing the Report for one Individual at a time or are you selecting all 4? Which version of FH? I guess 'Adding a "beneficiary" source and citation to a family' means you are adding a Custom Fact 'Beneficiary' to each Individual in turn and each one has a Citation for the same Source Record.? I am afraid with those assumptions I cannot reproduce your symptoms. -----Original Message----- From: family-historian-users-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:family-historian-users-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Anne Cole Sent: 05 March 2012 19:43 To: family-historian-users@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [FHU] Help with Narrative Record Oh dear. Oh dear. I now have one of the blokes with "beneficiary of" before his name. I really must have pressed a key that has changed something. Changing the order of the facts doesn't help. It is the name that is in the wrong place. Anne > > Hello > > Adding a "beneficiary" source and citation to a family, whilst compiling a > report which I have open and rebuild after every change. Hello Adding a "beneficiary" source and citation to a family, whilst compiling a report which I have open and rebuild after every change. I have 3 chaps and 1 girl. The chaps are OK, but when I put the same into Alice's facts, the beneficiary bit always comes before her name in the report. I've taken it out of the facts and put it back in again 3 times now, but I cannot get her name to appear first in the report. I've also closed the report down twice and opened it again, but this makes no difference. I can't see any difference between what I have done with the boys to what I have done with her. Is it possible that I have accidentally hit a key that has given Alice's information a new instruction? Hello Mike Thanks for your continuing encouragement. I need to try loading a "complete" source and see how I can extract the people and facts into their respective families and other relationships via FH. Transcripts are only text, and computers as I am sure you know, can hold a lot of text in relatively little space compared to images, audio, and video. There are many FH users with many thousands of Individual Records and Source Records and Multimedia Records. My own small FH data has over 500 Individuals, 650 Sources, and 1,000 Multimedia. <<snippet>> ...nothing in my business life offers the computing challenges of FH. I look at the structure of some of those queries and think what is that all about? <<snippet>> I accept that a weakness of FH is its user interface, and Query language, but it is improving. However, it must be recognised that the genealogy software market is tiny compared to most of the other software you mention. So Calico Pie (Simon Orde) can only devote the effort to FH development that the market can stand. Also, for various reasons, FH is tied closely to the GEDCOM structure, which influences much of the structure of FH. I have found that understanding GEDCOM helps with understanding FH. <<snippet>> ...there are times when I read responses and think a degree in computer science would be a great help unravelling that one! I sense I am not alone? <<snippet>> FH is its own worst enemy here. By offering such a highly customisable product it inevitably involves much technical detail. If you are prepared to tolerate what FH offers out of the box, which is a lot, then much of that technical detail is irrelevant. It's a bit like Windows and Microsoft Office that both have unplumbed depths, that most of us steer clear of, until we need to break through a particular brick-wall. Regards, Mike Tate
