I would like to add a column in the Individual Records window to shown which BMD certificates I have. I know how to create a new column, but need some help composing the data reference. I just need it to display any combination of B M and D in the records window, but I don't want it to show up on the Reports. Jackie Follett
Thank you Mike, your answer has put my mind at rest, I do keep backups externally. John says: <snippet> I have created a master Project, is it advisable to keep the original Gedcom and all the attached media files, to me it seems pointless with a duplicate set of files which do not update when entering new information, any advice on this would be appreciated. <snippet> You only need to keep the original Gedcom and media files until you have created backups of your master Project. The File > Backup/Restore command in FH V5 offers three options: 1) Small (Gedcom only) 2) Medium (Gedcom & Data folder including Media files) 3) Full (Gedcom & Data & Public folders) However, if kept on the same disk drive, these only protect against accidental corruption of your Project data. This may result from human error, or software errors in FH or Plugins, or other programs such as Ancestral Sources. They may NOT protect against PC or Disk failure, theft, fire, flood, power surges, lightening, etc. So all your data, not just FH Projects, should be backed up regularly to some external storage. I have created a master Project, is it advisable to keep the original Gedcom and all the attached media files, to me it seems pointless with a duplicate set of files which do not update when entering new information, any advice on this would be appreciated. John
Jack asked <snippet> My uncle died at Gallipoli in 1915. I've discovered some great videos of that battle on U tube. How can I copy some of them to his multimedia file? <snippet> The first thing to do is to ensure you obtain copyright from the owner to use the video. A Google search for "YouTube downloader" offers lots of solutions to getting the download into various video file formats on your PC. Hi, I am hoping my file is not corrupted, but just a "linking" problem. I am using FH 5 on a laptop with Windows 7. I have the program set to "autosave" every 5 mins. When I highlight my project name in the project window and click on the "open project" button I get the following error: File not terminated correctly (no trailer record found.) The file does appear to open but in the records window, when I click on the "sources" tab it is completely blank. When I click on the "multimedia" tab and the "families" tab they are also blank. The "Individuals" tab does show all my individuals, however, none of the individuals are linked to any other i.e. no-one has a spouse or children - all links within the file and also to the media folder have disappeared. All my image files are still in the "media" folder within the project file. I tried the "work with external links" but it just says "no file linked." Is there any hope of resurrecting my project? Hi, I realise this is the wrong place - but I am stuck I have been to the FHUG website today, the first time since the 31 August, and I cannot get in. I have tried the “Forgot Password Link” and even that rejects my attempts. I cannot find a mail address for the administrator to have this resolved, so I appear to be stuck Can anyone advise me on the way out of this situation. Nev.Ramsden

Has anyone experienced this before and if so, what do I do to reload this tmp file and recover the data. I do have a back up, but it is about 5 days old, so recovery will save me some re-entry of data. Pandr This email and any attachments is intended for the named recipient only. This sometimes happens when an Anti-Virus program or backup program grabs the file while FH is still working on it. There are some improvements in V5 to do several retries before failing, -- Jane. Thank you all for your help. It's now all entered correctly with the appropriate notes attached. Sorry to have created a debating point. However I think moral judgments would not apply in this case as the child of this "unfortunate" relationship was born in 1635. Maybe I should have mentioned that fact in my initial email? Jackie
Hi Gill, Firstly you may not be aware of the Family Historian User Group (FHUG) at http://www.fhug.org.uk Membership is free and it offers lots a free resources and advice on FH. Gill said <snippet> I want to search records or create a list for a given Surname which includes spouses. I cannot see how to do this option in 'configure columns' for the records window. <snippet> In "Configure Columns" you need to use the "<Other...>" option from the bottom of the "Item" list, with: Heading: 1st Spouse or Partner Expression: %INDI.~SPOU>NAME:SURNAME% But this only gives the 1st spouse name so to include others you need: Heading: 2nd Spouse or Partner Expression: %INDI.~SPOU[2]>NAME:SURNAME% And so on... Click on any Column heading to sort into alphabetical order. Alternatively, you could use a Query, and the FHUG offers at http://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=fhugdownloads:queriesindi Regards, Mike Tate
Hi, I'm new to Family historian having come from Generations 8 and finding it hard going for what seems like a simple task. I want to search records or create a list for a given Surname which includes spouses , I could do this in Generations by creating a search under 'married name'. I cannot see how to do this option in 'configure columns' for the records window. Please help Sent from Gill's iPad
